CC: Which other power five programs will be looking for a coach?

Submitted by andre10 on

As we discuss all the candidates out there, it might be important to discuss who we might be competing with for those coaches. Off the top of my head I know Florida keeps getting brought up as snatching up Dan Mullen before we can; anyone else?

So I've actually watched all their games the last few years and browse their mgoblog equivalent occasionally, and you are spot on. I've been trying to tell people this lately. The only reason LSU is going to have a down year, is because they are a god dam NFL factory (Miles has put more ppeople in NFL than any other school in SEC, even Bama, look it up). Miles biggest problem the last few years is that all his underclassment go pro. They had 9 players...9!...in the 2014 NFL draft. I believe something like 6 were underclassman. Compound that over the last few years, its just not possible to reload talent that quick. He's plugging in true freshman in road games in the toughest division in college football.

Now, given all this NFL talent, is there an argument he's under acheived? Sure, but by "under achieve" people mean he's only won 1 NC and averages 10+ wins, when he really should have 2-3 NC's, and only lost 1 game a season otherwise. However, I feel that there's something to be said to being a 10 win team constantly. Think about, is there anyone else besides Saban who is consistently a NC contender? But how many teams bring in top talent, and end up floundering, or maybe having 1 good year, then back to 8 wins  - USC, ND?, looking like FSU maybe, Michigan, Florida, and I'm sure there's more.

Main point: Taking a team with NC level talent and consistently having 10 win seasons is not as  "under achieving" as you think, and is really taking a coach for granted when you consider how few coaches are above that threshold, and how many fail to reach it.

(other than at UofM and Illinois)coming open any time soon. Maybe in a very few seasons at Iowa, as Ferentz turns 60 next summer; I think he's there at least 3 more seasons and maybe as many as 6-8 seasons. At Illinois, they gotta be in a lot of doubt as to whether Beckman will ever turn it around. He just doesn't seem to be making any progress there.

We will know about Florida after the next few weeks. I am a massive Florida fan right now. Hope they win out.

Miami isnt going to nix Golden. They just recently signed him to an extension when PSU was snooping around.

WVU isnt going to pull the plug on Holgorsen either.

And Kansas isnt really a threat to us in a coaching search. Florida and maybe UNC are the only teams on this list that worry me.

Do recruits go to LSU or do they commit to Les Miles? It's always seemed to me that LSU was the draw -- for geographical purposes, program prestige, or whatever reason. Whereas Alabama's main draw is Saban.

That's what I was getting at. Whereas I think Saban could draw them to any major school, regardless of location. I think Miles + LSU at least gets him close to Bama/Saban level... Miles not at LSU isn't anywhere near as effective. Just guessing anyway.

Of all the programs in trouble this year that would be looking for a new coach at the end of the season I only see Florida as a potential problem.  But frankly, they'll probably throw money at Dan Mullen first.  I doubt they go after a Harbaugh or Les Miles, or frankly, anyone Michigan is looking to get.

I'd guess Florida's list would intersect with ours at a couple of places... if there is someone out there unhappy with their current position and looking for an out, maybe a David Shaw (with Stanford likely taking a step back and his rumored NFL ambitions in tatters) or even a Gundy, I could see both of us making a pitch. But the reality of the situation right now is that there's only one Mullen and only one of us is getting him, so I don't think it matters if they want anyone else on our list.

What would be interesting to me is if we got Mullen and Florida went after RichRod, who I doubt will be at Arizona forever and would likely kill for the chance.

It may take a couple more big losses this season, but I could see Oregon looking for a new head coach. Their current coach is seen as unimaginative, not great at player devolpment and trending downword. Oregon believes it is getting better players now with less results and may want the next hot innovator to step in. It is a long shot, but it would not surprise me.

Oregon football reminds me of one of those pop up stores you see during Halloween. It knows it could easily drop from beig a top 10 program and struggle to ever get back if it does. The Nike money will help them hire anyone they want and take care of any buyout. They are predicated on always being ahead of the curve offensively and since Helfrich isn't meeting those standards, it wouldn't surprise me if his seat is hotter than we realize.

Don't forget programs that have done so well, or well enough, that they lose someone to the NFL. Especially when it's a nearby program with at least equal, and probably greater appeal to available candidates than Michigan.

I think it's at least 50:50 scenario that ND will be looking to replace Kelly.

As noted, Illinois and Miami seem like likely places in need for changes.  I'd also throw in WVU just because Dana hasn't been THAT good there, and while they are patient he's also rubbed people the wrong way.  Also, I could see him running to another program if he has a decent season but sees the ceiling.

Florida and Michigan should be the top two HC vacancies. I'm not sure which one would be the more attractive position. Step 1 for UM is getting a new AD and then there should be a good selection of candidates.

Kansas has already fired their coach. Illinois' Beckman is a dead man walking.  Florida's Muschamp is another bad loss or two from out of a job.

Well, we know Kansas will be looking for a coach, but I'm not worried about competing with them. Illinois will be as well unless Beckman can pull off a ridiculous turnaround. Which is likely not going to happen. Not worried about competing with them, either.

Florida likely will be, but I think Muschamp bought himself a little bit of time by beating Tennessee. Not much, since you only beat them 10-9, but had he lost that game, I think his fate would absolutely be sealed. But he's got LSU, Georgia, and Mizzou in the next 3 games, so its very likely he wins none of those games. If he goes 0-3 through that, he might get let go right after the Georgia game, especially if it means losing to them 4 times in a row. And then there's FSU at the end. They're flawed, but FSU is not losing to Florida. Especially not at home. They've got the potential to be 6-6 or 7-5 this year. If that's the case, Muschamp is a goner.

I think unless we land a Harbaugh, we'll have an extremely tough time competing with Florida for a top hire. If Mullen is going anywhere, he'll go back to Florida, and let's face it, they're in a much better position to get turned around and win championships immediately. All the talent is there, and you're in one of the best states you could possibly be in for recruiting. We're just an absolute mess from the AD all the way down to the waterboy.

New to the board, so don't know where else to post this, but I've found myself wondering how important it is for a new HC to have seen the talent he is trying to recruit. IOW, an NFL coach should be able to identify NFL talent when he sees it, and a Power 5 coach should be able to identify Power 5 talent when he sees it. Does a mid major coach have that same eye? Does it matter for a HC? It obviously matters for recruiters and the HC should generally be a recruiter, but I thought about this because I've talked to others who aren't set on hiring a "name" coach (a vague term to be sure), whereas I think hiring a HC from another Power 5 Conference or NFL should be a big positive, but that it must also be paired with HC experience, and a good track record. Obviously, those are high standards and something will likely have to give, but that's what I'd be looking for in a new HC anyways. Carry on.
