That letter sounds like he really wanted to come here. I feel awful for the kid. I don't like offering or "offering" scholarships and then pulling them later after the kid commits. I know it's a point of contention and people are cool with it. I still don't think Michigan should do it.

Timing is everything. I'm not a big fan of the practice but it is early September. Kid has plenty of time to take visits and find a good landing spot.
September 9th, 2016 at 2:48 PM ^
What's the alternative? Either you offer kids and express in a timely manner if interest changes or you don't offer anyone until after their senior season is done/your absolutely certain you want them on the team. I don't know why people still view a scholarship offer as definite scholarship. Nothing is definite until you sign the LOI.
September 9th, 2016 at 3:00 PM ^
to wait and not offer a kid you are that unsure of until you get a chance to watch them play their senior year. This is especially true with a legacy recruit like Dunaway who would likely flip a commitment to Michigan if they offered late in the process.
September 9th, 2016 at 3:21 PM ^
You could view this through a different lens. But, the standard on MGoBlog is through a negative one. Nobody outside of Michigan would know who Carter Dunaway was if Michigan hadn't offered him. They gave him a ton of exposure. Other schools offered after we did and they most likely wouldn't have if Michigan hadn't. The wussification of America continues.
September 9th, 2016 at 3:25 PM ^
Then you risk getting in on a player's recruitment too late (which likely wouldn't have been a problem with Carter but would in other scenarios), as has been a frequent problem with basketball recruiting lately. I don't mind the early offers. Sometimes it lands you a gem like O'Maury Samuels (who received his first major offer from us and now we have a leg up on all the other major programs that are looking at him)

but a kid can decommitt or change his mind for any reason at anytime? you have no clue what was said between the two. stop trying to make someone out as the villian.

in order to compete with Alabama we have to be Alabama?
September 9th, 2016 at 2:43 PM ^
I gotta think that the coaches are up front about this scenario happening when the kid commits. As we saw with some of our late decommits last year: the time they were committed helped raise their profile. The only thing that sucks with this is the legacy aspect. I wish legacies could have scholarships that didn't count against the 85 limit.
September 9th, 2016 at 3:43 PM ^
You said the key thing: as long as they are upfront about it.
If I was a committed recruit and the coaches didn't think I would ever play much, I would want to know.
Either way, Carter handled it with class and I really hope he finds success on some other team.

Michigan offered him when he was a backup on this High School team. He hadn't even earned a starting spot and Michigan offers him.
Regardless of where the recruiting class ends up, seems Harbaugh likes to get there in the sloppiest way possible.

Might just be a case of looking at the depth chart and thinking "I might get more playing time somewhere else".

Leonard Taylor was the softest of soft verbals. I said this months ago since he had virtually nothing telling people he was committed on his twitter.

I'm sure Taylor is a guy we would've kept. But Johnson and Irvin may be a case of Harbaugh starting over in the 2018 cycle

Nah. Everything will be fine.
This whole summer has been great evidence that following recruiting too closely is just a waste of time. Sad to see any commit leave, but its not going to stop happening until the rules about how early players can commit change, and probably not even then. This year's freshman class is all the evidence I need that JH et al know what they're doing .
Wake recruiting me up after the season is over.

why is everyone leaving?! should i be panicking?! i recognize the answer is most likely no, but i still wonder if it's actually yes.
