The Bears aren't going to pay him the 7-8 million he'd command. They're the least of my worries as far as competition with Michigan, and I'm a Bears fan. I mean, only a week or two ago everyone figured Trestman was safe because the Bears owners are cheap and wouldn't want to let Trestman go with multiple years left on his deal, but their hand has been forced by the team pretty obviously quitting on him.

With a coach trade, he works out a new contract with a team and the 49ers agree to release him in exchange for picks.  It's not just that he has to "approve" the trade, he has to sign a completely new contract with the team.

what the language is in Harbaugh's contract, but I'm guessing there aren't too many NFL teams who will trade for Harbaugh unless he signs an extension as part of the trade.  He's only under contract through 2015.  Whatever the language is in Harbaugh's contract I'm guessing he'll be able to kill any trade simply be refusing to sign an extension with the proposed new team.

we have a winner.  this is the primary leverage he has over the niners, if he stays in the nfl.  without signing an extension, SF is left holding the bag.

if JH goes to michigan, SF is left holding the bag without recourse.  they have no leverage over him in this case.

Jim has total control over his future. This is what few ever say anymore in the insanity that has built: Jim can't be wooed. He alone decides his fate, when and where. Why? He can jump to CFB at zero expense whenever he wants, he effectively has a no-trade clause where he can block any deal AND he has to agree to a new deal with whatever NFL team he accepts before the transfer (at least in principle and turned into the league office for enforcement). So, think of it this way: If Jim wants to be here the only thing holding him back is.....him. It could mean he is simply not going to quit a job no matter the circumstances (kind of noble even if quietly stubborn/wanting to stick it to SF), he wants to weigh his options at the end of the year (trading time/not sold on anything by almost the New Year) or he doesn't want to come back to CFB but it's so painfully obvious we ignore it. I don't know which it is and I suggest that few do, maybe not even Jim. However, he could leave SF today if he wanted to and SF has zero control over him. Firing him would cost them the only hope/knowledge they have of getting anything for him so they won't unless they hear he's delivered to UM. He won't quit because he is either not a quitter or is weighing his options. If a single day passes after the NFL season is over and we don't know, it's because he doesn't know. IMO, that is when you give him an hour to decide & move on with or without him. That's the thing. If he doesn't know by now, he's not in it. None of us should want a coach that is only here because they had no other option. IMO, Jim resigns as HC of the 49ers one business day after their last game to come to Michigan or you don't have him. He must have the offer in detail by now. He knows what is here. I'll go so far as to say that I don't want him a day beyond the first day he can be here after the first day of the NFL season is over. I can't help but think we'll know before the New Year. If not, call Les and kiss his ass. Let him savor that flavor for a half day and get him to AA. However, again, there is no way as a human being that Jim doesn't know right now. He either wants to return or he wants to exhaust every NFL option first. If the latter is true you move on. The silence on both sides is deafening in its awkwardness or obviousness.

however, maybe JH needs more than one day after the end of the season to consider his options.  NFL coaches are often fired right after the season, so maybe JH wants to know the entirety of his NFL options before he makes a decision.

being an optimist, i hope he has already decided on UM but must wait until after his season is over.

in finishing the job (this year in his case as it's all but said that he's out of SF)! I find that rather noble. However, in that space void app post I said the day after the day the season is over. So, I'll call it 2-2.5 days. He's in or out, man! Haha. He's a human being....barely...but human. He either wants to come to Michigan or exhaust every NFL option. If the latter is true, he was never an option as he's had what would be a month to decide. He knows the NFL, rosters, owners, etc. He'd either take an NFL offer or the Michigan offer that he has to have right now. So, it's dead Monday for all but 12 teams. IMO, you have 2.5 days to get him on paper or you move on. Again, the silence is either awkward or obvious. He's a HC but he's a human being. He's thought about it. Discussed it privately, etc. If he hasn't, you pull the offer. Who needs a month to know if they have enough interest to take a job & who would want someone that did? I get negotiations but he's agreed in 2.5 days or you're out. He's not f'n Bill Bellibaugh or Vince Lombarbaugh! He's Jim "I grew up in Bo's office and practically begged to play at UM" Harbaugh. He knows lol. If you get a call before Les is signed, fine. Yet, you start kissing Miles ass REAL hard Wednesday evening.

Lifelong Bears fan but I would rather see him at Michigan.

Also I doubt the Bears would pay him as much as Michigan. Bears are nearing rebuild mode.

Could you imagine Cutler and Harbaugh? That might not end well.

I can echo that sentiment. Obviously you'll have fans who like the Bears more than Michigan, but all things being equal, a great coach matters so much more at the college level than in the NFL (and that's with a personal belief that success in the NFL is largely dependent on your Head Coach and QB).

Yes, I just made the argument that college football and college basketball coaches should probably be paid more than their professional counterparts, especially NBA coaches.

Another Bears diehard here. Trestman is gone and Phil Emery (GM) is probably out as well. However, the Bears basically NEVER hire a coach with prior NFL HC experience. They also don't like to spend as much on HCs as others. I really don't the Bears are going to get in on the Harbaugh bidding war. Also, I'm not sure Harbaugh would want to deal with an aging football team that has tons of guaranteed money tied up in underperforming divas like Cutler & Marshall. If you tie all of that together, along with the relentless pressure of the Chicago media, I really don't think JH is going to the Bears.

The problem is the Bears are bad AND one of the oldest teams. They botched too many draft picks. Also, a lot of Bears insiders think they'll probably cut ties with Marshall. He has basically embarrassed the Bears by making press conferences that they frowned on, working for Showtime during the season, promoting a fight with a heckler on Twitter, and a number of other issues with management. He also had a down year on the field, filled with injuries.

Any idea how much Emery makes?  I honestly dont have a clue what a guy like Marrtin Mayhew makes as GM for the Lions.  A quick google search for Emery salary was unsuccessful but I didnt spend too much time on it.

Trestman makes $4.25M.  Other than the Raiders who are paying $3M every other coach makes at least $3.5M in the NFL.  So if the GM is making $1M or $1.5M it is not a stretch to ay that they could offer Jim $6M and give him both roles and more or less hold their expenditures flat.

They will still be paying Trestman as well though. Something they didn't want to have to do. They were planning on retaining him up until the shenanigans of the past 10 days or so (The OC Aaron Kromer leaking info anonymously, then owning up to it).

If the Bears job is available, that makes me nervous.  That job is among a small handful of jobs that I'd think Harbaugh would be happy with.  Damn, I really hope he comes to Michigan.

couple of things:

1) the bears don't usually get rid of guys early because they are indeed cheap and don't want to pay the buyout.

2) they would fire the GM as well;  probably would want one in place before hiring the coach.  this means their timeline would be well after ours.

The Bears have an organization history of patience with their head coaches, typically waiting at least four years before considering making a change. Trestman is finishing up his second season as Bears coach, and the last time the Bears made a switch after such a short period of time was in the late 1950s.

Wasn't that some guy named Paddy Driscoll, whose two seasons were sandwiched between the two halves of George Halas' long tenure? Not sure exactly what the circumstances there, but Driscoll still had a higher win percentage than Trestman does now, I believe.

Cutler is out of the equation. He's getting traded or cut. Guaranteed 15 million in 2015 and 10 million in 2016 if on roster in March of 2015. Team is not good comprised of mostly free agents and a horrible defense.

Bears are headed in the wrong direction, and have a "can't get rid of" QB who is in almost every respect the anti-Harbaugh.  If we are willing to give him a 6-7 year contract near top end of college scale, I doubt the financials of the Bears job would even be attractive.

Bears fan here. I am surprised that the Bears would get rid of Trestman since the McCaskey family is cheap. Even if Trestman and the GM get canned the real problem is Cutler. I doubt Harbaugh would want to deal with Cutler. I don't care who the coach is Cutler is what he is. He has a million dollar arm and a ten cent brain. No coach can fix him or make him better.
