2016 OT Alaric Jackson (Detroit Renaissance) is on the board now

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

2016 OL Alaric Jackson out of Detroit was set to decide today, but posted on Twitter that his announcement is going to be delayed until NSD "due to some difficulties". Coincidentally (not really), he also started following Tim Drevno on Twitter today. Has offers from MSU, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska. Big, athletic dude who is super raw. Has only been playing a few years, but has high upside.

Allen Trieu said on Scout he thinks something is going on with Michigan here. Wolverine Devotee's Twitter follow theory may yet again be vindicated (until Jordan Fuller's announcement tonight).

Given that he hasn't been the subject of much discussion on this board, I wouldn't think he'd be the one that anyone would expect to fry the servers, but you never know.

I do not want to start anything, but something in my Facebook feed said something to the effect that Onwenu removed "Michigan commit" from his Twitter profile.   I didn't click it.  I came to MGoBlog instead, but haven't seen it here, so I hope to goodness its not true.  I can usually find the accurate M news here, so I'm glad this hasn't turned up yet.

Don't want to start another topic so since this is OL related I keep seeing people mention stuff about Onwenu seemingly ready to flip?  Are there any real legs to the rumor?  Him dropping Michigan commit from his twitter would seem like a really bad sign but since I've never been on his twitter I can't tell.

I also didn't want to start a new thread, but TomVH put out an article saying that Rashan Gary is 50/50 between two schools. His mother is quoted as saying that he sat down with his family, but couldn't decide. I don't know if this is just smoke or what, but hey, don't shoot the messenger. And as people will point out, he's been liking M for a long time, so other schools would have to do some catching up to get him on board. Plus we have his friends from Jersey etc etc . . .

He was a guy that seemed like an MSU lean for a while until MSU hit on a few surer OL prospects and then seemed to drop out for them. But he has a really high upside as an athlete, but is just really, really raw as a player. Will take at least a few years to get there, but it would be a nice project to pick up at this stage as a true OT prospect.

With such a large class and deficit of OTs in pipeline worth it to spend one on a boom bust guy.  Delance was much higher ranked but again was a guy you were going to have on the bench for 2 years to develop just the same.

Im confident Drevno is more along the lines of Iowa and Wisconsin in developing OL vs being Funky which would doom a guy like this.

Position of great need. All signs (Lorenz, Drevno, announcement delay) point to an offer and probable last minute commit. A 2 year project with mutli-sport background is a win for the staff and this year's o-line class. Go Blue, young man!

I have sources from Detroit telling me this kid is Michigan bound, will sign to the good guys on NSD. Also, Onwenu is still weighing his options, but should end up Blue.

Was Owenu really waiting 2 years for an MSU offer? It is very weird that all of a sudden MSU offers after not for the longest time and he is struggling with his decision?

Maybe I am just a bitter person, but if I wanted to go to MSU and they kept balking at offering (and I was very highly rated), I'd say thanks but no thanks.

Detnews did a rundown of the top 25 prospects daily for past few weeks and Onwenu's was a few days ago and in it he was quoted as saying the Weaver / Swenson situations made him want to keep his options open.

I know this is where I get the downvotes because what happens to other players can never affect the thinking of any of our commits but this was his quote.

But Onwenu is keeping his options open since Jim Harbaugh has told other committed recruits, such as Florida defensive end Rashad Weaver, that there might not be room for them, after all, on Michigan’s roster.

“They haven’t said anything like that to me (that his scholarship was in jeopardy), but things happen and that’s in the back of my mind, the reason I’m taking visits,” Onwenu told The Detroit News on Tuesday.  In addition to the Weaver case, Onwenu said he’s also followed the situation regarding Illinois offensive lineman Erik Swenson, who had been committed to Michigan since 2013 but last week said Harbaugh pulled his scholarship offer.

This is great news.

UM has been NEEDING to re-open that Detroit pipeline for what feels like almost an entire decade by now.

I'm happy Harbaugh can recruit nationally, we'll certainly need it going forward, but Southeast Michigan, Detroit, and Ohio are hotbeds for talent, and we've missed out on a lot of great players in our own backyard.

Almost all recent BCS/NC teams have proven that you have to recruit well in your own state.

Mentioned this possibility last week, it just seems like a low risk how reward option. Especially with the strong chance of getting Isaiah Wilson and or Tedarrell Slaton next year

He's actually a pretty good prospect at #629. I figured when I saw the title that if we're taking a first shot at a local OT this late in the game that we'd be out in the thousands somewhere but this seems like it'd be a solid pick-up

Not sure why. It sounds like Swenson wasn't willing to be evaluated by the coaches in person. He may or may not end up being a great player at OU, but If the kid wasn't willing to prove the coaches wrong (as some insiders had suggested), he doesn't seem like a recruit Harbaugh would want on the team anyways. Not denigrating the kid. Hope he does well at OU. I just think Harbaugh probably expects all of his guys to be willing to fight and scrap at everything they do
