CC: Sam Webb sees change coming

Submitted by dnak438 on

Nothing revolutionary but I thought it was worth pointing out that Sam Webb doesn't "see a scenario" in which Hackett doesn't make a change at the end of the season:

http://michigan.scout.com/story/1483906-recap-after-u-m-loss-retention-…

EDIT: quotes for those who don't want to load the video:

Yeah, I think that this loss, just...really undercut Brady. I think it undercut the retention chances that he had. ...

I just don't see a scenario at this point with this loss where Jim Hackett looks at it and says he's gonna not make a change. ...

That's not based on anything I've been told... I think this game kinda, I think it does him in.

that Brady could save his job for another year, and this terrified people, because Sam is well-connected. There was a lot of discussion about this in one of the podcasts (I forget which) in which Brian and Ace decided that some people with connections weren't necessarily talking from knowledge but rather from a general feeling for how Michigan would probably proceed.

If Sam is saying that he can't save his job, then we can breathe a little bit easier.

EDIT: It's basically important as an a fortiori argument: if even Sam thinks Hoke can't save his job...

Up until yesterday evening, winning out was statistically possible, of course, but obviously not very likely - pre-game estimate would have been about 4% or so. If indeed Hoke's chances at rentention were tied somehow to winning out, then his rentention was pretty unlikely too. With even that possibility gone and the prospect of bowl eligibility running through OSU now, retention would be unfathomable, in my opinion.

Sam was getting ripped by the fan base up until about two weeks ago. He started back tracking about two weeks ago, and qualifying his prior predictions. From all accounts Sam is well connected, especially on the recruiting scene.

But, he was definitely the most cautious if not tempered with his brandon gone, hoke gone, and harbaugh in predictions. It seems like others beat him to the punch a few times which caused him to change courses.

This will all play out in a few months, and we will see how credible everyone's sources and intuition are.

The problem is that Chris Singletary is one of Webb's sources. So if Webb bad-mouths the coaching staff or says they're going to get fired, he's going to piss off Singletary and/or others. Webb needs inside info to do his job well, so he has to walk a fine line.

It's like a lot of things. There are certain things about which Webb should be trusted (recruiting, mainly), and there are certain things about which he probably shouldn't be (coaching changes, for example).

It pains me to see my man Sam Webb so depressed.  Keep your head up Sam.  Can't wait to get excited about recruiting again, maybe next year.  Flint town!!

So how long after Brady is fired will Sam post an article about how he was the first to report that Brady would in fact be fired, pointing to this article as proof?

I understand people don't want to believe but if Michigan had won out. Hoke would be the Coach next year.

Hackett doesn't give a shit about recruiting, and why would he? Has great talent done anything?

If Michigan had beaten Maryland, OSU and won a bowl game, Hoke's back. But, the chances were slim and now that's over.

all this week.  Sam and Ira are trying to preserve their connections.  Sam has been unbelieveable for at least a month.  Anyone connected to Hoke has had his back all season.  Nice guy but so in over his head in this job.

At least now, no one can claim he should stay.  It has to end now.

The only question is, can Hackett get Jim to say yes.  IF not, Les better be coming or we are officially Purdue.

I think Hoke has changed the tide on the rivalry. Hell people in Ohio are starting to believe him. Never in a million years I would have thought that. Selling Michigan jerseys is a good start.

So this is the moment everyone who thought Sam Webb was in any way reasonable in the last month realizes he was just spouting nothing but wishful thinking just to push against the grain and keep up the company line.

Getting a new coach will help recruiting. Any coach. There's always buzz and the promise of at least three or four years of program stability.

Getting a coach with NFL experience or a track record in college of sending lots of guys to the NFL will maybe even improve our recruiting.
