CC: JUB Interview re: his thoughts on the coaching search

Submitted by michgoblue on

John U. Bacon was interviewed on myfoxdetroit last night following the Michigan football bust, and of course the topic shifted to the coaching search.  For those who don't want to listen, JUB said:

1.  He believes that Harbaugh is still Michigan's top choice and that JH is still considering the option.

2.  He does not believe the recent NFL.com and similar NFL-source reports that Harbaugh has rejected Michigan.

3.  He also does not believe reports that Harbaugh is "signed, sealed, delivered" to Michigan.

4.  He believes that even Harbaugh doesn't know at this point.

5.  If we do not land Harbaugh, JUB still believes that we would end up with Miles.  His reasoning is that Hackett knows that much of the fanbase wants Miles if Harbaugh says no, and that Hackett is very good at listening to the fanbase.

6.  Finally, JUB says that we are in for a few more weeks of speculations because "all sides" are entering a "dark period."   (I think that we have been there since last Tuesday, as we have heard NOTHING of substance - only media speculation going in every possible direction - from anyone other than the sourced "searchbits" from Brian).

Nothing new or earthshattering, although JUB's take on Miles differs from what many here think.  I always took Hackett's comments about looking for a coach who can win withing shenanigans to mean that Les was unlikely, but who knows.

Do you seriously think that Bacon is contacting these media outlets himself so that he can then give his opinion?

If you're a writer, and you want to sell as many books as possible—he's got bills to pay and groceries to buy just like the rest of us—you're not going to tell ESPN or the Detroit News or any other media outlet who's contacted him, "No thanks, I don't have any new information, so I won't talk to you."

I agree that he doesn't have any new information, but then I'm not complaining since nobody's forcing me to read the OP.

I will never understand the dislike for one of our own (because that's what Miles is) who wins 78% of his games and has a national title.

Yes, you saw that number--78% of his games and there are Michigan fans here who say "fuck him" or "he sucks."

Some of you people absolutely blow my mind.

I think I've said this in every CC thread, but it has to be one of Harbaugh, Miles or Stoops. I just dont see any scenario where it cant be one of those guys. Its probably just wishful thinking because those are my top 3 guys.

I keep hearing, on this board, miles, stoops, etc.  I doh't think they're fucking around. The postioion coupled with the check book will bring a top shelf candidate. The past seven years can all go away with the right hire and miles, stoops or bert ain't cutting it.

if they don't get JH, I expect a big name with a proven record of winning.

Did you just say that Stoops or Miles wouldn't cut it because they are not big enough names?!? These are two of the winningest coaches of our times, each with a national championship ring and multiple conference championships. Both are undeniably top 10 coaches in the country.

If you conducted a poll of informed college football fans and asked them to rank top coaches, I would posit that the only coaches decidedly ahead of Stoops and Miles or Saban and Meyer (yuck). Others might be close but not decidedly ahead.

Harbaugh will bring power foootball back to AA. Tyrone Wheatley style - with a pro style gunslinger at QB ... & NFL grade receivers. Defense will be mean & punishing.

I just heard a clip from a guy on 107.3 wbbl talking about a source stating Jack Harbaugh said that if Michigan gets Jim it's it he will retire at Michigan. Did anybody hear this recently on the morning show 6am-9am time slot?

I think I have read far too much about the coach search, and information is getting mixed in my head.

What are the FACTS about the coaching search? What do we know has happened? No speculation, no third person accounts from someone who talked to Harbaugh's vet. What do we know to be 100% true?

We know nothing. The closest that I would go is trusting what Brian has posted in the most recent search bits - #X. Seems like there is at least come concrete information re: a meeting with Harbaugh, a regents /Schlissel meeting and donors being willing to chip in to make it happen.

> Hackett is very good at listening to the fanbase.

Yeah, there's his needle to thread. He has to make a hire that people are excited about now, bc we sure need something to get excvited about, but it has to be someone he believes we will still be excited about in five years. He needs to listen to the fanbase but can't be entirely captured by our sentiment. Which is to say, he may be good at listening to the fanbase but he also has to be willing to not give us what we want (for purposes of this discussion, JH is assumed to be gettable).

The only way I'd want to be Hackett right now is if one Harbaugh or another -- any of them -- is texting me Good Morning every damn day.

to the actual football on the field.  In my experience most fans are dumb, myself included.

As a Browns fan I thought Brady Quinn was going to be awesome, case closed.

Yeah, it’s kind of funny. I agree with him stating that it’s time for the whole “Michigan Man” mantra and ideal to go away. However, it just so happens that the two guys that most people want and two of the most qualified have heavy Michigan ties. If UM fails to get one of these two, I think that is a very negative indication of the perceived state of Michigan football.
