Amazing aerial shot from Saturday night

Submitted by Bohannon on November 2nd, 2022 at 10:57 AM

A family member shared the following link via Messenger. I'm not associated with this photographer in any way. I attended the game and thought the helicopter flyover was unique and pretty cool (note the aircraft is directly over the M in the photo). I had a hard time as a spectator to gauge if we achieved a significant "Blue Out," but the photo suggests that we did.

Overall, I thought the in-game experience on Saturday was excellent. DJ Truth kept things lively, the band's Dias de Los Muertos medley was timely and enjoyable, and the Mr. Brightside fan light show was looked great.

FWIW, this is definitely during a pom pom moment as the student section was very blue this game. I'd be interested in the same shot at a time where the poms were down.

Saw an article on MLive about it and forgot to post it. Glad you did.

Here is the article:

https://www.mlive.com/life/2022/10/overhead-photo-taken-from-helicopter-shows-rivalry-game-at-michigans-big-house.html

“This rival game shot of MSU vs. U of M has been on my bucket list for quite some time,” Leipprandt said in a recap of the photo shoot he posted online and shared with MLive.

“Four hours before the game, I found out that the Coast Guard was doing the flyover, which is special because I had the opportunity to fly with the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City last week in their MH-60 Jayhawk.

“You have no idea how hard this shot was to align. If you look closely at centerfield, is the Coast Guard’s H-65 helicopter directly inside the block M! I have dreamed of getting this shot, and seconds before I did, I thought I blew the opportunity.

“The wind shifted and pushed the helicopter so the landing skids covered up the middle of the field. At that moment, I made a quick decision to move my camera angle between the helicopter and the skids, held the shutter down and prayed.

”Seconds later, I scrolled through my camera to see what I captured and was ecstatic!!”

This pic is nice.   But, there are a few points I would like to raise / share, if I may.

I am a fan of Maize Outs - especially, at night.  I think it really gives the stadium a "pop", especially, with the pom poms in action.

So, what are my "gripes".

First, have "more than enough" pom poms available so EVERY fan, regardless of where, or when, they enter Michigan Stadium - will get one.   It seemed like the student section had plenty - and, the rest of the stadium was around 25%.   This is a chance to really show off Michigan Stadium, Michigan athletics, the football team, and an engaged fan base - the Athletic Department needs to maximize these opportunities.   And, I would guess - any recruits in attendance would get a "very positive vibe" about the Stadium experience.

Second, the "blue" out - instead of a "maize" out.  Some good comments in the thread - and, it looked pretty good in many sections - but, is challenging to control and enforce.   The Athletic Department should have made a "clear announcement" - it's a "BLUE out" - and, wear blue.   Yes, there were suggestions from the Maize Rage and Student Athletes (football players) -  but, the Athletic Department has to make an announcement - "wear blue"..

Third, though the helicopter flyover was nice, I thought there was an opportunity to recognize an accomplished Michigan alumnus - and, perhaps there are plans to do this in one of the two remaining home games.   The alum to be recognized - James McDivitt - who was an integral part of the NASA program, passed away a few weeks ago.   My suggestion - and, I hope the person responsible for the flyovers reads this - contact the Air Force and arrange for a "Missing Man" flyover to honor Brigadier General, and Michigan alumnus, James Alton McDivitt.

There are plenty of pom poms. You can find them at the gate or in boxes around the stadium. Students are just more inclined to use them.

Maize definitely pops more at night. Blue just looks dark, like the sky. Blue might be better during the day, idk.

The helicopter was cool. Not sure if it was visible on tv, but they did some kind of maneuver that tipped it at like a 45 degree angle toward the field. It also dipped down around midfield, which enabled it to get much closer than the usual jet flyovers. Nice alternative.

The pic is great. Very well done.

pt,

I enter the stadium in the northeast corner - the student entrance.  And, in the two games this season where pom poms were distributed - none were available when I entered the stadium.

So, respectfully, I disagree that they are available.  Now, perhaps I could have gone to the northwest entrance - or a different area, and, they might have had a supply.  So, what should the Athletic Department do?   Perhaps two things - first, order enough pom poms so there would be enough supply, and second, monitor the supply and, if necessary, move a box or two to the areas where the supply is limited or been depleted.

It's not just night that's a problem for a blue out. I was at Michigan for the first Michigan -outs that I'm aware of, and they (logically) tried blue outs for several games, all of which were in the day, and the results were consistently lack-luster. The first time they switched to trying maize, it showed up amazingly, even though it was primarily just the student section that followed through.

I agree.  Unlike the maize out at the PSU game, in which it was obvious that 80%+ of the fans took part, the blue out was much harder to see from the stands.  Apparently it was just meant to set up a gorgeous aerial view. :) Thanks for sharing.

Great picture

The blue out was comme ci comme ca - if we want a blue out, then don't hand out yellow pom poms.  The participation looked good for us but at participation levels below that of our rivals.  It would have been cool if better implemented.

We don't need a DJ.

Holy crap.

That is incredible.

Thanks for the post / insight and thanks to the photog !

While we can all banter about yellow pom poms, blue out, etc -

- - it's great to see ENTHUSIASM at the Big House.

I actually love seeing the student section in "maize" and the smattering of maize & blue in the remainder of the stadium.  To me, it looks awesome.

GO BLUE!

Barely any green! I feel like I remember hearing about a lot more State fan infiltration in the past decade. Anyone care to comment on how the State fan percentage at this game has evolved over the past 10 to 20 years?

As someone who hasn’t attended a game since 2012 I don’t have a good sense of the timeline.

Even though I'm not at all a fan of "artistic angling" of photographs like this, it's a great shot. Rotate it counterclockwise 45 degrees and its frame-worthy.
