Tuesday Recruitin' Makes Summer Plans Comment Count

Busy Month Ahead?

We've covered the distinct possibility of Michigan adding quarterbacks Joe Milton and Tyler Shough to the 2018 class this month. 247's Steve Lorenz went over a few more potential additions in his post on May's top recruiting storylines:

There are a handful of heavy Michigan leans out there who could decide at any time, with Traverse City (MI) West four-star offensive lineman Ryan Hayes being among them. Grand Rapids (MI) four-star Jalen Mayfield is also sitting out there and still appears to be a heavy, heavy Michigan lean. Jersey City four-star Shayne Simon has mentioned shutting things down early, although that could easily change.

Hayes and Mayfield both appear to be near-locks to end up in the class sooner or later. Simon, a S/OLB prospect who'd probably be a VIPER at Michigan, has several top programs in the mix; he ran down his extensive spring visit tour—Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, UCLA, and Stanford—for 247's Steve Wiltfong. He had high praise for all of them, but his crystal ball reads 100% for Michigan, and that includes picks from both Steves. He maintained he has no current timeline for a decision, however.

Another top target whose recruitment may come to a close in the near future is four-star NY TE Jeremy Ruckert, who has named four finalists—Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Wisconsin—and is eyeing a summer decision, likely in July, per Scout's Brian Dohn. Ruckert's choice is expected to come down to Michigan or OSU; the Buckeyes currently have all nine picks on his crystal ball.

Four-star PA WR Jahan Dotson is also nearing a decision after narrowing his options to Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State, per Wiltfong. The Nittany Lions currently hold the edge after a recent visit but Michigan will get a visit this month to make an impression. They have a potential edge; Dotson is originally from New Jersey:

When Dotson returns to Michigan it will be his first time in Ann Arbor since last year.

“Michigan they have a big New Jersey connection and Coach Partridge he’s been close to me so that’s been a good connection for me. Big stadium, there’s a lot of people and the campus is in town and that’s cool.”

It should be a busy month.

Michigan Camps Set; Satellite Camps Coming Together

Michigan opened up registration for their summer football camps, and as Scout's Allen Trieu noted on The Victors Board, they're taking a slightly different approach than in past years [emphasis mine]:

First, the Big Man Camp and Aerial Assault are separate now. There is a positional camp on the 17th with Aerial Assault too, but the big guys get their own day now on the 16th.

There is a one-day elite camp on June 23rd. So it looks like the "Wolverine Technique School" which is the traditional 3-4 day camp, is no longer. Most schools have an elite one-day, Michigan, has not consistently done that. They had one for one or two years under Rich Rodriguez and then went back to the old format. I like the elite one-day addition. Most kids don't like to camp at a school for several days anymore and even though kids would show up for one day during that camp, you'd get top guys coming on different days. Now you get them all there on one day. Last year, you had a night camp, you had a day camp, you had a week long camp, you had several on-campus camps. Now, you'll get all the talent here on the 23rd. I would expect that that will be a very good camp.

I'm a fan of this change; getting as many top prospects on campus at the same time as possible is usually much more effective than spreading it out, as elite players want to play with (and compete in camps settings against) other elite players.

As the Freep notes, Michigan is also getting their satellite camp schedule figured out; while the NCAA put limitations on satellite camps, Michigan can still do ten of them.

With the restricted schedule, U-M is trying to fit the satellite camps around its own on-campus camps from June 16-17 and 23-24,

So far it appears U-M will fill up the dates in early June with the Valdosta [Georgia] camp on June 4, the Tennessee State camp on June 9 and UCLA on June 11. Harbaugh split his staff to different venues last year but that may not be necessary with the restricted schedule this year.

Expect more to come, though one of them probably won't be Sound Mind Sound Body, which got hit hard by the new NCAA rules.

Grudging 2019 Stuff

Per Lorenz, Michigan will get a summer visit from five-star 2019 IMG Academy RB Noah Cain, a Texas native and the top-ranked back in the class:

"The weekend of June 20th I believe," he told Wolverine247 on Saturday. "I'm highly interested in them and know that Jim Harbaugh is a great coach. I'm excited to check them out."

High four-star GA SDE Chris Hinton told Rivals' Chad Simmons that Michigan is in his top group:

"I am still adding offers and I am going to give everyone a fair chance, but my top schools are California, Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina and Stanford," said Hinton. "There is no order. Cal has not offered me yet, they are doing a full evaluation, but I am seeing all these schools the same way right now."

As his list suggests, Hinton is placing a strong emphasis on academics, and he mentions that he could come to a relatively early decision. That could be good news for Michigan, the first program to extend an offer and a constant presence in his top group.

According to The Wolverine's Brandon Brown, Michigan offered four-star MO WR Marcus Washington, who visited campus a couple weeks ago. Washington is teammates with four-star 2019 ATH Isaiah Williams, who also holds a Michigan offer and has shown high interest in the program.

There's been concern about the recruitment of potential five-star Belleville lineman Devontae Dobbs. The quote he gave to TMI's Josh Newkirk shows why it's way too early to get worked up about him:

Dobbs, who was offered at Michigan's annual recruiting barbecue in August, says he’s been on consistent contact with the Wolverines coaching staff. However, he says he's still unable to give a proper gauge of Michigan yet, because he says he hasn’t been on campus enough to know what U-M’s program is all about.

“I can’t really say for sure yet because I haven’t taken that many visits (to Michigan), like time management has been messed up, so I have been up there lately,” he said.

Dobbs will have a national recruitment; there's a long way to go here.

Etc.

Michigan made the top 11 for four-star NC DT Rick Sandidge and the top 12 for four-star OH DE Tyreke Smith. Neither of those names has come up very often in connection to Michigan.

MLive's Brendan Quinn catches up with 2018 point guard commit David DeJulius, who says his commitment is "stronger than ever."

Why does the ncaa keep making new ambiguous rules when they won't or can't enforce the ones they have? The SEC is already cheating the rules the wanted put in place.

Parsons named Michigan to his top 5 in February, so there was clearly a lot of interest at one point. What changed? Gene Hankerson at scout said this on twitter. Zordich is the PA area recruiter.

I'm hard-pressed to believe this staff is being outworked by anyone on the recruiting trail. I don't know if the staff feels it's a lost cause, or feels like they've got higher priorities, or something else, but I seriously, seriously doubt this staff is being outworked for anyone they're really going after

I'm not following this conversation.

You said you wondered why Michigan didn't want him.

And about four posts later, you're saying Michigan wants him.

Regardless, my point still stands: If he was a priority, they would make him a priority.

Not hard to follow at all. Michigan wants Micah Parsons, but haven't put in the work necessary to make themselves a viable option for him. You can believe what you want, but no one is more plugged into PA recruiting than Gene.

Waitaminnit - so you're saying Michigan wants a player badly, but not badly enough to "work hard" to get him?

Question: In what way, shape or form does that statement conform with the reality of what we've seen of JH's coaching/recruiting style?

But if some guy in PA says it then it must be true - cuz he's so "plugged into" PA crootin'?!

I don't get ya, brother - but keep believing Gene, whatever...

works the chain gang, climbs a tree, jumps into a pool, travels the off season by night to do camps all day every day with a staff that follows, "I don't take vacations, I don't get sick, observe major holidays, I'm a jack hammer" is not working hard for a recruit he really "wants"? Let's explore this theory more..... or go with Magnus option A or B

Every top recruit Michigan has wanted the past 3 years they have gone after hard under Harbaugh.  Coach will do sleep overs and post up in their HS classes to push for a recruit...but somehow 5 start Micah Parsons just slipped through the cracks and they are getting "outworked."

Your logic is incredibly flawed and inconsistent.  The coaches either know that they have little to no shot with the kid, or have decided to go another direction - assuming of course that they indeed are not pushing hard.

So, possible scenarios based on all info available

A) They want him but know they have little to no shot so aren't pushing as hard as others as it would be a waste of time and resources.

B) They have other options they are looking at that seem more likely to sign at UM

C) Or your idiotic logic - They really want him, but just don't want to put in the extra work to get him - despite the fact that this goes against every crumb of knowledge we have about Harbaugh and his staff.

I'll go with options A or B on this one.

I believe the phrase "don't shoot the messnger" is the term I'm looking for here. I'm not going to pretend I have intimate knowledge of Michigan's recruitment of Parson's, but I'm also not going to ignore what insiders are reporting. The coaches aren't perfect and do make mistakes, maybe this is one of those rare times we are seeing that.

Seems like he is leaning to OSU.  Doesn't mean they aren't trying, could just be more behind the scenes.

Also, this kid has been a bit "difficult" from the beginning - he was complaining about not getting enough attention at the 2015 OSU game visit plus the mind games he played with PSU.

Of course, given his talent he is still very much worth the effort.  And he is only 17 years old, plenty of time to mature.

We are also after Dorian Hardy who is from Paramus and a similar players - without the freakish athleticism but would also be an excellent get.

I checked, and GA SDE Chris Hinton is the son of former NFL All Pro Chris Hinton, whom I recall as both a really talented player and a really bright guy (went to Northwestern).  That makes me want Hinton even more than your typical five-star.  I expect he'll be a tough get.  According to this article -- http://www.colts.com/news/article-1/Catching-up-With-Chris-Hinton/815bb… -- his Dad's favorite stadium was the Big House, so maybe that counts for something?  Yeah, probably not.

At the risk of being Debbie Downer, I think the recent draft results show that getting five-star recruits matters. Bama, OSU, Clemson do that in spades. So far not so much us. I don't know if we can consistently hang with teams that are bringing in 5+ five start recruits every year; despite good class rankings, there is a significant gulf between M and those other teams...

A grand total of one (1) 5-star was on the field, along with a couple of walk-ons, against the Buckeyes just a few months ago.  As I recall, the team led by a bunch of 'not 5-stars', had the Bucks beat until the refs said no.

Quit your whining about stars and trust Jim MF Harbaugh to develop the players he recruits.  Good Gawd...

Maizen

May 2nd, 2017 at 2:02 PM ^

He's not "whining" about anything. If star ranking don't matter then why do people celebrate Harbaugh's back to back top 5 recruiting classes? It's not a coincidence Bama is college football's king and they have signed 7 straight #1 recruiting classes.

buckeyekiller1

This is when you need a difference maker at QB. How good do all those Bama 5 stars look against elite college QBs? Johnny football ripped them every year fresh out of the B12. Deshaun Watson did it to them 2 years in a row, hell even Chad Kelly looked good against them for years. I realize those are mostly dual threat guys, but Watson was definitely a pass first guy and Kelly isn't very mobile. We need a line that can hold up and a difference maker at the QB position and we can hang with anybody. The skill position players we've been getting on offense are going to be a significant upgrade over anything we've seen since the early-mid '00s. Defense with Don Brown at coordinator isn't going anywhere even with all the new blood. But if we don't get back to Michigan football and pushing people around in the trenches then all that talent on the outside won't mean shit.

Any chance we flip that DT from St. Peter's prep in jersey city. Currently commited to ND? We still after him? Same school as Simon both have Michigan offers.

"Most kids don't like to camp at a school for several days anymore "

I wonder why not? I went to UM Football and Wrestling camps. I wasn't in any danger of being recruited, but I thought it was kind of neat to have the freedom.

You answered the question yourself - you weren't in danger of being recruited. You were camping for the experience, because it was, to some extent, above you. It was a wow experience.

Elite kids have a crap-ton of camps to attend. Under Armour, Army, Rivals 5-star, OSU, Michigan, Florida, etc. There's only so much time and money you have to camp during the couple months of summer. If you camp for 4 days at Michigan, that's an entire week down that's shot (when you add a day on both ends for travel).

i realize its just a sign of the times but the value of the technique camp went way beyond recruiting, especially for the kids. i felt like i had honestly made my team better by making myself better.
