any updates on the Tunnel assault?

Submitted by gustave ferbert on November 16th, 2022 at 6:40 PM

I saw Bacon post a sharply worded tweet at the beginning of the week and Balas was saying something was going to be coming down soon.

So far I've seen nothing.

Anyone have any info?

extremely rare in michigan to use a grand jury in a state case.   guessing the washtenaw PA is making sure they have all the videos, all the statements, etc. of the incident before they make a charging decision.  also, it might be more difficult than we think to pick out the bad actors - meaning, it might be easy to pick out two or three, but what if you want to charge 6 or 8?

good question.  the answer is 'no', but practically speaking i would never charge a group of gangsters (and hypothetical thug sparties) in a serial fashion.  i'd issue them all at once, keep them all together, put on the evidence at prelim and trial a single time.  saves time, saves money, saves a ton of unnecessary aggravation.

mostly just TV.  there's a lot more of a story behind my ideas on that and i won't bore you with it, but the bottom line was that, for instance, i would charge everybody in a drive-by shooting, never once gave immunity or a deal to anyone, and get them all at trial.  "win as a team, lose as a team" was my motto.

many offices operate differently than that, but i hated the very idea of using snitches and steadfastly refused to do so.

ah yes, the old saying, "snitches get stitches".

it was hurtful to me and my idea of integrity to entertain the idea that i might put someone up on a witness stand to try and get a conviction, which witness had a substantial share in the murder/death/kill that i'd be prosecuting. seriously, i had an attitude of 'screw them, they're all good for it (read: guilty) and i'm not backing down or having to apologize to some jury about the dirt bag i used to prove a case and gave some form of sweetheart deal'.   again, not every office has that idea and i don't want to cast aspersions at those that do, it was just not something i could stomach.

What I know is that MSU has won 2 games since the assault, and the media (Freep) is praising Tucker for rallying the troops and keeping their bowl hopes alive.

Passed to the police. B1G Conference/Commissioner not going to do anything until that's wrapped up and, to be frank, it's much more likely that nothing will come of it than something. By then MSU is unlikely to do anything more than they have. Time will pass and it'll just kind of go away. That's the way of things. Say what you want but the MSU program, university and fans circle the wagons when they have to and it's effective. It's awful and they're trash but it's effective.

The only place this may stay in the public consciousness at all is the direct lawsuit that players may continue with.

It would be nice to get some kind of statement from the conference especially considering Commissioner Warren's son is a member of the MSU football team, but what more could the Big Ten Conference do at this point? MSU has indefinitely suspended all the players from video pending the outcome of the investigation which at this point is most likely going to end up at least a suspension for the rest of the season given there is only one more week left in the regular season. Maybe they could have booted Khary Crump, but I have my doubts you will see him in a Spartan uniform again.

The best part of this whole post is acting like any member of this Blog would keep any of this to themselves if there was an update (attorney/client privilege or other confidentiality would be exempt). There would be at least five separate threads on this if there were any updates. Then sporadically over the next week, two or three more posts for the guys who always show up late to the party and are pissed that everyone is already drunk.

I wish they would simply provide the facts of the investigation thus far.  I get that they are hoarding what they’ve collected to protect their legal asses, but what about their obligation to the public they serve?  I’m not asking for judgement or indictment, that’s what the judicial system is in place for, but the hard facts they’ve uncovered.  The police and prosecutors don’t own that information, the public does.

I guess I get irritated when I read the newspaper that shall not be named glossing over the incident in favor of praising Mel and that corrupt institution which employs him and enables bad actors.  I would like to know what the facts are to date, and I imagine I am not alone in this.

Um, authorities don't typically provide all the facts of an investigation while the case is pending. Police collect evidence and then hand it to prosecutors, not to the media. Once prosecutors make the call, then the evidence can be revealed. The system works this way for a reason.

Yeah, so, in addition to about the ninety other ways in which this is a bad idea, it's already going to be difficult enough to find an impartial jury in Wastenaw County.  Releasing the results of the investigation would taint most of the jury members who aren't already aware of what happened.

What is this assault you speak of?  Only thing I see on ESPN and local media is talk about a tunnel "incident".  You know, like someone tripped and fell into a wall or something.

Well, I really hope justice is served. Those two UM players deserve it. But, mum is the word from prosecutors and B1G. Hope they don't drag this along to Christmas as we all how much stuff gets done leading up to Christmas and New Year.

I don’t have updates to give, so sorry, but I will say that serious cases invariably enter a “these things take time” stage. I recommend not waiting, and let the next development come to you.
