76ers claim GR III off waivers. He may get some playing time there so hopefully he makes the best of it.

Excited to be in Philly, blessed to have this opportunity! #OverlyDedicated

I was hoping this would happen! Hinkie loves him some raw, rangy forwards. GRIII will definitely get playing time in Philly. And Brett Brown is excellent at player development.

Great landing spot for him.  The Sixers will definitely give him PT and he'll get a chance to show the league what he's got.  He wasnt getting on the floor in Minnesota so getting waived might be a blessing in disguise.

I was pretty sour on his prospects in the last thread about him, but I may have been engaging in excessive pessimism coupled with vague ignorance. T-Wolves coach Flip Saunders spoke about the move on his weekly radio appearance (which he keeps whether he's associated with the Wolves or not) and, in addition to the boilerplate platitudes about how GRIII would be a good pro, made a good point about his fit in Minnesota: He has basically the same body type and role of not only Andrew Wiggins but also Shabazz Muhammad, both guys Minnesota is working hard to develop. There simply aren't minutes for him. Wiggins was, of course, not on the roster when GRIII was drafted, so he made more sense for them then. Now, behind two young top 10-type guys, his inability to get minutes makes sense without meaning he can't cut it. In Philly he'll have the opposite issue--the only way they won't give him floor time is if he is so good that he threatens to win games for them.

Playing out of position hurt him, and he played out of position in large part due to McGary's injury.  Once Mitch was suspended for this year, Robinson knew it would be the same problem all over again, except worse with Morgan and Horford also departing, and so he went pro.  If McGary came back for year 3, I think there's a better-than-even chance Robinson would have as well.

I can't recall.

I sort of see what you're saying, but there is no out of position on offense and I'm not sure how a 5 impacts what Glenn would have had to do, as Coach B rarely plays two bigs at once, anyway.

But there was certainly both potential downside and upside to him coming back.

I also think once he made the decision to come back (and if Mitch hadn't gotten hurt, that could have been a NC team) that's in the past.

It's irrelevant to the decision of what was his best move as a Sophomore likely to both get drafted in the second round and be less than ready for the NBA (which as I've stated before is not a good combination). If you're not ready to be a factor at the NBA level, it's very important to be a first round pick.

Not sure why this is getting negged.  If you disagree, feel free to refute me.  But there are only 19 games left this season, Robert Covington is pretty solid, JaKarr Sampson gets a lot of PT and even Jerami Grant is probably better than GRIII (or at least as good, and they'll have to fight for 2nd/3rd string minutes.  I would play Jerami Grant over GRIII, he has done a whole lot better in limited minutes this year from an efficiency standpoint than GRIII has.

I'm not saying he won't get in a game ever, just that he probably logs less than 50-60 minutes of PT over the rest of the season.

A) GR3 is a better prospect than the guys they have

B) Put down the hateraide and go to bed

GR3 was drafted and offered a 4 year deal while Covington went undrafted.  GR3 is more than 3 years younger than Covington. His ceiling is far higher.  Sixers are all about finding studs guys who can help them win a title.  GR3 is more likely to do that than Covington.

Jerami Grant is pretty analogous to GR3, actually.  They are similar prospects in many ways similar ages similar strong bloodlines, etc.  He's getting about 20 mpg. GR3 should get the same if he can acclimate to their coaching and scheme.  He'll probably play a bit even if he can't.

Sampson is another guy that is similar to GR3 (athletic wing with unrefined skillset), but was undrafted.

GR3 may not play ahead of those guys right away but was objectively a better prospect before the season and nothing especially significant has happened to change that over the season to change that.

The sixers will want to see what they have.  They took on his guaranteed contract for a reason.

I would bet GR3 gets closer to 300 minutes than 50.

I think when you claim someone off waivers, you take on their existing contract. I think a player has to clear waivers before he becomes a free agent and eligible to sign a new contract.

"Liberty Bells" gives a few words to this naturally - LINK

What's most notable about Robinson is his contract, as he opted to take the "K.J. McDaniels Special", a one-year, minimum salary pact. Unlike McDaniels, the gamble really hasn't paid off for Robinson, but being in Philadelphia should finally give him some consistent minutes to make up for lost time.

Hopefully, he'll get some consistent floor time.

You know in our rush to congradulate GRIII for the signing one thing I think we've all overlooked is playing time.  I think he'll get it but it appears the rest of you havent really given that aspect of his new role much thought.

As a native of Philadelphia and a fan of all their sports teams I can say this.

If GR3 can't make it in the NBA, I guess the 76ers is an adequate fall-back option.

Robert Covington has been playing well for Philly. But he should more playing time than he got in Minnesota. With Wiggins, Shabazz Muhammad, Kevin Martin, Zach Lavine, etc. on the wings in Minnesota, he wasn't going to see any real time anytime soon.

He'll definitely get an opportunity to show what he's got. Philly has been a joke for obvious reasons the past few years, but some guys off of the past few squads have gotten paid a decent amount by showcasing their skills, even if it was for a bad team.

The bad thing is Philadelphia franchise has no clue what it is doing.   They don't seem to invest long term in much of anything, so GR3 might be looking for a new team again once the season ends - whether he plays good or not.

There is an interesting article somewhere that I read describing their long-term plan. I can't find it right now but I will look for it later. But it was a really long-term plan that had a lot of risk to it. One of the things I remember is they are looking for players with long wingspans and good physical characteristcs because they think they can teach them to shoot better.
