CC: Stoops might actually be plausible?

Submitted by OccaM on

I'm listening to the Herd on ESPN Radio and Colin Cowherd is suggesting that a current coach who is NOT being circulated on blogs is being eyed for the gig. He also says Michigan fans will like it a lot. The name he said would come out this weekend. I figure if a national person is suggesting it, it must have some validity.

Could this be Stoops?

I just read Brian's link about how search firms are great as they can keep leaks/document requests confidential, yet somehow he knows a name floating around?

The search firm is great for establishing initial contact and gauging interest behind the scenes without everyone knowing about all the people you contact.  But If talks really heat up, then agents, athletic departments, and stuff get involved and confidentiality gets a lot harder.  Hell an agent might leak it him/herself it they think it will get the coach more money.

He was at Oakland for two of their last three playoff appearances, and lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion both times. That Oakland team under Bill Callahan that Tampa Bay beat in the Super Bowl was as much his as that Tampa Bay team was Tony Dungy's. (Although it got clobbered.)

I don't see him coaching again either, though.

I hope it's not Stoops. Oklahoma is a team that I follow (Uncle lives 1 mile from the stadium) and I haven't been very impressed with him lately. I thought this would be a good year for them, Knight looked good early, and Striker and the defense was looking good but then the bottom fell out. I would be pretty disappointed if Michigan hired Stoops. I would prefer Mora Jr over Stoops. It seems like Bob is losing a bit of steam in his coaching career. It's better than Schiano for obvious reasons, but I would prefer Les.

about the possibility of Stoops moving on (and M as a good fit) is pretty apposite, I'd say:

I didn't have much of an opinion about Stoops, but this opened my eyes to the possibilities. Watching a few youtube videos of interviews also made me a little more interested. He kind of LOOKS pretty vanilla but has a somewhat salty demeanor and--clearly--some brains.

I can understand some trepidation. Oklahoma has underachieved a fair amount in his tenure. I'll grant that there are some questions. I think his minuses are no worse than those of any other long-tenured coach not named Nick Saban, though. Literally everyone who has coached for a long time has some head scratching losses and disappointing seasons under their belt. Thing is, all potential candidates have downsides, and when we sign one, part of my process will be to talk myself into having hopes for the guy. Stoops will be pretty easy to talk myself into--there are a lot of pluses there.

I think you are giving Simps far too much credit.  How on earth has Stoops underachieved a fair amount?  By failing to hit the 10-win mark in a whopping 4 out of his 16 seasons?  Or was it when he didn't win the final game in three out of the FOUR times he had his team on the brink of a national championship?

Fans have a tendancy to say that a coach underachieves if he's really good but does anything short of Nick Saban.  If you coach a team and are really good and only win the national championship one time, you underachieved.  Because if you win it once, you need to win it all the times, or else you're not doing your job.  People say Mark Richt underachieves and people said Lloyd Carr underachieved, and I disagree with both but Stoops has done more than each of those guys.

thats insane, stoops would be a home run.  have you checked his resume and considered the total package, not just this season?  UM cannot just go get saban or meyer or chip kelly or one of other handful of top proven coaches in world (at least in my opinion).

but if they can go get proven guys like harbaugh or stoops (tho im not sure they will) then its no question.  stoops has won more than 10 games i think 12 times along with like 10 conference titles, 1 natl title, 6-7 BSC games, hes pretty legit.  the dude won 11 games and beat bama in sugar bowl last year.  not to mention when he has down years, its strictly 1 year deal and his teams / coaching staff have never looked as incompetent as hokes.

the guys a winner and if um somehow has a shot with him, its no brainer.  not sure how anyone can debate his ability or prefer les miles whos older, leaving LA's hotbed of recruiting and less likely option according to most reports.  and jim mora is building something at ucla so why would he just up and make a lateral move at best?  forget mora, why not go steal meyer or kelly?

So we're supposed to believe that the most deliberate program in college football...The one who took days to fire a guy who everyone knew was going to get fired because of some arbitrary process, is going to just say "fuck it," turn around, and make a coaching hire less than 48 hours later?

Morseo than with Miles. I'd still prefer Harbaugh by a little bit, but Stoops would be a homerun hire.

Anyone other than Schiano, Norv Turner, or Shanahan.

enough time to build something and still be around for a decade or more.  He's from Youngstown, the hotbed of football really, and played in the Big Ten.

Obvious canidate if he wasn't at Oklahoma.  Maybe he would like a new challenge.
