2022 Big Ten Recruiting- A Top 6 Ranking for each position group

Submitted by tragictones on January 28th, 2022 at 10:06 AM

The below rankings are based on 247 composite rankings.

Recruiting sites make it easy to compare recruits.  For instance, you can easily find out where a recruit stacks up nationally by looking at the Top 247, the Rivals250, or the ESPN 300.  Or, you can find out where a recruit stacks up relative to others at the same position by looking at the 247 position rankings.  State rankings reveal how recruits stack up relative to other recruits from their home state.  You can find out how a recruit stacks up relative to their future teammates by looking a school’s commitment list.

But, it takes time to find out how a recruit stacks up relative to their future opponents.  I want to know if Michigan is bringing in some of the Big Ten’s best at each position.  So, I put together a list of position rankings for Big Ten 2022 recruits.  ESPN, Rivals, and 247 have all announced that they have updated their rankings for the last time this cycle (post All-star games.)  Since these rankings are final, and very, very few players who could impact the below lists remain unsigned (Josh Conerly, etc.), this seems like the time for a Big Ten recruit summary.

Observations:

  • Clear East/West talent divide.
  • 3 tiers in the Big Ten East:
    • Tier 1: Ohio State
    • Tier 2: Michigan and Penn State
    • Tier 3: the rest
  • Penn State has the highest ranked player at all 4 offensive skill positions (QB, RB, WR, TE)
  • Notre Dame has a lot of high-end talent in this class.  If in the Big Ten, they would have 15 players ranked in the top 6 of their position group.  They have 3 blue-chip Offensive Tackles.
  • Ohio State has the most “in the trenches” talent in this year’s class. (3 Offensive Linemen in the top 12; 4 Defensive Linemen/Edge in the top 12)
  • Michigan is unfortunately not well represented in the trenches (0 Offensive Linemen in the top 12; 1 Defensive Linemen/Edge in the top 12)
  • Only Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State are represented on the receivers list.  If you were to expand that list to 10 players, those three schools would account for 8 of the top ten with one Maryland (Shaleak Knotts) and one Michigan State (Germie Bernard) recruit cracking the list.
  • The only Michigan 4* player who did not rank in the top 6 of their position group in the Big Ten: Mason Graham, who is the 8th highest DL recruit, behind Purdue’s Joe Strickland (7th).
  • If Michigan were to add Josh Conerly (and all else remains the same), they would remain 8th in the national class rankings, just a hair behind Notre Dame’s class.
  • The largest “gaps” in overall ranking between players 1 and 2 on these lists is Will Johnson and Jyaire Brown (14 overall vs. 198 overall), Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen (30 overall and 152 overall),
  • Wisconsin only has 1 player in the top 6 of their position group (an Offensive Tackle, of course)
  • 5 * Players in the Big Ten: CJ Hicks (Ohio State), Sonny Styles (Ohio State), Will Johnson (Michigan), Dani Dennis-Sutton (Penn State), Nicholas Singleton (Penn State), Drew Allar (Penn State)
  • On3 published a story (non-paywalled) about recruits that On3 ranks high above the industry average. These “On3 Outliers” include several Big Ten players:  Brady Allen (Purdue QB), Jimmy Rolder (Michigan LB), Kenneth Grant (Michigan DL), and Abdul Carter (Penn State LB).

i thought we had the #1 kicker in the country from Huron HS or something? Or is that 2023?

I'll also add that I've noticed a shift in recruiting. The names on the osu and Notre Dame boards (commits) arent even guys that we go after. Some, of course (e.g. Burnham), but.. for the most part I've never heard of the majority of these guys. Surprised to see that since years ago it was always a battle with those two schools.

I see us in battles with msu and psu a lot more now. Wonder if that's a shift in recruiting prowess or a shift in philosophy or just style of play?

Well done post. It looks somewhat grim. Michigan doesn't appear to be narrowing any talent gap. If Frames learns how to coach we could be screwed. MSU is recruiting better than they have in a while, and combined with Tucker's portal acumen, that means 4 highly talented team in the B1G East for the foreseeable future.

Its possible those QB rankings benefit Michigan if Dante Moore plans to play in the Big Ten/ND.  UofM, OSU, PSU and MSU are in his top group and Michigan will have the largest eligibility gap for 4/5 star QB.

Getting a 5* QB early in the cycle shows leadership and sets the tone for the class.  Here is to hoping Dante steps up and wants to play that role at Michigan.

This race could be a roller coaster ride.

This is only the second time Franklin has out recruited Harbaugh and Michigan. Franklin has done about the same as Harbaugh with slightly less talent.

I don't think Franklin is a great in game coach but the conversation on him is over the top. If you don't think he has accomplished much given the talent available to him and don't think much of him as a coach because of it that should be your opinion of Harbaugh too.

Thanks for putting this together. Very informative.

Penn State is cleaning up at the skill positions, but until they get their OL problems solved I'm not sure they'll be able to do much with this talent.

With NLI and transfer portals, I'll be curious how many of those guys are still at these schools in two years and how many 4-5* kids that are already there will hit the portal because of them.

This should have been a diary for longevity sake. It deserves to be seen longer than it likely will.

The offensive recruiting for Penn State is worrisome, as is their JUCO grabs.  Ohio State seems to have their usual haul.  I would have loved to see more "big hosses" for Michigan on both sides of the ball.  I was going to say that there should be more than 3 tiers and that MSU should be tier 3 by themselves, but the numbers seem to say otherwise.

Nice compilation - thanks!

For Penn State, another really good class of position players and skilled defensive players, ruined entirely by their complete lack of offensive line talent and coaching. So glad we moved past that era of Michigan football while Penn State continues to wallow in it

Considering Andrew Gentry as a part of this class, his 2020 rating of 0.9628 would put him at number two on the list of OTs, so that makes things look a little better in the trenches

Was thinking the same thing. Also, if Josh Connerly comes to Michigan, he would be the number 1 on the list of OT's, so that would give us number 1 & 2 at OL. I want to continue to see great linemen come in, both on offense and defense . . . that made a huge difference in both the OSU game and the Georgia game. Improve at the line, and we'll do very well.

Where the 5*'s landed:

Of note, the B1G conference (collectively) is tied with TAMU for the most 5* recruits in this class with 6. Sigh.

SEC - 15  (TAMU 6, Georgia 5, Bama 4)

B1G - 6 (Penn St 3, OSU 2, UM 1)

ACC - 4 (Clemson 2, UNC 2)

BIG 12 - 1 (Texas 1)

PAC 12 - 1 (USC 1)

IND. - 1 (Notre Dame 1)

SWAC - 1 (Jackson St - #1 overall, plus a high 4 star)

Blue@LSU

That's just crazy the amount of talent that 3 teams are stockpiling. The SEC really is getting more and more top-heavy every year.

I can't believe that none of the Florida schools could keep their 5*s at home. There are four 5*s from the state (6 if you include IMG), and none of them committed to a Florida school.

The number of 5 stars can be misleading. The Composites' average / recruit is more telling as many schools have several high 4 stars just are just outside the 5-star grouping.

If you look at the Composite 247, many teams - including Bama, A&M, and Georgia - all have between 24 and 27 commitments.  If you look just inside the B1G, PSU has three 5-stars to OSU's two but OSU has the better overall class by a pretty good margin.

The average / recruit ratings between 90 - 92 is really good while the Ratings between 93 - 95 is outstanding, And keep in mind, the transfer portal is now a 2nd means of recruiting which will add to their figures. I'd much rather have a proven CF player through the portal than some unproven HS players.

Well done list, thank you. But it's still bad that Michigan is only a tier 2 School, hopefully recruiting picks up tremendously in the future

This post has been repeated a couple times and it is worth repeating that this is Franklin's best class at PSU and I think only the second time he has had a higher ranked recruiting class than Harbaugh. Michigan has consistently had more talent overall than PSU over the last 7 years and has basically the same overall success. Every time people are shitting on Franklin in this thread it is really just a different way of saying you apparently don't think of Harbaugh as much of a coach since he accomplishes about the same amount with more talent.

January 28th, 2022 at 11:24 PM ^

While I understand your point AK, I'm gonna push back a bit on the idea they've had the same level of success. Michigan under Harbaugh has been better than PSU under Franklin.

Franklin at PSU vs. Harbaugh at Michigan:

Overall records:

JF/PSU 67-34, 66%. JH/MI 61-24, 72%

Conference records:

JF/PSU 42-28, 60%. JH/MI 43-17, 72%

Rivalry records:

Franklin is 3-5 vs. both Michigan and MSU, 1-7 vs. OSU. 29%

Harbaugh is 4-3 vs. PSU, 3-4 vs. MSU, 1-6 vs. OSU. 38%

So, by all reasonable measures, Harbaugh has been significantly more successful at Michigan than Franklin has at PSU.

Harbaugh basically wins one more game per year than Franklin, that extra win is typically in conference - often against a rival.

Until this year JH couldn't beat OSU, and he's .500 vs. PSU/MSU. Franklin can't beat any of his rivals.

Not to knock the effort, but this is an extremely tenuous way to look at recruiting.

The "rankings" are a low probability effort in the first place and chances that they have ranked positions correctly are even lower.

Plus there is no context to predict who might actually perform better.

For example, the WR "rankings";

OSU may have two "higher" ranked guys now, but Tyler Morris was a 5star when first ranked, and well within the top100, before he got hurt and others passed him by since he didn't play. Plus he played with JJ before JJ went to IMG, so they have a connection already.

Add to that Clemons who is a 6'3" beast with speed and UofM added two complementary receivers who have clear opportunities for early playtime, whereas OSU's are both in the same mold, under 6foot speedsters plus they are trying to find reps behind 6 other top 100wrs.

I'd predict now that Morris has a better career than those two, and that is even if our passing game never rivals theirs, off the fact he probably will be a number one receiver during his UofM career, the other two maybe not.

Also with the DL, while only Morris is "ranked" in the top 6, Kenneth Grant may easily be the most important DL addition in the B1G. As we saw on New year's eve, 340+lb DTs with athleticism are a big deal.

Best part is the majority of UofM's '22 class is a perfect FIT.

Nobody is arguing that the players on these lists will definitely have better careers than those who do not, or that the vagaries of recruiting rankings are taken into account, or that the players "fit" one school's culture and system better than another's. But it is a fairly objective way to view "talent" that has been recruited to the respective schools. We do know that there is a correlation between performance and highly-ranked talent, so this comparison makes sense.
