Anyone that slows down the Alabama death star and the League of Extraordinary Bagmen is OK by me.
I know every fan base has its knuckleheads, but every Bama fan I've ever met has been gracious, knowledgable and respectful. That includes the couple that checked into this site around the time of the game in Jerry World a few seasons ago. (One congratulated me for my sophistication, "for a Yankee," when I asked about the Auburn Degree and the Roll Tide poster on the wall of his office.)
And while I'm on this stream of conciousness, Andy Staples is normally an insightful commentator who has solid thoughts worth considering. We Michigan fans don't always agree with him, but he's generally not stupid. Which is why I was surprised to see him file a column today with the most inane, obvious and consistently wrong premise in all of sports. "These two teams will play again in next year's championship!" Really?! You're going to ride with that? Any team, no matter how much more talented than their opponents, has to navigate a minefield of losable games to get to a Championship. Sure, this year was a rematch. That is a vanishingly unlikely result. If rematch was merely a premise to talk about how much talent the two teams have coming back, and their history of "reloading" (another canard that is done to death by everyone from the student newspaper to high priced color analysts on major network telecasts), just say "they could be back..."

"What happened, coach?"
"Well I really thought we had it, up until God stepped in and asserted His will for a Clemson victory. This was all prophesied in the book of Revelations though, so I guess you could say we should have seen it coming."

Saban to Rams?

all the best recruits and still can't win.
been saying it for years, saban is not that great of a coach. he has the best players.
January 10th, 2017 at 12:42 AM ^
on MgoBlog. Saban built Bama into this. He gets these players because of the success he created.
He also won a national title at LSU which, like Bama, was woebegone before he got there.
Saban is among the all time greats in college football. That is undisputed.

Saban is obviously a great college football head coach, not sure how anybody could debate that.
I think some would argue that he's not a great tactical or strategic coach in that he only wins because he has superior talent. Some would look to his NFL career as evidence to support this.
That said...he was solid at MSU, rebuilt LSU to a national title, and now built a Bama dynasty. Whatever his recruiting methods, there's no doubt that he can build a program, from player acquisition to hiring the right assistant coaches.

He hires guys to run it, but tactically it is his.
The man was Bill Belichick's DC for four years. I think he more than good tactically and strategically.

You could argue that he was a mentor to Dantonio during their time together at State and that Dantonio represents a return to what Saban had been doing there.

Coaching a bunch of 5 star players isn't easy, either. Only people who have never coached think it is that simple. It's arguably harder to take a bunch of players who were the best of the best wherever they came from and make them put their egos aside and play together at the highest level. There's no logical reason to try to discredit that.
