All 4 FBS teams in MI going to bowl games

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

With CMU's win over Ohio U yesterday, they're headed to a bowl game.

This is the first time ever all 3 MAC teams from MI will go to a bowl game in the same season with the green and white becoming bowl eligible last week when they won a conference road game at Ball State.

#3 Michigan (9-1)

#21 WMU (10-0)

EMU (6-4)

CMU (6-5)

There are 40 bowl games, that means 80 teams will make a bowl. There's a new NCAA rule that bowls can't select 5-7 teams until all 6-6 teams or better are invited. There are 59 bowl eligible teams already, with 19 teams a win away from bowl eligibilty with 2 weeks to play. There are only 12 teams that are mathmatically eliminated from bowls IE 8 or more losses.

That means there are still 116 teams fighting for 80 spots, with 59 teams already qualified. If you look at teams that are not already bowl eligible, that's 57 teams for 21 spots. There are 19 teams with 7 losses already so they're out unless there arent enough teams. EMU and CMU are guaranteed a spot over them.

That means there are 38 teams with a chance at a bowl for 21 spots left. 19 teams only need one win, which means they're 5-5, or 6-5 in Army's case. Let's say 12 of these teams win one more game. That's 19 teams for 9 more spots, and at least 10 would need to win out to even think about pushing out EMU or CMU

EMU game tonight and cheering on the Fightin' Emus on their homecoming after becoming bowl eligible. Should be a fun atmosphere, and plenty of leg room! And you can't beat $15 tickets.

2016 has been rough for Sparty. Maybe that radio host was right, Izzo and Mork have been spending too much time eating pasta together instead of coaching.

Although I look forward to his retirement job. Rigatoni with Mike Dantoni weeknights at 5 on BTN

And in Division II, Grand Valley State and Ferris State are in the playoffs. Throw in MSU's disaster of a season and it's been a very successful year for college football in the state of Michigan.

The best part about this week is that, just as MSU develops amnesia about their football program and try to pivot to their basketball team, their B-Ball team starts the season at 0-2. Granted, they lost to two solid teams, but it's good to see them athletically homeless for a time. The brightest spot on their sports calendar right now is the Lions.

I know msu has been a dumpsters fire (ok couch fire) this year but we need to pull for them to be at least decent moving forward! Their issues are hurting us in many ways especially sos.

Some of their losses are bad, but losses to teams we play against have zero effect on our SOS by percentage and at this point help us by boosting other teams. When they rolled over for Wisconsin, that helped Wisconsin become a quality top ten team that's a big part of our resume. Same principle applies when they are kobayashi maru'd by PSU.

Seriously, we just lost and we didn't drop a single spot in the playoff race. If we beat OSU and win the B1G title game (I am not super confident about either but the opportunity is there) nothing else matters at all.

How bout no, Scott?

OSU didn't need anyone in the Big Ten to be any good when they won the national title two years ago. The conference was MUCH weaker then than it is now. If you win out as a Power 5 team, you're in. Doesn't matter how bad your conference is.

I'd be okay with watching MSU return to the gutter for the next 3-4 decades.

His point is dumb, but to be perfectly honest, Sparty winning out would only benefit Michigan. If Michigan State beats Ohio State and Penn State to close the year and Michigan beats Indiana, it would guarantee Michigan would go to the B1G Championship Game. If Michigan wins they are 8-1 in conference and above the 7-2 Penn State and 6-3 Ohio State teams. If Michigan loses to Ohio State, all 3 teams would be 7-2. Tiebreaker goes as follows:

1. Record against the other 2 tied teams (Everybody would be 1-1 against each other)

2. Record in division (Michigan would be 5-1, PSU and OSU would be 4-2).
