2019 4* S Marvin Grant commits to Purdue - HOW???

Submitted by boliver46 on

While busy trying to gain Karma for the CFB Risk War, I came across this:

Link

From this, I have ALL the questions:

  1. Why would a 4-star Safety out of Detroit sign with Purdue?
  2. Was UM not heavily involved?
  3. His Crystal Ballz were heavily for Kentucky...Why?

And further - this link shows that Purdue now has 3 4-Stars in the 2019 class.

They only had ONE (!!) in the 2018 class.

What kind of Snake Oil is Brohm pushing?

I look to my Supreme Recruiting Overlords to help me understand this...

Current Feels:

that guy on staff that we tried to hire as a TE coach 2 years ago is one heck of a recruiter. Lots of kids in the region that are B1G caliber have Kentucky high on their lists.

Sure they lose a decent number when/if the bigger dogs from the B1G/ACC/SEC come calling but he is making it harder for the Purdue/IU/Illinois/Minnesotas of the world and even occasionally MSU or UM.

Plus the dude's offer list screams 3* or 3*/4* tweener. Coaches don't seem to think he's the 264th best player in the country like 247 does

247 doesn’t think he’s the 264th best player. The composite rankings do. 247 ranks him 436th. Over 100 spots away from 4* territory. The composite is a combination of all three major sites rankings. ESPN is terrible and Rivals hasn’t changed theirs in a while. This is what happens when the sites are lazy and this is why more and more people are joining the “recruiting rankings don’t matter” crowd. They’re just so flawed now that you have to do more digging when something happens where the offers/commit don’t match his ranking. Look at Grant’s ranking and offers, then go look at Jack Stewart’s ranking and offers. Something doesn’t seem off there?

Sometimes. Obviously when you see a kid like Grant commit to Purdue over Michigan and ND offers, you can make the safe assumption that the latter were not committable offers. If you can find one or two offers that don’t fit with the rest, that’s a safe assumption. That’s why you look at the whole trend. A kid isn’t going to have 12 P5 offers and none of them be committable offers.

Nope. I hear Marvin Grant is a Star Wars prequell fan, that he is an avid defender of Episodes 1,2 and 3. Both the Staff at UM and MSU hate all three prequells. In addition, The MSU coaches also believe ROTJ is a bullshit movie because of both the Ewoks, and also because they feel Luke should have turned Dark. Given these disagreements, it makes sense Grant would sign with a coaching staff more alligned with his views.

As red dog said, Michigan and MSU didn’t want him. He already dropped way down in the 247 rankings and will on other sites eventually as well. When the major local schools don’t want a “4 Star” MLK kid, there’s some “there” there.

Lol that dude is a psychopath. Hey if it’s not behavioral/criminal, and the big time programs just didn’t think he was a big time program prospect, then good for Grant for getting a P5 scholarship to a decent school. Not everyone is a Michigan kid, he can still have a good career and college experience.

It's likely no more than he developed early and then didn't keep developing as his classmates caught up.  Michigan was after him at one point but they dropped off as they saw more of his classmates and started to pursue guys like Daxton Hill and Lewis Cine.  Plus they took a bunch of CB/S types last class so they can be picky.   His offers from Michigan and ND are likely not committable.

For anyone interested, the 247sports targets page for Michigan is kept pretty up to date by Steve L and those listed as top targets are guys who the staff really wants and thinks they have a good shot with(in the top 3-5).  Those under high choice are guys Michigan would like but aren't likely to get.  Below that are guys Michigan isn't really recruiting or are watching but haven't offered yet.  I don't think it's paywalled and it gives a nice snapshot for those who don't follow recruiting closely.

Because he didn’t have actual interest from the high level Midwest powers, so you’re left with the Purdues, Kentucky’s of the world.

Also rankings are getting worse and worse as a guide for any individual player as there’s really only 2 services now that put out a ranking. Obviously on the whole higher ranking the better but for any individual player I wouldn’t sweat the ranking difference between a low 4/ higher 3 star

We backed off on the kid a looonnggg time ago. Brohm is a great recruiter and he has a selling point with Purdue, that program is definitely on the ups.

Maybe...idk... because recruiting rankings don’t actually matter and coaching staffs have their own recruiting boards and their own reasons for going after players while ignoring others. Michigan offered, backed off. MSU never offered. ND offered and backed off. OSU never offered. I’ve always maintained that the coaching staffs know a whole lot more than these recruiting sites. His offer list and his interest list backs that up.

Its not just running backs. Look at Big Will. Look at Ondre Pipkins. Look at Boubacar Cissoko. Sure, the argument can be made that generally a five star has a better chance at succeeding than a four star and a four star has a better shot than a three star and so on. But we aren’t speaking generally, we’re speaking about an individual recruit. With his own set of strengths and weaknesses, his own personality, his own set of factors that will ultimately determine his level of success. I’d like to think that coaching staffs have a better eye for talent and the personality of the kids and can gauge those abilities better than someone who only sees these kids in a camp setting.

They are ever hopeful, as evidenced by this Purdue fan's reply to a Penn State fan:

We start playing you again in a couple years....we could be kinda good by then!

If I were Michigan! Minny is getting better and better recruits and they are gonna be sneaky good real soon. He already had 2 lineman from IMG commit. I’m more worried about them then Purdue as Minny reminds me of a Harbaugh program from years past!

........someone told me, Harbaugh worked a "Vegas Golden Nights-esque" deal and now..... UofM's getting Karlaftis.

As part of the deal, Mott is also gonna send an Xray machine, defib, and one of those cool tents you sit in when feeling woozy. (Actually wish this part true.)
