CC: Which other power five programs will be looking for a coach?
October 8th, 2014 at 11:07 PM ^
Too bad we don't play them this year but I guess it doesn't really matter at this point.
October 8th, 2014 at 11:18 PM ^
Too bad we don't get embarrassed by them this year?
October 8th, 2014 at 11:08 PM ^
That's about all I can think of.
October 8th, 2014 at 11:09 PM ^
Iowa State, Kansas, Illinois and Miami come to mind.
October 8th, 2014 at 11:10 PM ^
Al Golden if Miami lets him go.
October 8th, 2014 at 11:09 PM ^
I have a friend who knows his shit about Illinois. He lives and breathes it, he hates his life basically. He says they have a worse AD than we do and are far more focused on academics than athletics now a days. He thinks Beckman will get another year.

They are focused on basketball.
October 9th, 2014 at 8:25 AM ^
Yea, I thought John Groce was an awesome hire. But I am biased because of what he did at OU.
October 9th, 2014 at 10:10 AM ^
Groce is 15-21 in the Big10 in his two years with players like Rayvonte Rice, Brandon Paul, and Tracy Abrams. This upcoming season could be a make or break year for him if he doesn't step it up.
October 8th, 2014 at 11:10 PM ^
Seems pretty obvious that Miss St will have a void, I'm in the camp that hopes we're no longer looking when his position comes available.
October 8th, 2014 at 11:12 PM ^
Some possibilities if the wheels continue to fall off:
-Virginia
-Cal
-Miami
-North Carolina
October 8th, 2014 at 11:46 PM ^
Cal is 4-1, and Virginia is 4-2.

Both coaches were on the hot seat coming into the season, and have yet to hit the teeth of their schedule and could lose most of their remaining games. Rich Rod started 5-0 the year he was fired
October 9th, 2014 at 12:17 AM ^
Sonny Dykes has been at Cal for a year and 6 weeks. Virginia will make a bowl game.

Sonny Dykes isn't going anywhere. That program was a huge mess and he's got a lot of rope. Not that he needs it.
Also, the Bears are in first in Pac-12 North.
October 9th, 2014 at 1:59 PM ^
It wasn't exactly a mess, but Dykes threw out Tedford's pro-style offense in favor of a passing spread. Also, they had a nightmarish rash of injuries on defense and wound up starting true freshmen and walk-ons at several key positions. They're deeper this year.
October 9th, 2014 at 1:43 PM ^
I've had a chance to watch Cal a few times this year (I live in the Bay Area). They look like a completely different team from last year, in a good way. Their one loss (Arizona) came on a Hail Mary that was caught in the back of the endzone as time expired; if not for that, they would be 5-0.
October 8th, 2014 at 11:13 PM ^
Where will Hoke end up at next season?
Ilinois? anyone? anyone?
October 8th, 2014 at 11:14 PM ^
home watching his tv
October 8th, 2014 at 11:18 PM ^
I honestly don't think he will ever coach above the DL level again. He's not cut out to be the head guy when schools are trending towards hiring innovate, intellectual guys. He won't be a DC anywhere because...well frankly he can't. Could you imagine that dude coordinating a defense?
October 8th, 2014 at 11:20 PM ^
I could see him as the HC of a MAC-level program again.
October 9th, 2014 at 12:39 PM ^
Wow. That would be interesting. What about Kansas?
October 8th, 2014 at 11:22 PM ^
He was doing alright at SDSU and had that one great year at Ball State. I think he's demonstrated that he's not cut out for a top-level program but I would be surprised if Hoke doesn't get another shot someplace else.
October 9th, 2014 at 12:11 AM ^
He'll be a head coach again if he chooses. Maybe not in a power-five conference, but I think he will have no problem getting a head position at a smaller D1 school
October 8th, 2014 at 11:33 PM ^
He doesn't need to work again. Made what, around 16 million. He can just retire. I don't see what he gains from coaching.
October 8th, 2014 at 11:46 PM ^
Because Hoke is well regarded as a person, it wouldn't surprise me if he is allowed to resign as a coach and is reassigned as an associate AD - similar to Bump Elliott in 1968. That will allow a smooth transition to a new coach with minimal disruption to the football program. After that, Hoke may find a new career as an AD elsewhere, again similar to Bump Elliott.
October 9th, 2014 at 4:47 AM ^
This isn't 1960!!!
- Football coaches don't just become AD's anymore
- Hoke would have NO interest in becoming an AD
- You REALLY think Brady Hoke, of ALLLL people on this planet, would be fit to run an ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT?!
I don't care if he's retiring into a b/s Associate AD role, you mentioned he may find a new career elsewhere as an AD.
I want to throw up at the notion of Brady Hoke becoming an AD, he doesn't know the first THING about athletics administration. Most football coaches don't and never did.
In 1960-1980 the notion was "if you can lead a football team, you can lead an athletics department." That's no longer true.
Also, just the position has changed SOOOOO much over the past 20 years. It's why Michigan now has a pizza man as their AD. It's a business job, not a coaching job.
Brady Hoke can't get through a press conference and you want him to be an Athletics Director, lol.
Sorry, I'm just deeply offended. As an athletics administrator, you say Brady Hoke could be and AD...even the honorary Coach Carr type AD role is disturbing. That would be like suggesting that me, Mr. Yost...the blogger, should be considered to coach the football team.
Brady Hoke hasn't earned even a fake honoray AD title, and no one does that anymore. MACK BROWN isn't even a fake honorary AD at Texas. MACK BROWN.
It's a complete waste of money. Again it's 2014, you're in SE Michigan, in this economy. It's kind of hard to pay a guy 250k/year to do nothing...just because he's a nice guy. And again, many, maybe even most of Brady Hoke's flaws as a football coach are administrative.
100% he'll coach DL somewhere, maybe even in the NFL like his brother. In fact, to get away from college for 2-3 years it would be smart to coach DL in the NFL, pro sports allows all coaches to get out of the light whether they sucked or scandal. Then he can pop back up in 2018 and coach a MAC school.

...so no.
October 9th, 2014 at 8:40 AM ^
I would rather have Brady Hoke as AD than Dave Brandon.
At least he will practice hard.
October 9th, 2014 at 10:36 AM ^
I would rather have a cardboard cutout of Brady Hoke as AD over Dave Brandon.
/s
October 9th, 2014 at 1:03 PM ^
What's that /s?
October 9th, 2014 at 9:11 AM ^
Dont schedule a meeting with this guy till the afternoon.
October 9th, 2014 at 11:21 AM ^
... Get a position in the AD after he retired?
October 10th, 2014 at 4:35 PM ^
And he's FAR more intellectual the Hoke...he also earned it way more than Hoke...he also transitioned to it in 2007/2008, not 2014. You're talking about the front end of the economy really really getting bad versus when it's already been bad for 6 years.
Things change.
October 9th, 2014 at 12:41 PM ^
Barry Alvarez would like to have a word with you.
October 10th, 2014 at 4:38 PM ^
I knew someone would use Alvarez.
You do realize that he spends most of his time fundraising and giving speeches, right?
He's also part of a bunch of committees.
What most ADs do day-to-day and what Barry does day-to-day is vastly different.
Just like JoePa was the coach at PSU before he died. But really? His assistants were doing a LOT of the work and most people knew that. I'd say Alavarez and AD is even more of a difference than JoePa and head coach.
Also, you picked one. Mike Ballotti (sp?) would've been another. But there are what, 120 D1 schools? 300-400 D1 without football?
You picked the one that has the old football coach, who is a LEGEND as the AD.
You just compared Brady Hoke at Michigan to Barry fucking Alvarez at Wisconsin.
Think about that for a second and come back to me.
October 9th, 2014 at 7:16 AM ^
Fun times. Keeping the former coach around wouldn't be part of my formula for a transition unless the new coach was his protege.
October 9th, 2014 at 1:05 AM ^
He'll be the Head Coach of an NFL practice squad.
October 9th, 2014 at 1:14 AM ^
Hoke will ride out his days as an NFL position coach. Would bet cash he ends up on John Harbaugh's staff
October 8th, 2014 at 11:14 PM ^
The only school that will likely be in the market and can compete with us in terms of resources, $$$, cache is Florida... I hope....

Is it possible that Spurrier retires after this year if South Carolina's spiral continues??
October 8th, 2014 at 11:19 PM ^
Spurrier retired when he left UF.
October 9th, 2014 at 10:36 AM ^
Spurrier is up there in years, and as we know he likes to golf. The theory was that he'd stick it out another year, just so as to not go out on a sour note. Personally, I think they should erect a statue of him regardless of the outcome of this season.
October 8th, 2014 at 11:27 PM ^
Call me crazy, but I could see LSU looking for someone new. I dont think they'll be too tolerant of 41-7 blow outs and I've never understood the hype around Les. Thats a team with tons of talent that tends to under achieve most years. Watching the Wisconsin game earlier this year was exhibit A: a totally superior team talent wise that should have lost to one-dimensional Wisconsin team. My fear is that LSU will be ready for him to leave when we come calling and they thank us for the offer...
October 8th, 2014 at 11:48 PM ^
It would be fascinating if LSU blew out Miles but in fairness they lost a ton of talent to the NFL. Not sure what happened to the defense this year but the offense is a bunch of newbs. And LSU doesnt usually have a great offense even when its full of upperclassmen.
But to your point this could be a very dark year for LSU.
Still ahead:
- a mediocre UF but on the road
- a UK team that while not good might make life uncomfortable for a half or 3 quarters
- Ole Miss
- Bama
- @ Big Bert
- @ A&M
I could see 3 losses very easily in those 6 games and potentially 4.
But for them to blow out Miles would be a case of be careful of what you wish for - both UM and TN know what happens when you blow out an entrenched coach who 'underachieves' and Miles' underachievement is far less in duration than Carr or Fulmer. He is coming off twin 10-3 seasons after 13-1 in 2011.
Now maybe LSU makes a big move for Mullen which no one is considering - who knows. Mullen is interesting to me because until 3 weeks ago he didnt have 1 signature win in 6 years. He was 4-6 11 months ago at this time. How quickly a man's fortunes can change is interesting.
October 9th, 2014 at 4:59 AM ^
Les Miles has had GREAT coordinators. He's in fertile recruiting ground. He's had hype in his program. He's charismatic. He's a great recruiter.
IMO, Les Miles is not a good coach in terms of "coaching a player up." He's a good coach in the CEO/experience sense. I wouldn't want him at Michigan with the talent we have. His antics are only cute and cool when he's winning. Brady Hoke gets yelled at for clapping. Miles claps AND eats grass.
Also, the SEC landscape is completely different than Michigan or ND. It's not 1980 anymore, I totally get that. 100%. But it's still different.
Rich Rod struggled to get some of his borderline kids into Michigan. But they all would've been fine at WVU. How many kids did have no qualify and play a down at Michigan?
Again, it's not like it used to be...but it's not the SEC either. I think Miles would adjust, no problem, but it also could deminish the level of talent he's bringing in.
Miles is also old. At this point he's just a figure head who's challenging opinions and asking questions. Miles is Spurrier. Which isn't a knock, they're legendary, but right now? With this Michigan team? They're just a fun story for the press if they came to Michigan.
IMO, Michigan needs all hands on deck when it comes to coaching. Not a figurehead who's just going to give the direction of the program and have coordinators do all the work. We're not at that level. We need the head coach to do something more than press conferences and make the big decisions of the program. We need him to be involved in the small decisions too.
October 9th, 2014 at 6:15 AM ^
How many times does this need to be said? Lloyd retired he wasn't removed. Carr made the decision before the 2007 season began. Fulmer was fired.
October 8th, 2014 at 11:51 PM ^
His buyout is like $12 million, so no, he does NOT get fired! They also hate Les until they hear someone else might hire him, then they freak out like they might lose bear Bryant.
October 9th, 2014 at 8:54 AM ^
Good friend of mine (and huge donor to LSU) keeps feeding me his insight into Miles. I don't know why, but the fanbase seems to have wore thin on him. I don't think this is the year he 'retires' (unless MIchigan makes a run at him possibly), but the fan base is probably at a point where they are just sick of him losing games he shouldn't and are ready to look at other options. I just don't see the AD feeling that way just yet. He's too good at what he does and has done to not give him time.
