Michigan is still set to have four centers and two true guards (Walton and Rahk) in 2016 at this moment.  That may well change, but I think the timing of adding Davis before a guard - particularly a point guard - was odd, though in retrospect Coach Beilein knew Hatch's scholarship was very likely to be available when he offered Davis.

I thought about the roster distribution a bit after Davis committed and realized that Michigan had five center-types in 2012-2013: McLimans, Beilfeldt, McGary, Morgan, and Horford.  But they also had Trey, Spike, LeVert, Hardaway, Stauskas, and Vogrich.  So there were a lot of guys who were very comfortable playing in the backcourt and/or handling the ball.

The 2016 guard-ish players right now will be (in addition to Walton and Rahk) Chatman, Irvin, and Robinson.  At this moment, that doesn't leave you with as many ballhandlers as you'd like for a Beilein offense.  It's not a huge issue, but it's not nothing either.

A final thought:  It's possible right now, though admittedly not likely, that Michigan ends up in a scholarship crunch in which it can't take a new PG in 2016 and therefore has to add two new PGs in 2017.

Summary:  I don't feel bad about wondering whether adding Davis at this time was the greatest idea.

My concern was never that Davis wasn't a good player.  It was more in terms of team needs and roster balance.  If Davis reclassifies as a 2017 then that alleviates those concerns.

In any event, it looks like Davis is a pretty good prospect and JB may have got in before some other prospects.

Having two centers in the 2016 class still seems like weird roster management to me. Happy to be wrong and see it all work out but my issue with the offer was really only like 25% based on Austin Davis the player.

It's hard not to think that this is just 247 saying "well shit, everyone Beilien identifies as offer worthy ends up being at least 4* talent, lets just give it to him and chances are we'll look smart"

That's what i'd do if I were them.

essentially went from a 3* to a 4* once we offered.  It is just something that happens with major college offers.  For those now chastising those who were concerned about the balance factor of the team, why is 247's change any more valid tnow than the previous lower one? Live with players rankings; die with player rankings.

Now rated higher than John Teske. I didn't know what to think when he first committed but I'm liking this pick up more and more as time passes. All hail Beilein.

which is perfectly reasonable in recruiting; everything is retrospect. No one cares we had great football recruiting classes when States' players are better. Here, Beilein gets credit if this is a true bump and he spotted a developing kid at the bottom of his peak trajectory development curve. Not sure why this is a problem.

Furthermore, what will make you happy? We are currently thought to be in the drivers seat for the top overall prospect and a kid who committed to us is now thought more highly after he became known.

He freaked out about the rankings for a 16 year old kid and said a bunch of awful shit about a young man who committed to play basketball at a school he's ostensibly a fan of.  People pointed out both that the rankings were likely to improve (as they did with guys like Stauskas, GRIII, etc.) and that the kids Beilein offers tend to end up being good at basketball regardless of their ranking (a'la Burke, Spike, LeVert, Dawkins, etc.).

That's why he's been repeatedly banned from this site and makes up new cartoon characters a few times a year so he can return and post his uninformed horseshit incessantly.

There is no reason to argue with him.

Impossible. Most people on this site were upset that when he was 16 years old he could barely dunk it, so we came to the conclusion he wasn't good. Sorry beilein and 247, you must not know as much as dickhead posters on mgoblog.

Basketball is too weird to predict. Maybe 4 guys transfer. Maybe 3 guys go Pro. JB knows what is up.

I will never question JB recruiting. Inbounding timeouts/plays on the other hand...I kid...kinda.

Why are people going so far to one side on this? I trust Beilein completely with managing the roster but that doesn't mean this decision was a little odd with the given info at the time. Having two centers in the same class with major needs elsewhere is questionable.
