ALL the receivers were Senior Honorees

Submitted by 1464 on

Forgive me if I misremembered this, but I had a hefty helping of beer prior to my stadium entry.

Remember last week when we were speculating who the 'extra' senior honorees were?  Why would we honor extra guys?  Were they going somewhere?  Take the jacket off... you're making me nervous.

Well, if my memory serves, Butt, Chesson, AND Darboh were all honored during the Senior celebration.  Does this... indicate anything?  Are we losing our QB and our entire receiver corp?

Everyone who is academically a senior was honored, even if they have athletic eligibility for next year.   Notably on that list: lots of the defensive linemen and the entire WR corps.

They're graduating this year...standard practice. Doesn't say anything about the eligibility. Because technically, they could decide they want to play elsewhere just as much as Harbaugh could decide he doesn't want them.

Butt graduated in 3 years? That's impressive.

Thank you! I've seen multiple people ask this and I just shake my head at my screen. Use context clues people! Hmmm Chesson is being honored, he's not going to be a high draft pick but he's a very productive player. Could it be because he's a senior academically....being honored in a ceremony that honors seniors? Don't these guys play for a school and after this year, won't they have graduated?

Chesson and Darboh are academic senior redshirt juniors. There's no way Harbaugh doesn't offer both of them a 5th year. If you want to look at it the way you are, then Ryan Glasgow, Kyle Kalis, and Chris Wormley were also honored on the field. I don't think it gives any indication of next year

Any RS Jr's were honored for Senior Day.  Chesson and Darboh are both Seniors by class only, not eligibility.  Butt is a true Junior.

He wasn't even a Mackey finalist, he is so underrated. Every road game I've been to his dad has been there. Butt can look ahead at next year to the fact that we only lose like 5 players on offense. I've checked mock drafts and he isn't in the first 3 rounds. I just don't see it.

Are a Gronk (who was a 2nd round pick) or good Jimmy Graham, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to go to the draft early for the TE position.  Usually each draft only has one TE go in the first round, with most picked in the 2nd and 3rd.  I love Butt as an NFL prospect, but I don't see him being that first round talent this year, but maybe next.  Wishful thinking on my part, but I think he comes back.

I don't think Butt will leave. He got snubbed on the Mackey and just got shellacked by OSU, but he sees how much we use him and how good the program will be now. It would really surprise me if he turned down a playoff run, All-American, and 1st round status to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

What about Tyrone Wheatley Jr.? He was getting a lot of hype in the offseason before his injury. If Nauta is that much better than him and Bunting pans out, would it do well to maybe move Wheatley to DE? As I remember, he had a lot of upside there as well and it would do well to add to our depth.

Both Nauta and Butt are "catchy" TEs more than "blocky" ones.

TWJr would fit the "blocky" mold -- 2015 AJ Williams + (or ++) -- well.

There were rumblings of him even possibly going to OT if he stays at 300lbs-ish. While more depth is nice at DE, I don't see M needing it next year. I could see a need post-2016 for an athletic 300#+ OL or DE so TJ has options in addition to TE.

So Nauta will start from day 1?  Over possibly the best TE in the country who is a senior.  Have you lost your mind?  If you are so confident, put your money where your mouth is. Bet me every single MGoPoint you have that Nauta will be a starter the first game of the season next year.

Because you are inferring by your first post that Butt would go pro because we land Nauta.  I still do not think Nauta starts the first game at all, even if they start 2 TEs.

We need all the recievers back. Until this team proves it can impose its will on opposing defenses. The short passing game to Darboh and Butt took place of the run game. Chesson looked like a Wolverine wide receiving legend after he began tracking the deep passes.

With exception to...

  • Blake Bars - passed by Newsome
  • Matt Godin - would be passed by Gary and/or Elliott
  • Tom Strobel - would be passed by Gary
  • Allen Gant - couldn't crack a significant role this year...that said, I wouldn't be shocked if he stayed (re-made the team) and tried to get a starting role with Ross/Bolden/Morgan all gone
  • Terry Richardson - sigh, wish him all the best

Wouldn't be surprised to see one more guy hang it up that no one is expecting.

frankly, I think that is really a harbinger of seniors with another year of eligibility who will not be on the team next year.  There were an awful lot of guys mentioned who did not play much at all the past several years.  If we've seen anything, it's that we have a talent gap to overcome right now.  Harbaugh needs 27/28 in this class and then another next year with at least 23/24.

Wait a minute, Chesson & Amara still have eligibility left??? Why is this news to me? I do remember Amara getting missing most of a season earlier in his career, but I thought he played in too many games that year...

Let the seniors that won't be offered a 5th year have their day without the stigma of it indicating that their scholarship is not being extended.

Why not celebrate four years in the program?
