Carson Palmer reveals names for USC opening

Submitted by Ezekiels Creatures on October 25th, 2021 at 10:14 PM

Both Domani Jackson and his dad said they will be watching who USC hires. It's going to factor in to what school they finally settle with. Both Domani Jackson and his dad like Steve Clinkscale a lot. But they both also like Donte Williams, DBs/interim HC at USC. He was the reason Jackson chose USC. But now, with the state that USC football is in, a lot of things are up in the air for Domani Jackson. Who is chosen as next head coach will make or break his view of USC.

Carson Palmer revealed some names that are being kicked around behind the scenes for HC at USC:

James Franklin

Matt Campbell

Luke Fickell

Mike Tomlin (a moment later after revealing this one he reacted like he shouldn't have)

He concluded the list by saying, "There's a lot of great options," making it sound like there's more names

Tomlin hasn't coached in the college level for 21 years. And if he wants a change of scenery, there are plenty of NFL teams that would be happy to hire him. Bears are likely to have an opening with a decently strong defense and a high potential QB. Raiders already have an opening. Giants/Eagles would take the upgrade. Probs Denver too.

To be fair, football is football. If Tomlin can coach in the NFL he can coach in college.

And I imagine he could recruit. Hi kids  would you like to meet all these NFL stars I spent years coaching. Come to USC.

Also I can't picture Tomlin coaching anywhere else in the NFL. College though, he could be reverse Pete Carroll

Just speculating. This all seems logical to me.

Of course Mike Tomlin could be a successful college coach -- but the question is, why the hell would he go to USC?

He currently works at a legendary NFL franchise for an ownership family that is pro football royalty, who is known for being loyal and deferential to their coaches (they've had like 3 in 50 years). If he wanted to leave the Steelers, for some reason, he could name his price and go coach the Bears, Giants, Raiders, or any other team that will have an opening next year.

He's at the pinnacle of his sport and is not like Harbaugh (who had a shit owner and an opportunity to go back to his alma mater) or Saban (who wasn't succeeding at high level in the NFL). Palmer is just pipe dreaming by including Tomlin's name.

Because USC is in LA, would pay too dollar, and is one great coach away from being a powerhouse. I think Tomlin is a pipe dream, but if he wanted a refreshing change of pace…USC would be an incredible fit and he would kill it.

Helton should never have been hired and has been garbage. Fickell is not coming to USC.

He would kill it at USC... but I don't know if college coaching is a "refreshing change of pace". Dealing with alumni, players grades, players activities, NIL, recruiting 24/7 365, ect... college seems like more work and less family time. I just don't see a coach in the NFL going back to college to grind away when their work load in the NFL is heavy for 6 months, and then pretty light for the other 6 when compared to college

Harbaugh was obviously the closest, and many thought that was never going to happen, but college coaches make NFL money now.  That wasn't true until a few years ago.

Tomlin is currently making $8M per year.  James Franklin is making $7M and apparently believes he can make more.

Apparently, USC is preparing to pay Saban money (~$9.5M) in order to even consider these guys.

I believe he is referring to Pete Carroll sarcastically.. although I'm not sure "successful" would be the way to describe his fist stint in the NFL, he was mediocre in the league prior to taking the USC job.

Tomlin seems highly, highly unlikely, but he has been the Steelers HC for over a decade now and they've had a couple good-not-great seasons in a row with this one trending the same way. I would not be totally surprised if he and the front office agree to mutually part ways. He would still have at least half a dozen NFL offers on his desk by the time he got home from his press conference though. Hard to see him passing up another gig in the league in favor of going to recruit in Los Angeles.

A winning USC has every Hollywood connection you could want if you're a fame seeking whore. A mediocre USC is minor league football in a shitty stadium in a shitty part of town with a miniscule fan base. A losing USC is free ticket giveaway machine with a high probability of getting stabbed or mugged walking to the stadium from your gated academic community.

Guess you have never been to a Dodgers Game, or a Rams Game at SoFi, or an LAFC Game, or a Lakers Game or a USC Game during the Pete Carroll era…saying LA fans suck is such a funny comment these days from people that know not what they speak of.  I have 8 seats for USC Games…Pete Carroll days were crazy…and that team ran the city.  USC Games only started to lose fans during the Helton era because he is a shit coach that should never have been hired, but he got lucky and beat UCLA and Notre Dame as an interim coach.

I have to disagree with this take man. There's been many college coaches that came from the NFL who did not succeed, and vice versa. Football is football from an X's and O's stand point yes, but it's a different level of the sport and there's more involvement regarding development in college. Not saying Tomlin wouldn't succeed, just saying you can't expect him to be successful just because he had success in the NFL

I would even think NFL football is a bit more advanced in an X’s and O’s standpoint. Part of the struggle NFL guys have can be attributed to not having the players to execute those Xs and Os and those guys not grasping the concepts as well as NFL players.

I remember Charlie Weis talking about his schematic advantage and then it just never clicked at ND.

I think a big part of Charlie's problem at Notre Dame was player development. He did reasonably well with Willingham's players his first two years, and it wasn't until the upperclassmen he inherited were gone that Notre Dame started to struggle.

The Xs and Os didn't help, though.

The transition from NFL coach back to college is not that easy for recruiting. Player evaluation is a huge challenge. You aren’t evaluating fully grown men for draft picks, you are evaluating linemen who have to put 40-50 lbs on and/or reshape some of the weight they do carry in a college S&C program.

rating services get a lot wrong and it doesn’t seem much easier for coaching staffs. So yeah, when he finds a kid he likes he can introduce him to an NFL player and that’s cool. Is it as cool as the cash and championships other schools can offer? Will the kid really believe he needs to Tomlin to get to the NFL or will he recognize that lots of programs can help him?

He talked shit and immediately went out and threw 3 picks.

His mechanics are shit, his reads are shit, he could out-athlete players in college but not in the pros.

Future Bust if not already based on what the Bears paid to get him.

I stand by my opinion.

Possibly, but more so that he needs a successful change of QBs. While Big Ben still occasionally has a good game these days, most of the time he's running on fumes.

I can see Tomlin staying on as Steelers head coach if he thinks he has someone to step in at QB next season, even if it's a draft pick needing a season to get up to speed.

But I can also see him moving elsewhere (including possibly college I suppose, though I kinda doubt it) if the Steelers continue to struggle this season and don't come up with a viable successor at QB.

I absolutely don't see him sticking around in Pittsburgh if it becomes a full rebuild situation there, and right now it's looking more and more to me like the Steelers are seriously in need of a talent transfusion if they're serious about keeping up with Cinci, Baltimore, and the Browns.

As a Steelers fan, I'm ready for the team to make a change.  The need new ideas.  Maybe a new up and coming coach with a young rookie QB.  Time to tear it down on offense.  Ben needs to retire.

Maybe a rookie QB and new Offense scheme will renew Tomlin's fire, but he seems to have lost it.

Mike Tomlin has the most stable job in all of professional sports. USC is on to their 3rd head coach since 2015. The Steelers have had 3 head coaches since 1969. Why would he give that up for the honor of dealing with recruiting in the age of NIL, never-satisfied alumni and donors, and all the things young men can get into in LA late at night? It's like having 25 Antonio Browns on your team at once.

The man has never posted a losing season in 15 years as a HC. Think about that, ye Lions fans.

Tomlin doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that's going to leave following one bad season in the NFL... this would be his first losing season ever with the Steelers.

And the Rooney's aren't firing him...considering that this organization doesn't do that and that they love him there.

USC is a great name, but does anyone in LA actually care about the Trojans? Not in the way they care about the Steelers that's for sure...It'd be going into a football purgatory with the same rebuilding issues that Pittsburgh is going into...

Except one team is in the best league in the world and the other struggles to get to 60% capacity attendance

Frames makes more sense than Campbell or Fickell. He's got a much more Hollywood vibe than those two.

if he gets the job and manages to keep Williams in the fold, I think Domani stays with them.

WayOfTheRoad

I think the open secret is that Domani sticks with USC if the new HC retains Williams. They could hire just about anyone and that coach will have to decide if Williams worth keeping as a coach and/or if he's worth keeping for a year to retain Domani Jackson.

Williams can recruit and he's a solid coach so the new guy would have to have a DB staff he's married to in order to not retain Williams (assuming Williams will want to stay).

It's why I've never thought Domani comes here. He either would have flipped soon after that Washington visit or not and he didn't. He wants to go to USC and USC will have all opportunity to keep him. If Domani ends up here it'll be because the new USC HC didn't find any single recruit worth the problems of hiring a guy they don't want on staff.
