Tight End Recruiting: Dust Settling Soon?

The recruitment of top-100 NY TE Jeremy Ruckert, a newly minted five-star on 247 after a stellar performance at The Opening, is nearing a conclusion:

Ohio State has long been the presumed leader, followed by Michigan and then the rest of the pack, and while Ruckert's been quiet about his recruitment it looks like that remains the case. Wolverine247's Isaiah Hole expects Ruckert to choose the Buckeyes after a source who'd held out hope for Michigan's chances got pessimistic:

However, speaking to the same source after Ruckert announced his decision date, that optimism had faded quite significantly. The source told Wolverine247 that Michigan hasn't made the type of gains they would have liked in recent weeks.

Unless something changes between now and Ruckert's decision date in a week and a half, all signs are now pointing to Ohio State being the choice -- they currently lead with 100% of the 247Sports Crystal Ball.

Losing Ruckert to OSU would stink, no question. Michigan still has a lot to like about their tight end recruiting, however. Four-star TX TE Mustapha Muhammad remains one of the better bets to end up in the class—Michigan owns all 23 picks on his crystal ball. Top-100 IL TE Luke Ford, meanwhile, just set up a visit for July 22nd, and 247's Steve Wiltfong thinks the Wolverines could make a big move:

Alabama and Georgia lead here but this Michigan visit I think can flip the script on the whole thing being a Midwest school that really features the TE. I expect Ford and his family to really hit it off with Coach Harbaugh and his staff and the rest of the people in town.

With the visit occurring a week ahead of the BBQ at the Big House, the coaches will be able to give Ford and family plenty of attention.

2018 Updates: "Dream School" For Addison

Following up on a note from last week's roundup: four-star CA ATH Bryan Addison told TMI's Josh Newkirk that Michigan is now in his top group:

Addison admits he grew up a fan of Michigan, UCLA and USC, so the offer form the Wolverines happened to be a “dream” scenario for him. He says now that he holds an offer from the Wolverines, he has added them to his top tier of offered schools.

“I’ve always wanted to play for Michigan since I was younger,” Addison said. “Playing for Michigan has just been a dream for me."

He added that he's planning to head to Ann Arbor on an official visit. So far UCLA has pursued Addison, who could be a wideout or defensive back, while USC hasn't made him a priority. If that stays the case, Michigan should have a legitimate shot. He isn't planning to make a decision until signing day.

Another California four-star, safety Julius Irvin, is preparing to narrow his list to five. Based on this article from Scout's Blair Angulo, it appears a couple Midwest schools will make the cut alongside USC, UCLA, and Washington:

Two others that appear to be in great shape to earn official visits during the season are Michigan and Notre Dame.

"I'm planning to take all my five officials and making my decision around my birthday in October," Irvin said. "I want to go out east since it's farther away.

"I've never been out to the Midwest so I'm just looking to see how the culture fits me. It's a lot different than out here. Distance does not matter. I talk to Notre Dame and Michigan a lot. I'm in contact with coach (Brian) Polian and at Michigan it's coach (Brian) Smith. They've both been reaching out to me every week and just keeping in touch."

That's far from the only only M-ND battle. Four-star NJ OLB Shayne Simon, who said last week that the Wolverines and Irish are "neck and neck" at the top of his list, plans to make a decision in the near future, per Sam Webb:

“Probably before the season,” said Simon specifying his timeline.

If he can’t settle on a choice within that timeframe he plans to take visits in the fall. At this point, though, all signs point to him reaching a decision in the next few months. The question of who leads as Simon enters the home stretch is the subject of great debate. His connections to Notre Dame (teammates Justin and Jayson Ademilola are committed to the Irish and former teammate Brandon Wimbush is slated to be ND’s starting quarterback) have long been cited as lures to South Bend.  His connections to Michigan… his mother and aunt are alums… have been well documented.

Ohio State is hanging around, but this looks like a two-team race, one that could easily go either way.

Top-100 GA WR Kearis Jackson set a commitment date for August 19th and told 247's Rusty Mansell it's "going to come down to either Georgia or Auburn. Despite that, Michigan may still get a shot at a later flip:

Even though he will make a decision there could be some official visits coming in the fall to others schools not currently mentioned as much in the mix for the four-star WR.

“Notre Dame, Ohio State and Michigan are some schools that may get officials at the end of September or sometime in the fall,” he said.

It's safe to file him under "longshot."

247 updated their 2018 Top247; none of Michigan's commits moved more than a handful of spots one way or the other.

2019 Updates: Trinity Trio To Visit

Five-star 2019 OH DE Zach Harrison visited Michigan for the second time last month, hitting it off with Greg Mattison and Jim Harbaugh. He told Sam Webb he's looking to see more of the program:

For now, Harrison publicly considers all his suitors to be equals. If Michigan is to rise to the fore it will to build upon the comfort that was established during his last visit.

“I still need to find out a lot because I’ve only been there twice,” he said. “I just need to get there more often.”

Doing so is in the plans for Harrison.

While Harbaugh hasn't had much success prying top Ohio prospects away from the Buckeyes, OSU doesn't have their usual fandom advantage with Harrison, who's originally from Chicago.

Four-star quarterback Michael Johnson Jr., Michigan's latest offer recipient at the position, was the subject of attention when Harbaugh hired his father, who shortly thereafter accepted a position coach job at Oregon. The younger Johnson told The Wolverine's Austin Fox that won't play into his decision:

With his father on the Oregon staff, one might think the Ducks would be the team to beat for Johnson Jr.’s services, but he insisted that’s not the case.

“Honestly, it doesn’t give them an advantage at all,” he said.

Meanwhile, Michigan will host several top 2019 prospects this month. Three four-star recruits from St. Louis—top-50 ATH Isaiah Williams, top-100 WR Marcus Washington, and top-150 OLB Shammond Cooper—will see Ann Arbor as part of a four-school tour that also includes Alabama, Ohio State, and, uh, Illinois, per 247's Steve Wiltfong. Another top-100 prospect, FL OT William Putnam, informed Steve Lorenz he'll visit on July 26th with his parents in tow.

to play in an offense that doesn't use the TE for receiving unless he is happy for an AJ Williams / Marcus Baugh blocking role.  You would think the folks around him would be pushing him to a school that features the TE as a pass catching position.  Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia and USC (just to play with Darnold for a year or two) would seem like they are the most attractive.

To prove the point, Ohio State and Indiana TEs had a COMBINED 300 yards in 2016 vs. 580 yards for Troy Fumagalli and 546 for Jake Butt.  I didn't bother with ND since playing for a guy who looks like an eggplant doesn't seem enticing to me.

Sam Webb talked about this the other day and basically OSU is selling him on the fact that they will change the offense when he gets there and start featuring TEs.  I guess they are saying that Marcus Baugh (who was close to a 5* himself) is a bust that is not worth incorporating into the offense.  I wonder if they are also telling that to the RBs and Slot WRs that they are recruiting.

Whatever we think, the guy is buying what they are selling so unfortunately that is all that matters.

OSU is selling him on the fact that they will change the offense when he gets there

Every program in the history of ever has said that to round-peg-square-hole recruits.

But they never change.

Right, they are going to change their entire offense developed over the course of years just for one guy.  Who in their right mind would believe that?

But when you are a teenager and the entire school stops classes and fills up the gym just so you can say where you are going to college, you tend to have an outsized opinion on your impact on the rest of the world.

Exactly.  A 17 year old kid that is told he's awesome for the past 5 years will think it's only natural that OSU or other big time programs continue that same tune.  In fact, it would be a dose of cold water on him if a program DIDN'T say that.

I wonder to what extent does OSU vs Michigan differ in that regard?  Clearly both are now merit based systems.  So at some point both Meyer & Harbaugh give the, "what you did in high school means nothing" speech.

But is the difference Meyer indulges the kid's egos in the recruitment period, then does the bucket of cold water once he has their LOI and has them on campus?  Whereas Harbaugh gives them the shock & awe talk during the recruiting process?

Or does Harbaugh use the flattery during the recruiting too?

I could see pros & cons to both methods.  The honesty up front is honest & also weeds out the prima-donnas pretty quickly.  But I could also see it being unnecessarily combative/cold and pre-emptively weeding kids out that might be really good fits overall.

I sense that Harbaugh is a little more up-front.

He has a hard time being anybody but who he is.  So he will say things like players should have summer jobs and so on, because that's what he thinks.

I'm sure that's not the kind of thing that many elite recruits are interested in hearing, but Harbaugh says it anyway.

I think that's one of the reason the Rome trip was so beneficial to Michigan recruiting.  It showed that Harbaugh is fun.  He's not just all work.

When he came here, a lot of recruits did not know what to make of him.  They heard that he is big on hard work and competition, but they didn't hear much else.

They can now see for themselves that there is another side to Jim Harbaugh that's fun to be around.  He's not all just crazy work.

True, they could be lying or doing a bait & switch.

It's also possible that for some players, playing time or their exact role is a THRESHOLD issue and not an absolute issue. Meaning--as long as the kid feels like he will be featured enough to get the attention of the NFL, that's all that matters in that category, and the rest comes down to likelihood of winning championships, how easy the classes on campus are, how hot the co-eds are, etc.

No doubt Michigan beats OSU in terms of TE use.  But if OSU convinces this guy that what they offer on the field is "enough", it's possible the other variables start to get weighed in as well.

Here's to whoever Michigan gets at TE going rounds above anyone stupid enough to buy what Meyer and Wilson are selling. If Wilson gets offered a head coaching gig he is gone. Then were are you at. If you are a highly rated TE you should not be looking at osu and if you are well you are not looking out for your best interests, but hey good luck. Meyer is blowing smoke up your ass and everyone is telling you this and you still don't listen. Hmmm. I am good with Luke Ford and MM and would be a great haul. Hope they both go no lower than the second round. Baugh would have blown up at Michigan and everyone knows it, but hey he chose osu so here's to you not getting drafted. One more time.....Hey Ruckert wake up!!!. Meyer is lying to you, ask Weber.

While I agree that M has to be one of the, if not the most attractive place for a TE, it's not like OSU doesn't use them at all, and they get them drafted: Heuerman in 2015 and Vannett in 2016, both in the 3rd round.  Heuerman had a pretty productive 2013 before getting hurt in 2014.  Plus, Meyer can point to Aaron Hernandez as how he'd use a pass catching TE.

And if you don't like playing school...then that could be a reason why.

Blue in Paradise

July 12th, 2017 at 3:30 PM ^

but sort of meh from a pass catching standpoint.  Vannett was barely used as a receiver and as you said Heuerman had one big year catching the ball in 2013 (which is a bit dated 4 seasons later).  Looking forward at Kevin Wilson's offense, he didn't have a TE crack 100 yards this past season despite a QB who actually threw the ball quite a bit.

Hernandez was nearly a decade ago and a different offense on a different team.  Very little correlation with OSU in 2018.  That would be more of a reminder of little TE pass catching usage Meyer has overseen at OSU.

I think you helped make my point that those guys are good blocking TEs, which is why they got drafted and are hanging around the NFL.  If that is what this kid wants to be, then go to OSU, if he wants to catch passes then it makes no sense.

If Meyer and Wilson are selling him on changing the offense, then he is basically saying that all of the past OSU TEs weren't good enough to catch passes.

Blue in Paradise

a tragic situaiton (for the Hernandez victims and their families) but I would be interested in whether Urban would actually talk about / show tape on Aaron Hernandez.  On one hand, it is the one big pass catching TE that he has coached, on the other hand - do you really want to remind people that you had this guy on your team?

There was a lot of smoke around Hernandez off field issues in college and Meyer didn't seem to do much about it.  The kid may or may not care but that would seem to be a negative for the parents.

osu has had more success recently and that plays into it obviously.  But Harbaugh and company are turning the tides.  If we can at least beat osu and hopefully get to playoffs, it may signal a major change.  With success on the field, I can't imagine top recruits picking an osu degree over Michigan.  Plus Ann Arbor is so much better than columbus.  Would be a shocker if Ruckert came to Michigan, but we'll be fine either way.

Wins and championships. Until Michigan slays the ruby and popoise dragon and makes some major plays in January, (somehow it slipped through the cracks that OSU is no longer "Scarlet and Grey") kids will continue to eschew AA for Ohio and other programs that present a "sexier" profile. In Harbaugh we trust.

Competition at their position. It applies to every position group in team sports. Some people have always been "the man"at their chosen sport growing up. At a certain point some cannot fathom competing for their spot. I would have to say we need those looking to compete as opposed being anointed. I have no idea where these boys fall, but some schools feature certain position and others don't. They can get to the league either way.

Because as bad the Urban Meyer offense seems to be statistically for TE - he keeps putting them in the NFL.

Drafted TE coached or recruited by Meyer:

Cornelius Ingram - 5th

Aaron Hernandez - 4th

Jordan Reed -3rd

Jeff Heuerman - 3rd

Nick Vannett - 3rd

Drafted TE coached or recruited by Harbaugh:

Jim Dray - 7th

Coby Fleener - 2nd

Levine Toilolo - 4th

Zach Ertz - 2nd

Jake Butt - 5th

Anyone have any insight as to what might make the OSU offense attractive to a high caliber TE prospect?

I just don't think of Meyer's system as being one that accentuates that particular position.  What am I overlooking?

Obviously, it may just be the allure of OSU, which is fine, but for a top notch HS tight end who is looking to acquire the skills to make himself an elite NFL prospect, is there something about Meyer's offense that lends itself to that?  I mean, other than Jeff Heuerman from a couple of years ago, I can't even think of a single Buckeye tight end that has had a season of any distinction; and he didn't exactly light things up statistically.

Maybe they're selling prospects on the idea that Kevin Wilson will be emphasizing the position more?

If your goals are 1) going to the NFL; 2) winning; 3) not worrying about school work (and I don't mean this as a knock on the youngster), then going to OSU is defensible. Good luck to him if that's his process.

We have #'s 1 and basically 2 under wraps, but #3 will give folks some problems. That's ok.

SpikeFan2016

July 12th, 2017 at 3:49 PM ^

I think #2 is a big one.

Urban Meyer can plausibly say to these kids, "if you come here, you'll beat Michigan four years in a row, go to the CFP multiple times and win the Big Ten multiple times" and they have reason to believe him/consider that a likely possibility.

If Harbaugh said that to a recruit, he'd be laughed at. We aren't going to be able to beat OSU on the recruiting trail until we beat them on the field.

BuckNekked

July 12th, 2017 at 5:25 PM ^

I highly doubt that if Harbaugh said that to a recruit, the recruit would laugh.

And Michigan hasnt beaten OSU on the recruiting trail On the regular since before Woody took over. Some of you kids have very romantic notions of Michigans history that are only mostly true. Even while we whipped on Cooper for all those years they were usually the more talented team.

CRISPed in the DIAG

OSU was probably more talented most years. Maybe it was my youthful exuberance, but I was confident facing OSU through childhood (70's) college (late 80's) and early adult (90's). It wasn't till the Sweatervest that I felt like we were outmatched on the field and sideline.
