Audio of Desmond's Catch from Moeller's Headset

Submitted by Still in AA on

This came from a Desmond Howard feature at the time of the first UTL game.

"[A]udio compilation of Desmond Howard's famous catch against Notre Dame at Michigan Stadium in 1991, with audio from head coach Gary Moeller on the field, and Brent Musberger and Frank Beckmann from the press box."

This may have been posted before but it's Friday and it's fantastic.

Man...that radio call gave me goose bumps. I just love Michigan so much.

EDIT: The television audio gave me goose bumps, too. Similar to "they left him alone" from the 2011 game when Denard connected with Gallon on the last drive.

That is awesome. Love the real-world picture of the pressures on HCs in critical moments, and how they can have momentary doubts about their decisions.."Should I be kicking a field goal?"

Jerry Hanlon -- Hammer was the offensive right hand to both Bo and Mo.  Great set of coaches with great relationships that went back years and years.  Special people, all of them.

Special memory for me -- I had just graduated the year before, and went back to AA for that game (after having been at the BC game the previous week, when Desmond scored 4 of the team's 5 touchdowns).  I remember sitting with my buddies, middle of student section... we couldn't see the catch, but we could see the crowd in that corner of the endzone going crazy, and we were like -- "he caught it!"

Weird game.  We were rolling ND, then one of the ND linemen broke his leg or something (or maybe it was one of ours), and it completely took all the mojo out of the stadium.  Was like a 10-15 minute pause in the game.  When the game resumed, it was like a different game, ND started coming back.  So when that 4th down play happened, we were only up 3, and the game was very, very much in doubt, despite it feeling like we'd been the better team most of the day.

Made us all feel so good.

Then Amp Lee and FSU came to town... ok that's another story, not so good.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but...

The tone in Moeller's voice was one of true appreciation. It sounded a lot like how I will quietly comment to my wife on something my son does that surprises me. It includes love, being pleasantly surprised, and appreciation that this person is in your life.  It really shows the coach/player connection that we on the outside can't turly appreciate.

I have always loved this play for a variety of obvious reasons, but that audio clip just made it that more special to me.

Was a great representative for the university, had some really successful years, and brought us the 97 Championship.  But I always wonder what could have been with Moeller.

I'll take a crack at it.  Moeller recovers from the drinking incident, keeps his job and leads Michigan to a pair of 2 loss seasons in 95 and 96, both featuring wins over Ohio State.  He would have won the NC in 97 as his recruits would be upperclassmen, which was loaded with future NFL players including Charles Woodson.  His offenses were more explosive than Lloyds early years.  He would have continued at Michigan until his retirement in 2002.  He would have had a strong shot at winning the NC in 2000 also.

By 2002 under this scenario, Lloyd Carr would either be the Defensive Coordinator all of those years under Moeller, or more likely had left long ago for a Head Coaching position at another school.  Either way, by 2002...Carr was 57 and tiring of coaching. It is quite possible that he would be unavailble or no longer desiring the HC position.  So, who takes over for Moeller when he reties in 2002?  Likely candidates would be Cam Cameron and Les Miles.  Brady Hoke would not have the necessary qualifications to be considered at that point.

Sweet memories as I remember that game so well and yes, I really like Coach Mo even though some may not haved liked his drinking!  Also, Greg Skrepenak's name was mentioned on the O-line. He was in my Roman history class and sat in front of me one day.  It was quite difficult to see around that gigantic body of his so I ensured that never happened again.

Still gives chills. That play is the first memory I have of jumping out of my seat and screaming. I was always a sports fan as a kid, but that moment I became a fanatic.

I was at that game with my Dad on about the 20 yard line maybe 20 rows up on that corner of the field.  Totally awesome surpise during a nerve-wracking game.  My dad immediately yelled "There's an All-American!".  Yep.  He did not predict Heisman at that time.

I still remember watching this game on television and Musberger's call of that moment never gets old to me: "Grbac to fire for it....HE WENT FOR IT ALL!". One of the best moments in Michigan-ND history for me anyway.

The Moeller stuff is classic too, as others have mentioned. Always interesting to hear a coach's head basically going a million miles a minute like that.
