Big Ten Helmets ranked by some Oregon writer
Highlights:
- Most of the Big Ten has boring helmets
- Michigan's iconic helmets are now #2 in the Big Ten
- Whatever is going on with Oregon's helmet is now #1

Michigan has the best helmets in the universe. If you disagree, you’re wrong.
this reeks of “Oregon guy pandering to Oregon fans”
August 11th, 2023 at 4:19 PM ^
It's both an Oregon writer pandering to Oregon readers and a half-assed listicle intended purely to generate page views and ad revenue with as little effort as possible.
Let me quote for you:
I’m not sure what you call that design that the Wolverines have up front...
While I don't expect a deep dive into the history of Michigan's helmets, but I do expect the cursory research that would tell the writer that the design is the "winged" part of the winged helmets.
August 11th, 2023 at 4:30 PM ^
What's interesting is that he put Michigan as high as #2 despite not knowing what that design is. It's probably that he found some other list for a reasonable start, shuffled it a little as he saw fit, then put Oregon on top.

"a half-assed listicle intended purely to generate page views and ad revenue with as little effort as possible."
99% of the sites I visit on mobile these days. The profusion of endless pop-ups and insterstitials is maddening.
August 11th, 2023 at 10:35 PM ^
Clearly Oregon is the ultimate authority on what wings on helmets should look like....
/s, just in case
August 12th, 2023 at 2:12 AM ^
Let's be real though. Those aren't wings. They're feathers.
August 11th, 2023 at 4:36 PM ^
Came to say precisely this. There's a reason high school teams all over the country copy and paste the winged design in differing colors.
The only thing close, unfortunately, is the golden Notre Dame helmet. Or in the NFL, the rams horn design.
Everything else is a racing stripe or boring stamp Letter.
Oregon's unending variants are fun and a welcome addition, but are still gimmicks and don't belong among the timeless classics.
August 11th, 2023 at 8:02 PM ^
I'm also not sure why ohio's helmet, with anuses all over it, is appealing.
August 12th, 2023 at 1:36 PM ^
Those are pot leaves.
August 11th, 2023 at 8:21 PM ^
I never really cared for Notre Dame's helmets, though I think my opinion is probably colored by my bias against the team. I think they look gaudy and I never found the gold flake in the paint all that interesting from an aesthetic or technical standpoint.
August 12th, 2023 at 5:13 AM ^
As long as we don't ever do some christmas bulb/beetleborg bullshit.
August 12th, 2023 at 12:24 AM ^
I viewed it like this.
It was clearly written by an Oregon slappy. So Oregon really didn’t count due to bias.
So they are eliminated. And we win.
And I have always really liked the Penn State helmets as #2.
August 11th, 2023 at 4:19 PM ^
What a dumb list and rationale for the rankings. Clearly the intellectual reasoning prowess of a 12 year old.
"Helmets with just a letter on them are too plain and boring." Then he proceeds to put PSU #11 b/c it's simple, not plain! Washington #10 b/c shiny colors! IU #6 because it has two letters and two stripes! Wisconsin #5 because the W is slanted!
That was a waste of time and Billy Madison dumber for having read it something something.
August 11th, 2023 at 4:22 PM ^
As best I can tell, the writer just Googled "[school name] football helmet" (or grabbed the stock helmet images from USA Today's photo library), added some rankings, and then added a post hoc stream-of-consciousness rationalization.
August 11th, 2023 at 4:20 PM ^
"I’m not sure what you call that design that the Wolverines have up front, but it’s a classic and should never be changed."
Is he serious? Does he not know the winged helmet?
August 11th, 2023 at 4:20 PM ^
Which Oregon helmet? There's like 30 of them.
August 11th, 2023 at 5:12 PM ^
Which is why Oregon uniforms and helmets stink. Be distinct and be consistent. The best designs and logos are the ones that stand the test of time and become iconic. Oregon actively avoids that.
August 11th, 2023 at 4:21 PM ^
Boring is changing your helmet every week and finishing with 3 to 8 losses in a sorry conference.
August 11th, 2023 at 6:21 PM ^
Hey - the B1G is NOT a sorry conference!
August 11th, 2023 at 7:18 PM ^
At MSU, they call these weapons not helmets.
August 11th, 2023 at 4:26 PM ^
the novelty of oregon's uniforms wore off 5+ years ago. Why do people still care
August 11th, 2023 at 5:21 PM ^
Always a new crop of 13 year olds with no taste.
August 11th, 2023 at 4:39 PM ^
My take?
An Oregon writer putting Oregon first because Oregon.
Then turning submissive, sucking up to the teams that can beat Oregon worst in the hopes that they'll go easy on a team who's got a fanboy who likes their helmets.
August 11th, 2023 at 4:43 PM ^
A bit more shocking to me was the "QBU" list in a linked USA Today article: https://duckswire.usatoday.com/lists/oregon-ducks-named-among-best-qb-schools-in-nation-per-espn/?itm_source=parsely-api
No mention of Michigan on that list despite Brady, Henne, Henson, Harbaugh, Navarre, Grbac, Leach, Griese, Franklin, etc.
Yet these schools make the list:
#3 OSU: JT Barrett (2014-17), CJ Stroud (2020-22) , Art Schlichter (1978-81), Bobby Hoying, Joe Germaine (1996-98) Hoying and Germaine???
#4 Texas: Legends such as Colt McCoy, Sam Ehlinger, Major Applewhite, James Brown, Peter Gardere (but apparently no Vince Young!!!)
August 11th, 2023 at 5:17 PM ^
I suppose you could say OSU has a recent rate of success in getting QBs drafted, but the next time that an OSU QB does something productive in the NFL may be the first time.
That's like putting Washington State on the list because Ryan Leaf got drafted #2 overall once.
August 11th, 2023 at 10:20 PM ^
I mean that’s not exactly a fair comparison considering the guys that have gotten drafted from there recently - Haskins and Fields were top 15 picks and Stroud was number 2 overall. That’s much better than WSU can say and much more recently.
August 12th, 2023 at 4:18 PM ^
the next time that an OSU QB does something productive in the NFL may be the first time.
That's not really fair. Tom Tupa was a damn good punter.
August 11th, 2023 at 5:28 PM ^
I suppose, the stats in that Ducks article are all NCAA stats? No Purdue, or Michigan, or PSU/MSU. Oof!
Fascinating to read the underlying ESPN article as well.
August 12th, 2023 at 2:34 PM ^
That list is a combination of college, where they were drafted and NFL, they also say that they limit the NFL production to their first five years. Henne I think is the only one playing, and it's not like UM has had QB production like the other colleges.
August 12th, 2023 at 4:51 PM ^
The list has Louisville but fails to mention Johnny Unitas pretty much says it all.
August 11th, 2023 at 4:43 PM ^
Any school that has multiple versions of a helmet is automatically in a group behind every team that does not (including being behind the boring-ass PSU helmet). Also, any helmet with a cartoon character on it should be disqualified and not given a rating
August 11th, 2023 at 4:46 PM ^
So they were ranked by appearance? Because if they were ranked according to lethality, pretty sure a different Michigan school would have made the list.
August 11th, 2023 at 4:47 PM ^
man, i'm already sick of those dumbasses.
August 11th, 2023 at 5:01 PM ^
My counter:
-Most of the Big Ten has CLASSIC helmets
-Michigan's iconic helmets are now and forever have been and forever will be #1 in the universe, which is basically the big ten now
-Whatever is going on with Oregon's helmet is...#2. I like their silliness. For them. They're cool. Just not as cool as us.
August 11th, 2023 at 5:08 PM ^
If you know a Penn State fan, please be sure to post Trigger Warning; they are not going to be happy.
August 11th, 2023 at 5:09 PM ^
I loved their old-school green-and-white striped interlocking UO helmets --- with Donald Duck bursting through the O on the shoulder. 1995 was the last year for these.
August 11th, 2023 at 5:48 PM ^
Those sucked, too. But being a Nittany Lions fan, I could see why you think those are sexy AF. :)
August 12th, 2023 at 4:23 PM ^
What a coincidence...wasn't 1996 the year of Knight's first major contribution to the athletic department?
August 11th, 2023 at 5:25 PM ^
I tried, but…
Made it three helmets in before I decided the writer was exhibit A in “Why people in Oregon are fucking insufferable.” And quit reading.
August 11th, 2023 at 5:30 PM ^
Yeah, I don't care if Michigan wears fresh off the manufacturing line unpainted and unstriped helmets. Oregon is going to get their beat down beginning in 2024.
August 11th, 2023 at 5:47 PM ^
We're in for an insufferable lot of this.
August 11th, 2023 at 5:47 PM ^
I don't really care about helmets but nothings show the age disconnect between myself and "the kids" that Oregon's highlighter-on-clip-art style helmets are considering cutting-edge and cool. When you are constantly changing your style that's usually a sign you haven't quite nailed it and find the current version lacking, not that you nailed it once and then kept nailing it again and again.
August 11th, 2023 at 5:49 PM ^
I got exceptionally drunk the other night and wandered over to 11 Warriors. They had a thread about football uniforms--which were the best "besides OSU."
They had to make it clear no one was allowed to vote for Michigan's helmets because....obviously.
My IQ has since recovered. Thank you for your concern.
August 11th, 2023 at 6:03 PM ^
I'd say stay in your lane but you fuckheads haven't even gotten in the car.
Here's to your Quacks becoming the next Nebrasker.

I'll take helmet advice from a Ducks' fan right after I take sex advice from a nun.
August 11th, 2023 at 10:23 PM ^
I was raised Catholic. One of the best times I ever had with with a girl from Mercy HS who went on to become a nun later in life.
August 11th, 2023 at 11:47 PM ^
I married a Mercy girl. She might as well be a nun these days.
August 12th, 2023 at 9:50 AM ^
You would think as a dictator and reportedly the wealthiest person in the history of the world, you’d have more options?
August 11th, 2023 at 6:20 PM ^
I guess that being “that team that never wears the same uniform twice” is certainly A THING to be known for. But it doesn’t make you iconic in any way.
It means that any time an Oregon fan have a clear memory of their football team, the players in that memory don’t resemble the players currently on the field.
Every so often, I see an Oregon uniform and think “hey that looks REALLY cool.” And then I never see that color combo again.
