CC: Trestman likely fired at end of year

The Bears aren't going to pay him the 7-8 million he'd command. They're the least of my worries as far as competition with Michigan, and I'm a Bears fan. I mean, only a week or two ago everyone figured Trestman was safe because the Bears owners are cheap and wouldn't want to let Trestman go with multiple years left on his deal, but their hand has been forced by the team pretty obviously quitting on him.

I think that is the ace in the hole for a "coach only" role in Chicago. They are known to be cheap. Question is, is their GM in trouble and would they jettison him to get Harbaugh to give him both roles. Because cheap ownership could kill 2 birds with 1 stone doing that.

Chicago is notoriously cheap when it comes to paying coaches. That plus it's hard to see Cutler and Harbaugh meshing together. Not really concerned about it.
December 16th, 2014 at 7:01 PM ^
Harbaugh is still under contract with the 49ers. They will decide where he goes if he stays in the NFL.

Kinda. He has a say in where they can trade him. Pride of Detroit said that Harbaugh must approve any trade of him. If he wants Chicago badly enough, he can block trades to eveywhere else. He can also block all trades and force them to fire him.
December 16th, 2014 at 7:13 PM ^
With a coach trade, he works out a new contract with a team and the 49ers agree to release him in exchange for picks. It's not just that he has to "approve" the trade, he has to sign a completely new contract with the team.
December 16th, 2014 at 7:15 PM ^
what the language is in Harbaugh's contract, but I'm guessing there aren't too many NFL teams who will trade for Harbaugh unless he signs an extension as part of the trade. He's only under contract through 2015. Whatever the language is in Harbaugh's contract I'm guessing he'll be able to kill any trade simply be refusing to sign an extension with the proposed new team.

we have a winner. this is the primary leverage he has over the niners, if he stays in the nfl. without signing an extension, SF is left holding the bag.
if JH goes to michigan, SF is left holding the bag without recourse. they have no leverage over him in this case.
December 16th, 2014 at 8:00 PM ^
as it has been from day 1, it's JH's decision on what he wants to do. he could give SF a few NFL teams to choose from or choose UM.

December 16th, 2014 at 8:12 PM ^
however, maybe JH needs more than one day after the end of the season to consider his options. NFL coaches are often fired right after the season, so maybe JH wants to know the entirety of his NFL options before he makes a decision.
being an optimist, i hope he has already decided on UM but must wait until after his season is over.

you would continue to coach in a bad NFL situation rather than let a team trade you to another organization? that seems odd to me.
this is a rare situation where a team sees value in their coach but wants him gone.

Also I doubt the Bears would pay him as much as Michigan. Bears are nearing rebuild mode.
Could you imagine Cutler and Harbaugh? That might not end well.

I can echo that sentiment. Obviously you'll have fans who like the Bears more than Michigan, but all things being equal, a great coach matters so much more at the college level than in the NFL (and that's with a personal belief that success in the NFL is largely dependent on your Head Coach and QB).
Yes, I just made the argument that college football and college basketball coaches should probably be paid more than their professional counterparts, especially NBA coaches.

The problem isn't that the Bears are old, the problem is that they are bad. Also, I wouldn't call Marshall a diva... he's actually been quite rejuvenized since coming to Chicago.

Any idea how much Emery makes? I honestly dont have a clue what a guy like Marrtin Mayhew makes as GM for the Lions. A quick google search for Emery salary was unsuccessful but I didnt spend too much time on it.
Trestman makes $4.25M. Other than the Raiders who are paying $3M every other coach makes at least $3.5M in the NFL. So if the GM is making $1M or $1.5M it is not a stretch to ay that they could offer Jim $6M and give him both roles and more or less hold their expenditures flat.

More than the blackhawks?
December 16th, 2014 at 7:07 PM ^
If the Bears job is available, that makes me nervous. That job is among a small handful of jobs that I'd think Harbaugh would be happy with. Damn, I really hope he comes to Michigan.
December 16th, 2014 at 7:07 PM ^
couple of things:
1) the bears don't usually get rid of guys early because they are indeed cheap and don't want to pay the buyout.
2) they would fire the GM as well; probably would want one in place before hiring the coach. this means their timeline would be well after ours.
December 16th, 2014 at 7:09 PM ^
The Bears have an organization history of patience with their head coaches, typically waiting at least four years before considering making a change. Trestman is finishing up his second season as Bears coach, and the last time the Bears made a switch after such a short period of time was in the late 1950s.
Wasn't that some guy named Paddy Driscoll, whose two seasons were sandwiched between the two halves of George Halas' long tenure? Not sure exactly what the circumstances there, but Driscoll still had a higher win percentage than Trestman does now, I believe.

I doubt they'll cut him just one year after giving him $54 million guaranteed.

The Bears are stuck with him for awhile. That contract is a monstrosity.

Cutting guys with contracts that large does serious damage to your cap. The Lions know this firsthand. Whatever they save will be in real financial terms. But cap wise it will be leave them in a bit of a pickle for a couple of years.

He can still be traded. Ask Jets and Bills fans how they feel about their QB situation.

I think they would rather draft QBs than take an overpaid, 30 year old mediocre QB

They're not cutting him until at 2017 at the earliest, but I can see them not trading or cutting Cutler because of his contract. It's an albatross.

Bears are headed in the wrong direction, and have a "can't get rid of" QB who is in almost every respect the anti-Harbaugh. If we are willing to give him a 6-7 year contract near top end of college scale, I doubt the financials of the Bears job would even be attractive.
December 16th, 2014 at 7:12 PM ^
The Bears are too cheap to buy Harbaugh's services...
