Five things to take from this: Woo! Woooo! WOOOOOOO!!!

"Like a prayer, I'll take you there.  It's like a dream to me."

That was outstanding.  I can not remember a more satisfying win at least since the Penn St. Henne to Manningham and this probably trumps that too.  This team has something very special about it.  Something that makes me feel like even the raised expectations of this and every other fan won't feel like a crushing weight to them.  With your true freshman QB cool as a cucumber, how can this team really feel the pressure?  We can take much from this performance.  Here are...

Five Things:

  1. Recruiting tons of wide receivers is a vital component for success for this system.  Mathews came up big in this game and we are lucky that he stuck around.  He has the skills to play in the NFL IME and could have gone elsewhere to showcase his skills.  We have all wondered at the shear number of wide receivers being recruited but I see now why we can never have enough.  Being able to insert viable options when others are injured is vital for making this offense move.
  2. Can we all feel good now about Rich Rod's coaching ability?  Good game plan going in?  Check.  Solid half time adjustments?  Check.  Great clock management and play-calling in crunch time?  Check.  The man is the Wizard of Offense.
  3. That may be the most potent offense that we face this season.  It really showed how the deep passing game can open up the running lanes and make ND's somewhat ponderous running backs look like world beaters.  I think our defense held together just enough here and should have easier sledding going forward.  I was especially impressed with GERG's adjustments at half time shutting down ND's offense in the 3rd Qtr.
  4. Brandon Minor is our best running option.  No surprise there but still nice to confirm it.
  5. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Looking Ahead:

Michigan's schedule lines up nicely for the next few weeks.  Two more home games in a row should help this team gel even further.  The progression in opponent quality is nice as well with Eastern probably being improved but still Eastern (helps with the possible letdown game), then Indiana a slight step up leading to our first road test at Sparty.  This could be the best set up we have ever had for a long winning streak.  So what we all must tell ourselves is:  He is a freshman.  He will make mistakes that cost us games we should win.

Still I am thinking 8-4, possibly 9-3 and playing on New Years Day at this point.

I hope that everyone was able to enjoy this game and that everyone made it home safe and sound.  Have a great week.

6.) DOUBLE WOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hard to put what we saw yesterday into words even the following morning. I couldnt agree more with your #3. ND was good and dangerous. The D matches up so much better with much of the rest of the schedule. And with the offense averaging 35 points per game.....well, the league is officially On Notice. Hope they enjoyed 2008.

Each of these two games have increased my expectations for the team a bit. While at the beginning of the season I thought 5-7 would be the lowest acceptable finish, right now, I'd be somewhat disapointed, but not surprised, at 7 wins. Of course our upper bounds seem so much higher now. The next two games can only lower our expectations. Hopefully we'll take care of business and be 4-0 going into the State game.

don't be surprised if we are undefeated, heading into the Penn State game. if we beat MSU, after beating EMU, there is something to be said for the inherent momentum.

I'm very concerned about East Lansing on October 3. Everyone's writing Sparty off and calling it an inevitable win for us, but we'll be a very young team on its first road trip. I'm not going to go so far as to say we don't win, but it's a red flag on the schedule. Obviously I don't think Iceman Tate will be rattled, but I'll feel a lot better about the season as a whole when I see our team travel well for the first time in unfriendly territory.

Yes, and I think that when a team gets upset like State just did, they become more dangerous. State will come into that game with less pressure on them, probably being an underdog. Also, you know the State coaching staff and players are "circling" that game on their schedule as a way to redeem themselves after an embarrassment.

Agreed Biaka. State will be ready to go b/c it is M coming to town. It doesn't even really matter how they fare against ND next week. Sparty will be hungry to beat us. Howeva, I still think we have a chance for a 'W' in EL no matter how much their wagons are circled.

While I *am* considering the next two weeks as auto-wins, I refuse to overlook the @ MSU and @ Iowa games. I am not looking past 4-0. There's a little Winston Wolf principle here - let's all put away our "popsicles" and take this season one step at a time. Oh, one more thing. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

I couldn't be more excited than I am right now about this team. My 6-6 expectations from two weeks ago seem a bit silly after watching how well they've played in the first two weeks. And the schedule does set up nicely to make a run at anything from 7-5 to 8-4 (I won't dare say more than that. I also realized while fretting about the poor defensive showing that this will be the best offense we face all regular season. PSU might be pretty good as well, but ND has an NFL prospect at just about every skill position on offense and the line played well. But before we start making plans for bowl games, let's keep a few things in mind: -- We've already lost Hemmingway and Stonum to injury so far this season. We're about to start playing Rogers and Stokes. That's a big drop off. -- Minor looked great, but can he stay healthy? If his 16 carries go to someone else on Saturday we probably lose. -- Tate could not be off to a better start (for fun, go compare his stats to Henne's first couple of games). But we're one big hit away from Robinson or Sheridan playing and that's a HUGE drop off. -- We ended the game playing a walk-on at safety. And our CB depth is non-existent. I guess all I'm saying is that we still need a lot of things to go right the rest of the year, specifically with regard to heatlh. I expect this team to lose a game they should win just as much as I expect them to win another game they should lose.

Agree. Now, with the two great victories, it's time to build some depth through game experience. I think we can now see how razor thin the defense is and how susceptible we are to injury on that side of the ball. These next two games will (hopefully) be a great time to get early leads and then get a lot of folks some playing time. I'm less worried about the depth on offense but we can now see what we already knew - just how important the QB is in this offense. Without the Force, we don't win that game saturday. As much as I hate to say it, but if Tate goes down I think Sheridan is a better option at the moment than D-Rob (with D-Rob still sprinkled in for the home run threat).

Can we all feel good now about Rich Rod's coaching ability? Good game plan going in? Check. Solid half time adjustments? Check. Great clock management and play-calling in crunch time? Check. The man is the Wizard of Offense. The half-time adjustments this coaching staff made were just absolutely huge. We were getting outplayed on the line on both sides of the ball in the first half. In the second half, we started to get some pressure on Clausen, and suddenly an ND team that wants to bomb away on long passes just can't make it work. In the first half, they killed us 3 times with that screen play. In the second half, that play failed badly the only time they tried to run it. Meanwhile, our offense had stalled out in the 2nd quarter, but in the second half Rodriguez found the right calls to get it clicking again. Great adjustments all around. Another thing I haven't heard mentioned yet: while we allowed a fair share of long passes yesterday, we were very effective in limiting yards after the catch. Obviously it would be preferable not to let them complete those passes in the first place. But given that our D-line was having trouble getting pressure and that Clausen with time to throw + Floyd + Tate is going to equal some big completions, I think limiting yards after the catch was huge in keeping ND's offense from having much greater success.

1. Agree with Wolverbean. The tackling skills by UM defenders, especially, the secondary has improved a lot. It seemed the first defender, if they didn't make the tackle, at least held on to the ball carrier so other defenders could help make the tackle. 2. Cissoko (sp?): did he just have a bad day or did ND really expose him as a weakness in the secondary? Good news, not sure UM will face to many teams with as good a combination of QB and two wr's as ND has. 3. UM's run defense seemed feast or famine. They either did a good job of shutting down ND's run or gave up a big chunk of yardage. 4. ND was a better team then I thought. Not that I thought they were going to bad or an easy W, but I was impressed with Claussen and Tate/Floyd as well as their oline. UM didn't seem like they were able to get to much pressure on Claussen unless they were rushing more then 4 guys. 5. Forcier has exceeded my expectations. Along the same lines, my expectations for the season have risen. I was just hoping for a bowl game, but now, a good bowl game is a distinct possibility.

Actually I was disappointed with the tackling after last week's performance. It was still better than last year but not as good as it will need to be. Cissoko is good but was overmatched. Our run defense was bad at least in part because of the double deep threat we were facing early and often. The rest I agree with.

I don't think you should be too hard on Cissoko. He's still young, and he was going up against one of the top wideouts in the country. What's more, he was getting essentially no help over the top from the safties. Sure ND went after him with quite a bit of success, but he didn't give up any killer 1-play drives either. I'd say he played quite admirably given the circumstances.

I personally would wait and see how Floyd/Tate do against other corners before concluding that Cissoko had a bad game or was overmatched. Clausen is an experienced, talented qb, with a veteran, big o-line, throwing to probably the best wr combo in the college game. My guess is Cissoko and Warren won't look too bad in retrospect once the season is half to three-quarters over.

I agree with AC. While this is a nice win, there is still a long season ahead. Given our paper thin depth in the secondary and on the D-line, and even at QB, we can't take anything for granted. Let's try and keep our expectations in check as that has been working for us well so far.

This team is better than 7-5 or 8-4... One of the nice things about being young, is lots of players get worked in early and get valuable experience. After last week, there are 2 "easy" games coming up where players like JT Floyd will get even more experience... I would think that Michigan goes in to the PSU and OSU (biggest tests on the schedule) with a much more battle tested team...and a good record to boot... Call me crazy, but I dont see more than 3 reg season losses this year... a good bowl game, and next year looking very bright

I agree that ND is probably the most potent offense we will face outside of PSU and OSU for the rest of the season. But keep in mind that although teams like MSU, Wisky, Iowa, etc will have less powerful offenses than ND, they will probably have somewhat better defenses too. We absolutely must go 4-0 both from a wins and a confidence standpoint. At that point, we need to shoot for at least of a split of the Iowa and MSU games. I certainly think we can win both, but being at tough road venues we could also lose both if things start going wrong. At that point, we roll though Delaware State to go to 6-1 heading into the PSU game. Again, a win is possible here, but still less than 50% if you ask me. At 6-2 in mid-October we are in excellent position to win 7,8,9 games. Illinois, Purdue, and Wisky all look beatable, but again (again) two of these games are on the road so no guarantees. Hopefully we get that 7th win early in this stretch to really take the pressure off of ensuring a bowl game. I figure we will win two of these three games, and face off against OSU with an 8-3 record. Hard to predict a win here, but this is the point where the season can go from excellent to legendary IMO. Bottom line is that I will breath a huge sigh of relief when Michigan hits that 7 win mark. Everything else is just icing on the cake after that. But man, I love me some icing!

i was thinking/hoping for 6-6 at the beginning of the season. I now optimistically expect 7-5 with the absolute possibility of pulling off some other big wins and getting to 8-4 or 9-3, but I will be happy with 7-5. Just a few weeks ago we were still a little worried about where we were headed so I am not going over board. I am; however, predicting a minimum 9-3 next year and for many years to come. I think Richrod and the team turned a major corner yesterday and the "future so's bright we got to wear shades.

Cissoko = Toast Ezeh = Doormat Hopefully those two can get their sh*t together in time for some of the tougher games on the schedule. BooBoo looked lost out there on a lot plays and Obi needs to work on WRAPPING UP! Other than that, great game! GO BLUE!

Does anyone think that since Tate has proven himself as a capable starting QB that this is going to make Devin look elsewhere? I hope it's just me looking to far into it! I would hope Rich Rod would have a way to work all three QB's in but to young men, that might not be the most appealing situation?

Are we going to have to answer this question every time Tate has a good game and UM wins? Someone asked this same question last week after the WMU win. I expect Tate to play this well, and in fact get better, each game this year so I hope this question doesn't keep coming up. I don't think Gardner is afraid of competition. Couple that with the fact that he will likely red shirt his first year and then get a lot of snaps as a redshirt frosh and even more as a sophmore and you have Devin playing 2 solid years as a starter which is what most college QB's get. The final thing that I think is a huge factor is Devin seeing how a QB is utilized in RR's system. The ceiling for him playing RR's offense is.....well...there isn't one that I can see other than those white things they call clouds way up there.

If Devin sees Tate and thinks, "Man, I ain't gonna play" LET HIM MOVE ON. I'd rather have a QB that relishes competition than flees from it, but yes, in a perfect world, he'd come in and redshirt. And let's not forget that Tate never wavered in his commitment when Newsome and Beaver were both aboard. If he wants to come, he'll come. If he doesn't, than it shouldn't be a concern.
