2016 OT Alaric Jackson (Detroit Renaissance) is on the board now

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

2016 OL Alaric Jackson out of Detroit was set to decide today, but posted on Twitter that his announcement is going to be delayed until NSD "due to some difficulties". Coincidentally (not really), he also started following Tim Drevno on Twitter today. Has offers from MSU, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska. Big, athletic dude who is super raw. Has only been playing a few years, but has high upside.

Allen Trieu said on Scout he thinks something is going on with Michigan here. Wolverine Devotee's Twitter follow theory may yet again be vindicated (until Jordan Fuller's announcement tonight).

The Glasgows were the same way.  Didn't play football until the last year or two of HS.  I can take an OT like that.  Especially a basketball player from Detroit.

Any truth to the rumors that Wheatley Jr has put on weight and is 6'7 280-290? That would be insane with his athleticism. Heard some rumors of it. Anyone? If so, that would be a great possibility for an OT

I think we close out the class with 5 pretty sure recruits...

R Gary
A Jackson
V Viramontes
L Hiil
Q Nordin

The last spot is a little more in flux.

I Simmons/C Murphy (the 2 most likely candidates).

Was he even being recruited by Michigan before today? It doesn't appear that he had a scholarship offer from Michigan before today?

Looks like he had offers from Iowa, Michigan State, Nebraska, Purdue, Rutgers, Illinois and Iowa State, plus some other lower-rated schools, and that he'd narrowed his choices to Iowa, Iowa State and Nebraska.

If (a) because Erik Swenson and Devery Hamilton are headed elsewhere, (b) there are no other realistic offensive line options available for the class of 2016, and (c) the plan is to get him ready for Big Ten football not later than the fall of 2019, so that he could play as a redshirt junior during his fourth year at Michigan, then it seems like it's worth the risk to take an experienced basketball player with his size, and hope that he'll be able to develop at least as well as Graham and Ryan Glasgow have.

It also can't hurt to add another Michigan player to this recruiting class, so that Detroit high school football coaches and players will know that Michigan remains a viable option for them, and that Michigan will continue to compete with Ohio State and Michigan State for local talent.

Let's Hope So!
Would not like see a guy that wants to come back for a 5th year not able to do so because of this type of late addition. Prefer that we wait on 2017 instead of a 2016 that all agree needs to be developed for least 2 years. Seems like we should not take a guy late who was never offered, after giving out close to 200 offers.

of a likely 5th year contributor other than those who saw plenty of p.t. last season. I would agree with you on the face of it, but if an offer was, indeed, made I can't see JH approving an offer for a kid that will require this much seasoning in favor of a likely contributor for the upcoming season.

Only reason I can image an offer like this going out at this point in the cycle is if the kid's upside is so great that to not offer would be negligent on our part. But, staying with your reasoning, it seems if there was a kid in our own backyard who really was worth the chance we would have to have been made aware of him and targeted him quite some time ago.

I guess the logic will be learned later and Drevno could be acting on instructions from the boss to get us a legitimate candidate or two, but that would seem to follow along the lines of desperation, and I don't think we will be going there.

It will be nice when we get to the point that we have enough on ice to take a chance on a couple instater's, figuring at the worst they would be legit backups.

when it works in Michigan's favor.  The young man looks like he has a high ceiling and lists remarkable speed for his size (4.9 40yd.  If Coaches Harbaugh and Drevno want him, I want him and think he would be a good get at a  positon of need.
