Argh, I'm getting this up as quickly as possible after forgetting to save and having half the post eaten the first time around. Apparently I need a not-so-friendly reminder to use the save button more often. Duly noted.

Bri'onte Dunn Update: Fred Jackson Deployed

Bri'onte Dunn thoroughly enjoyed his Michigan visit last weekend ($, info in header), telling this to Sam Webb:

“It was a good atmosphere,” Dunn said regarding the Saturday afternoon spectacle at the Big House.  “That was first time going to an Ohio State - Michigan game at Michigan, and it was a good experience.  I think it was more intense (than last week's game versus Nebraska). It was a more important game, the game was close, and it was more fun.  The coaches were very happy about winning and they were talking about how they wanted me to come down there.  They were all hugging me and just very happy about me coming down two weeks in row.”

With Dunn being on Michigan's sideline as they faced the arch-rival school he's currently committed to, Dunn's stated disdain for playing in the spread, and Ohio State hiring noted spread guru Urban Meyer as their head coach, this is a done deal, right? Not so fast, my friend ($):

"Coach (Urban) Meyer called me tonight, and it was great speaking with him," Dunn stated. "I was told he was going to call me tonight, but it was still pretty awesome hearing him call. We talked for a while, and he also talked to my dad, and it went great."

"Coach Meyer said he's going to stop by my school and see me soon," he added. "I had a few questions I wanted to ask him, but I got kind of nervous and I never asked them. I will definitely look forward to talking to him face to face."

The big question that must be asked: How is Dunn going to fit into the offense when Urban Meyer has never produced a 1,000-yard rusher as a head coach, despite (contrary to his claims) having a couple Dunn-sized backs at Florida and Utah? That one could be tough to answer—at least honestly—for Meyer if he hopes to keep Dunn in the fold at OSU. Meanwhile, Michigan sent in Fred Jackson for an in-home visit, and while the conversation focused on academics ($, info in header), I'm sure Dunn was reminded he'd be like Tom Harmon but faster, with more Heismans, and a better post-playing acting career if he came to Ann Arbor. Dunn has confirmed that he'll be an early enrollee, so his decision will be coming in the relatively near future.

Another player who will be deciding soon is wideout Amara Darboh, who also had a real good time at the Ohio State game and has set a concrete timetable for his annoucement ($):

Sam Webb: As far as your recruitment goes, your coach did an interview last week and said a decision could come from you this week.  Is that accurate for you?

Amara Darboh: “Yeah, I think I need to talk to my guardian and people that are close to me and stuff, but yeah. I’m at that point where I think it could come soon. I think it’s going to be no later than before Christmas. I just want to get it done with and go into (shoulder) surgery knowing where I’m going to go.”

Darboh could take one last visit to Florida, but he's unsure if he'll do so—either way, the decision will come by Christmas and quite possibly sooner than that. Another wideout with a similar timetable is Jehu Chesson, who has Michigan in his top three and will announce by Christmas, according to TomVH ($). Chesson struck up a friendship with Darboh, and the two could even be a package deal ($, info in header), which would be a great sign for the Wolverines.

Also impressed with his visit, and for good reason, was Puyallup (WA) OL Josh Garnett, pictured at right with Jake Long and 2012 commit Erik Magnuson. Tim Sullivan has a feature on Garnett in the Free Press, and the signs look good for Michigan:

Over the weekend, Garnett visited Ann Arbor to take in the experience at Michigan for the first time. While in town, he met up with his friend, Calrsbad (Calif.) La Costa Canyon offensive lineman Erik Magnuson, who is already committed to Michigan. Thanks in part to Magnuson’s presence, Garnett enjoyed the visit, and has moved Michigan into the top group of schools on his list.

“Thank you to Michigan football for showing me a great time,” he said on his Twitter account Sunday. “I love it in Michigan can't wait to be back! Go Blue!”

The Wolverines are now in his top two along with Stanford ($). There's still a long way to go with Garnett's recruitment, as he'll be taking official visits to Notre Dame and Miami in December and January before making his final decision (he could visit Oklahoma, as well). Also in that free update: Michigan will make an in-home visit with Zach Banner tomorrow, and the Wolverines are in his top five with Notre Dame, Oklahoma, USC, and Washington.

Garnett and Banner aren't the only options for the final O-line spot in the class, as Michigan improved their standing with Chicago Simeon OL Jordan Diamond over the weekend ($, info in header):

“I loved it,” Diamond said regarding his time in Ann Arbor Saturday.  “I Ioved everything about it.  I loved the atmosphere, the fans, the crowd…it was absolutely crazy today!  I really enjoyed myself.  The game was crazy.  I absolutely loved it.  It was a different experience from the UMASS game I went to earlier in my career.  It moved (the Wolverines) up, definitely.  Definitely it did.”

How far up? We'll have to wait to find out, as Diamond plans on trimming his list down to 5-10 schools within the next couple of weeks—he's stated throughout the process that he's taking things slow, and that's exactly what he's doing. The Wolverines will almost certainly be a factor until the end, however.

Quickly: Urban Meyer's hiring isn't exactly good news for Michigan despite Dunn's spread hatred, as Yuri Wright said "heck yeah" when asked if he was now interested in the Buckeyes (free article); Stefon Diggs has narrowed his list to eight schools—Michigan, Cal, USC, Oklahoma, Florida, Auburn, Virginia, and Virginia Tech, who was a late replacement for Maryland on the list; another wideout to keep an eye on ($, info in header) is Upland (CA) four-star Kenny Lawler, who just decommitted from Arizona State; according to TomVH, Michigan is back to hotly pursuing TE Taylor McNamara ($), who's being recruited hard by fellow Californian Magnuson right now and is also friends with Garnett.

Pee-Wee Loves His Visit and Kalis Gets His Fifth Star

Ondre "Pee-Wee" Pipkins is the subject of a free article by Sam Webb, and you are strongly encouraged to read the whole thing:

“Aww man, that right there was like witnessing history,” Pipkins exclaimed.  “Michigan hadn’t beaten them in seven years.  I was just sitting back watching like, ‘wow, they actually did it!’  Everybody had a different outlook on Brady Hoke, saying he wasn’t going to win over eight games. Some said he wouldn’t even win eight games.  He proved a lot of people wrong.  I feel like he had the same team that Rich Rodriguez had and he basically took those kids and taught them how to play football instead of just telling them to play.  He actually broke it down and was teaching them.  That’s what (the players) were telling me on my visit.  ‘We actually learned how to play football.’  I was sitting in the stands and I was just happy for them.  They’d been working hard all season.”

Okay, mild gut-punch for the remaining Rodriguez zealots out there, but man, that kid is excited to be a Wolverine. Pipkins also walked into Greg Mattison's office wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers shirt—to which the former Ravens DC responded, "Get out of here!"—and spent time with Shane Morris recruiting Jordan Diamond. Fan favorite in the making? I think so.

Meanwhile, Rivals has released their new Rivals100 and Rivals250—Touch the Banner has you covered on all the changes (100, 250) for Michigan commits and targets—but the big news is that Kyle Kalis moved up and got his coveted fifth star:

"In 10 years of covering recruiting, Kalis is one of the most college-ready offensive linemen I have seen. Physically he appears able to step on a college field right now, and his technique is advanced beyond his years," said Rivals.com Midwest Recruiting Analyst Josh Helmholdt. "The other thing that sets Kalis apart is that he is a very versatile lineman. He can play right or left tackle but also bump down to guard if his college team needs him there."

National recruiting analyst Mike Farrell added that Kalis looked great in pass protection in his game against Don Bosco Prep, which helped him earn that fifth star as that opens up the opportunity for him to play pretty much anywhere on the line. In non-surprising news, considering the reaction to his commitment switch from Ohio Sate to Michigan, Kalis reitereated that he will not be going back to the Buckeyes now that Urban Meyer is their coach ($, info in header).

Quickly: Scout on Erik Magnuson and his recruiting efforts with Garnett and McNamara ($), and Tom runs down more visit reactions from The Game ($).

Holy [Bleep], Ty Isaac

DO WANT [emphasis mine]:

Following a record-setting game in which he displayed why he is – if not the best college prospect in Illinois – on a very short list of premier players in the state, Isaac could do nothing more than politely summon some soft-spoken words to reporters looking for him to put one of the most surreal games in state history in perspective. But that’s what happens when you rush for a state-title game record 515 yards and six touchdowns, yet still lose 70-45 to nemesis Lombard Montini, which was exactly what Isaac did Saturday in the Class 5A championship.

That effort came on just 26 carries, for a solid 19.8 yards per carry, and Isaac's TD runs covered 71, 63, 56, 66, 2 and 69 yards. His defense should probably apologize profusely, as I'm not quite sure how it's possible to lose when your running back RUNS FOR 515 YARDS AND SIX TOUCHDOWNS. Isaac hasn't gotten too deep into the recruiting process yet, but is "high on Michigan" ($, info in header) according to 247Sports, who also have a free feature on the junior from Joliet (IL) Catholic:

Some of the schools that have offered have made an impression on both of Isaac’s parents.

“Notre Dame and Michigan,” Tyrone said. “Not to say they’re at the top of Ty’s list, but I’d have to say those two, and I can see Ty has a high-level of interest in those schools. I ask him and he says Dad, I don’t know yet. I just want him to be as informed as he can. Most of the schools in the Midwest we’ve seen and we’re going to see a lot more places.”

“We have met phenomenal people,” Karen said. “I can’t say there is anyone we met we haven’t liked. People say recruiting is so much fun, and it’s fun, but it can also be overwhelming. I loved the Michigan staff. I love the Notre Dame staff. We had a great visit with the people from Wisconsin. Coach (DeAndre) Smith at Illinois is a great guy. Lester Erb from Iowa is very nice.”

Read the rest and try to figure out how this guy isn't a five-star across the board yet. I can't.

Quickly: WR Laquon Treadwell enjoyed his visit and may be closer to a decision ($, info in header); ditto DB Shaq Wiggins ($, info in header); paywalled articles on 2013 recruits who visited (and of course, liked their visits): Brother Rice LB Jon Reshke, Owensboro (KY) Apollo OL Hunter Bivin, Youngstown (OH) Cardinal Mooney S Marcus McWilson, Dayton (OH) Huber Heights Wayne OL Lovell Peterson, and Hudson (OH) LB Ben Gedeon, who could be making an early decision this summer.

But I love the fact that we're in the running for so many highly rated recruits. I'd love to land the CA trio. They seem to be close and Eric might be able to swing them our way.

What I love about this class in general is that commits are recruiting others. This hasn't happened before in my experience (no to the extent this year anyways)

Defense?  We don't need no stinkin' defense!

Seriously, how can a high school game be 70 - 45?  Although 515 yards is impressive, all those long runs further supports the total lack of defense in that game.  Would love to see the replay of that one.

Ace, this is my 2nd year following recruiting really hard.

If Darboh and Chesson were getting close to a decision, would Hoke and co. use that information to try to get Diggs (who based on the rankings I want more, but what do I know?) to commit first?  Is that something coaches do, or do they just kind of let the kids decide?

Basically, do the coaches have a draft board style list of WRs (and all positions, just WRs because that's the only need now) that they'd like, and keep all of them abreast of the others' decisions?

The coaches certainly have their own list/rankings of recruits, but while they'll let a player know that spots are filling up, they're not going to handcuff a recruiting class by holding out for a player who may or may not commit anyway. With the wideout situation, Michigan has two players who appear ready to commit soon in Darboh and Chesson, while Payton seems to be moving in another direction (or at least taking a long time, and he's by no means a lock now), and Diggs just cut his list to eight teams and doesn't have a visit set. I don't think it would be wise to hold out a spot for Diggs unless there's a clear indication that he's very serious about Michigan. Maybe the Wolverines decide to take three wideouts if they miss out on a guy like Yuri Wright—or Dunn, though I think he ends up in Ann Arbor—but they won't leave themselves high and dry by waiting until signing day for a player who's looking at a lot of schools.

This coaching staff in the past (especially regarding cornerbacks) has shown that they will make players aware that their spot might not be there for long.  So I would not be surprised if they leverage their recruitment of Darboh, Payton, Diggs, and Chesson against each other.

It's kind of a necessary evil in recruiting.  But they would probably take a guy like Diggs at any point, even if it means having to say no to a cornerback or a lineman.

December 1st, 2011 at 12:13 PM ^

The way I see it in regards to the receivers is that the coaching staff is going to take whoever commits first. I would be shocked if Chesson and Darboh didn't get those spots based on their timetables.  Someone like Diggs would be great but you can't just wait around if other players are trying to commit to Michigan.

Honestly, with how many receivers we are losing both this year and next year, I wouldn't mind it if we took all 3.  This year we lose Hemingway, Odoms, and Grady, and next year we lose Roundtree and Stonum, so taking 3 WR wouldn't be a bad option, especially if it is Diggs who takes our final spot.

Diggs is rated higher on defense by some publications.  You could give him a look at WR(like he wants), and switch him if it makes sense.

But I agree...you can't wait  on Diggs, who is a longshot, by bypassing 4* WR recruits.  That would be stupid.

I find it really endearing that Dunn got too nervous to ask Meyer his questions - and that he was willing to admit that in an interview.

A lot of these kids get labeled as prima donnas, but they're really just kids and I'm often impressed by how well they handle these interviews.

I wonder why Jehu is rated only as a 3-star. They guy is 6'3", around 190, and runs a 4.5/40, which is pretty fast for a guy his size. Is he not a great route runner? Sam Webb likes him and thinks he has a lot of upside. I am envisioning an Arrington type of receiver in Chesson. Darboh, Payton, Diggs, Chesson.....any of those two would be a great pick up for Michigan.

I am a little worried about Wright now. I am sure Urban is pulling out the snake oil as we speak. Although we have guys like Countess, who will only get better imo, Avery, and a servicable J.T., it would be nice to get a DB into this year's class, especially someone as talented as Yuri.

msoccer10

December 1st, 2011 at 12:34 PM ^

While I like what I read about Yuri Wright, I think defensive back is way down on my list of priorities right now. We have several freshman who either contributed or will redshirt. Then we have Standifer, a tall cornerback, Terry Richardson, a small but athletic 4 star cornerback and 3 safeties. Some think Clark could play cornerback as well, although I question that because of his height.

So I think Wright is good enough that you accept a commitement from him if we have room, but I would rather take a third wide receiver than a 6th DB.

He hasn't decommitted, but he's been openly visiting other schools for a while (well before RR was hired) and I'd be pretty surprised if he ended up at Arizona. No need to negatively recruit RR, and this staff wouldn't do that anyway—showing McNamara the facilities, school, and next year's depth chart should be just fine.

I like the idea of filling out the class with another OL, CB, the Juco QB and 2 wide outs.  Yeah Dunn seems like a great kid and a phenomenal talent, but he's committed already. If we don't get him, it’s okay because of the immergence of Fitz, Hayes/Rawls sitting in waiting, the '13 crop of RBs looks VERY good.

because you take away his talent from your biggest rival. winning or losing a recruiting battle against buckeyes always doubles the size of the effect, compared to winning or losing a battle agaisnt schools like USC, Alabama or Texas, even Notre Lame.

You don't win a National Title solely on kids from Michigan, or even Ohio. You have to get guys from all over.  But you certainly make your chances for a Big Ten title greater if you can get a local guy who's equal to a guy further away.  The local guys you lose, you end up having to play them more often than not.

Dunn's recruitment also has become symbolic of something bigger.  Even if Meyer isn't crazy about Dunn or isn't sure how he'd use him, he'll work hard to keep Dunn in the OSU class just for perception that it would create.

In other words, Dunn's recruitment now means more than his likely on-the-field contribution.

u.m. (yeah that coach at tsio) has already pick his "star" for 3 of the next 4 years ... and it ain't you.  u.m. says he will run the spread ... and Hoke & Co. is going to the Pro set (post Denard).

Even if you ignore (and please don't) the fact the Urban NEVER has built an offense on a running back ... the only way Bri'onte gets mentioned in the "Heisman talk" is if he's wearing the winged helmet !  Hoke's intent on building a power football roster ... led by big strong offensive and defensive lines.  And simply look at what good coaching can do for a team.  Michigan goes from 108th in scoring defense to 9th and the O-line became much more physical through the year as proven by winning 6 B1G games this year (the same # as the previous 3 years combined).

Now if you want to be mentioned as the "teammate" of tiso's Heisman QB candidate ... well then that is your choice.

Go Blue!

But whereever he ends up, he's probably well on the road to doing well. In an era where Twitter just usually gets people in trouble, of all ages, his weekend tweet was all class.

We may win more some year, or lose more some years, but you have to be proud of the character of the majority of people who come to Michigan.

1. Did Darboh have any Dr. Pepper?  Was that the cause of the real good time?

2. For Jackson hyperbole to go into full effect, you forgot to mention that he will produce successful children that also go on to win the Heisman and then star on both the #1 and #2 most viewed TV shows.

Michigan is the better choice of the two schools. (A) Look at the monster O-line class that is coming in. If those guys really live up to their billing, they will help to turn Dunn into stars. Kalis, Magnuson, Braden, Bars, Garnett/Banner/Diamond (if one of them comes on board). That is a monster ground-eating o-line. After a year or two in the weight room, assuming they develop well, you are looking at a line stacked with NFL prospects. What RB wouldn't want to line up behind a wall like that? (B) This has been said. Meyer is a good coach but runs an offense better suited for smaller shifty backs. I am sure he'll find a way to use Dunn but if Dunn wants to grow into a solid RB and improve his chances for the NFL, Michigan is the better choice. Michigan will run a pro-style offense, built on mammoth o-lines and bruising backs, the type of players you see succeed at the pro level. I am not sure who Meyer plans to bring on-board, but Fred Jackson is a pretty darn good RB coach and has put his share of guys into the NFL. That is something that cannot be ignored.

but I have never felt very confident that Dunn will abandon Ohio.  There are so many reasons to do so--the Tressel firing, the coming NCAA sanctions, the fact Ohio has another highly rated back in the class already, the shift to a different offense--that the fact he remains a commit tells me he is really looking for a reason to stick with his childhood favorite.  Now, if reason can overcome emotion, then he goes to M for the reasons you list.

96goblue00

December 1st, 2011 at 1:23 PM ^

I sense that he is torn but still leaning slightly more towards OSU. Like you said there are many factors - the looming NCAA sanctions, the fact Ohio has another highly rated back in the class already, the shift to a different offense, the fact that his cousin and some close friends committed to Michigan - that scream "GO TO MICHIGAN" but I don't think a lot of 17-year old kids are analyzing it quite as carefully as the fans/gurus. My sense is that many tend to go with the emotional, rather than the practical/rational, choice. There are some kids that are pretty analytical when it come to their choice - writing up lists of pros/cons, analyzing every school from the academics/post-grad job prospects to campus life - but I would wager to say that the majority go with their heart.

We have reached that elite summit where we have more top-level recruits interested in us than we can absorb.  You know, like USC, Texas, Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma.  Those guys.

Think about this for a minute.  Between now and signing day, we will turn away more 4-stars than we will take.

Yeah, I'd say we're back.

How could any parent come away with a positive impression of Brian Kelly and his staff on a personal level? Fine if they think Notre Dame is a good school and offers opportunity for a launching pad to the NFL. But c'mon, don't tell me you're interested in Notre Dame because you think Kelly is a "phenomenal person."

uncleFred

December 1st, 2011 at 2:20 PM ^

Either way we should be fine. Hoke and co are only going after talent that "fits" their system, so a decision based on rational thought is likely to be positive. If the player decides based on emotion, think what it must be like for a 17-18 year old to talk with this years seniors about playing for Hoke, Mattison, and Borges. Now think what it feels like when he talks with those coaches...

Head or heart that kid is looking at joining program and coaches that taught team 132 to play up to, possibly beyond, their absolute potential, and made it possible for them to seize greatness. If the kid sees that and wants it he'll come. If not then, regardless of talent or star rating, Michigan is not the place for him.

I thought Diggs was supposed to come early Dec? If he's not scheduled yet that's not good.

So what's with Reschke not getting an offer yet? It can't be a case where they're worried he'd jump at the offer sooner than they'd like. It would be a drawn out battle with Sparty anyway.
