#1 Rated player out of HS, Rhodes Scholar, NFL Misfit Myron Rolle speaks at hearing regarding paying players

Submitted by denardogasm on

Just a little object of interest on a slow afternoon for the board.

This is a short opening statement by Myron Rolle about the problem of NCAA athletes essentially being used by the universities and graduating with useless degrees.  He doesn't really say anything super enlightening, but it really makes you wonder at how one guy can graduate college sounding like this and another can graduate saying things like "We ain't come to play school."  While listening to his statement I found myself first thinking, "I wish more athletes sounded like this,"  then addended my thought to, "I wish more PEOPLE sounded like this."  I'm not one to rave about people's intelligence/abilities/accomplishments, but this guy is a boss.

I really hope he took a harder line during the rest of the hearing, because here he seems to be sugarcoating it by saying we "have a bit further to go" in terms of educating athletes.  Yeah, a bit.

I knew a lot about Myron Rolle before this, but hearing him speak - holy shit is he impressive.

It would be interesting to talk to him about how he feels about all of this.  On one hand, he would be an argument for why college athletes can be successful academically because he did great things playing the most demanding sport, excelling at said sport, and doing it at a school not known for being academically elite (e.g. he wasn't at Stanford or Duke).  On the other hand, he has clearly seen other athletes who achieved a whole lot less than he did.  So I wonder how much of that blame he puts on the system and how much he puts on the players who didn't utilize their education as much as he did.

My grandma sent me this the other day: 1914 - Greek & Latin were taught to high schoolers. 2014 - Remedial English is taught to 60% of incoming college freshman

I teach first-year composition at a small university at which half of our incoming students are the first-generation in their family to attend college, so I ran our numbers. I hate to disagree with your grandmother, but where I teach traditionally 12% of our first-year students take remedial English.

Sorry - I submitted before I was ready. There is also another problem with that statement - 1914 is pre-GI bill, and the percentage of Americans going to college was much smaller, representing an income level much higher than we have now.

[Fart] 1914: High school science classes teach kids Bohr's one-year-old model of the atom. (Maybe. Chances are no textbooks contain Bohr's cutting edge theories). 2014: High school kids use touch-screen cellular telephones to connect to wireless signals that allow near instantaneous communication through some magic called the internet to learn as much as they want about quantum mechanics. If a discovery is made, the kids know within minutes. People were really smart in 1914. So smart that their life expectancy was 52 years. Our idiots are expected to live til upwards of 75. Society has gotten so stupid!

I was being incredibly sarcastic.  Like so sarcastic I couldn't verbally form the words because I cannot possibly put the necessary amount of sarcasm into the inflection of my voice.

That's what i get for not including the fucking "/s" tag though. (which in my opinion just sucks, and makes every sarcastic comment it is included on sound stupid)

Interestingly enough, I actually had some last night.  They sold it in the market here, so I made a sandwich.  It was pretty good.

As for ribs, damn you for mentioning those... But I only have a few days left in Ghana, so I'm not focusing on that too much and just making the most out of my time here.  Then back stateside on sunday (just in time to miss my chance to go to the ManU-RM game. dammit).

oh god so much sarcasm.

but i also deeply hate the "/s", so i avoid doing it when i can.

I just figured that comment was so dripping with sarcasm that considering the context it'd be impossible for a reader to not pick up on that.  I was clearly wrong.

I mean, yeah, if that one can't get picked up given this thread, then I think that there is no hope for sarcastic comments on the internet.  Unless it's in a specific font...

From now on, this is my sarcasm font:

[testing...testing] Really fantastic font a2_eb.
This wll definitely work well in any thread
where you don't specify that this is your sarcasm font.

In all fairness to the young man who made the "play school" quote, he hasn't graduated yet. I'm sure he will sound more educated when he is done playing school.

I played with him at FSU and he was as serious about his studies as he was football. He missed an entire semester for study abroad in Oxford and carried a GPA north of 3.8 if I recall. He has been a blessing since returning to Tallahassee and is a tremendous representative of Florida State University. On top of being an obviously decorated scholar he is a pretty genuine dude. There are a few more like him but the college football world could use many.

Wow. The looks on the politicians' faces said a lot. Thank you, Myron Rolle, for representing student athletes and being a voice for them!

While listening to his statement I found myself first thinking, "I wish more athletes sounded like this," then addended my thought to, "I wish more PEOPLE sounded like this."
I'd like to further addend to your thought by adding that I wish more members of Congress sounded like this.
