1/19/2021 – Michigan 87, Maryland 63 – 12-1, 7-1 Big Ten

All right: this one doesn't have a game column, not really. Previous seasons have had actual columns alternating with "this was a basketball game and let's talk about it" posts, because not every basketball game has enough straw to weave an 800-word emotional summary. This year a lack of true cupcakes—plus Oakland's performance in Michigan's only true cupcake game—and a surfeit of storylines have provided plenty of column content.

A 24-point win over Maryland in which Michigan answered the question "what if the previous Maryland game except you reverse the three point shooting?" is the column streak's Waterloo. Hunter Dickinson didn't play in the final 13:11, not because he was playing badly but because Juwan Howard wanted to try some things out. Michigan was plainly superior, just like everyone expected. Big narratives had a nice run.

So let's discuss a basketball game that happened. Maryland, as predicted by anyone with a passing familiarity with either large persons or basketball, doubled the heck out of Hunter Dickinson. This worked if your criteria was "prevent Hunter Dickinson from scoring." It did not work if your criteria was "prevent Michigan from scoring." Dickinson had a 6'8" guy on him and a 6'5" coming to double instead of Minnesota's much longer guys, so he was able to fire out passes to the perimeter without getting them batted and turning the ball over.

What resulted was a Beilein-worthy rain of threes. If the image at the top of the post is "how it started" here's "how it's going":

Michigan's regulars hit 12/21 on shots that mostly ranged from uncontested to all but uncontested. Livers and Brown hit a couple over reasonable opposition. Everything else was wide open. Because of the way things work, Dickinson got credited with one assist while his gravity got Michigan a ton of the second-best shots in basketball.

I mean, look at this.

image

Maryland has two guys on Dickinson and the three other defenders have both feet in the lane. Rarely has the term "gravity" seemed more like a literal force sucking players towards a particular player. Dribble, kick to Mike Smith, thonk, game over, 37 more minutes of basketball.

Maryland blitzes the pick and roll, Maryland tags Dickinson by sagging off Isaiah Livers:

Michigan hit a few more of these than you'd expect but not that many more since 15 of their attempts came from Mike Smith (46% on the season), Isaiah Livers (44%) and Chaundee Brown (39%) and virtually all of them were comfortable standstill catch-and-shoot opportunities. Maryland picked its poison, and then fell over dead.

[After THE JUMP: enraged on Luke Wilson's behalf]

BULLETS

Speaking of hockey assists. How about this Wagner drive and wrap-around to set up a wide open Livers three?

His assists to TOs in Big Ten play: 24:6.

I'm not going to fret about the two point shooting. Maryland hit 53% from two. That's the second consecutive game where the opposition has cracked 50%. Minnesota was slightly concerning; this was just circumstance. Maryland was 7/17 from two in the first half; many of their possessions were desperate attempts to find anything resembling a shot. The Terps had 25 points at halftime and the defense felt exactly that suffocating.

The second half regression is a combination of Kenpom time sapping the will to compete and a heavily rotated lineup featuring just 7 minutes of Dickinson and a lot of Austin Davis trying to check smallball or stretch 5s (which he also did in the first half in a weird guys lineup). Davis's on/off splits from this game are wild:

image

Both teams shot 80%+ from two while he's on the floor. That'll happen when Davis gets matched up against Donta Scott.

Johns pops back up. It seems like every third game one of the takeaways is "if Brandon Johns can just do that consistently, look out." When he does a thing it's like wow, man, that's a thing. His skyhook was a thing:

The rest of his points were mostly being in the right place at the right time but he also hit a 3 that Wagner set up for him. He's 5/8 this year and was a 35% guy last year. His block rate has shot up this year as well.

The other big shooting 70% from the floor [Campredon]

Meanwhile, Johns vs Davis. I thought Michigan's insistence on using Davis in situations where he was a much worse defensive fit than Johns was a little weird. If Maryland's using a small-ball 5 Johns is a much better choice, and I'd prefer Johns against a guy like Jarius Hamilton as well. Davis is a good option in certain matchups—looking down the road he'd be reasonable against either Purdue big, Bezhanishvili, MSU's bigs, OSU bigs—but it feels like Howard is trying to force him into a different shape against some teams. See the above Hoop Lens chart.

So far there's not much to bring this out of the realms of feelingsball. I poked around Hoop Lens trying to see if there was a defensive gap between Johns and Davis but none pops out. Davis does drive a lot more offense than Johns and makes those weird guys lineups more viable on that end.

Meep meep. Mike Smith has this thing where if he sees a defense that's getting back a little lackadaisically he turns on the jets:

That was his only two-point make of the game; he had a couple of other takes to the basket that ended with wild shots and awkward landings. The adjustment to Big Ten play is a long-term process.

Smith can get caught in some ugly situations [Campredon]

Smith is now shooting 62%(!) from 3 in Big Ten play, BTW. Sample size is just 21 but I think our preseason hypothesis that Smith was a top-end shooter obscured by circumstance is looking good.

Franz has got to take a probability class. There was a replay of this Morsell bucket on which Wagner looked upset that Morsell hit this:

You can see it a bit in the sideline view too. That's great defense! And you're up 17-7 even after he hits it! I feel like Wagner is prone to getting frustrated with himself and then withdrawing from the offense a bit. Feels like he's too hard on himself sometimes. This was an example.

On the other hand he hit two tough fadeaways off of his nascent post-up game, so maybe that didn't matter at all.

Morsell loses it. Another Franz incident of note: Daryll Morsell furiously barking at an official that Wagner had hit him in the face, inducing the odd technical situation where Morsell gets a tech, Turgeon gets a tech, someone on the Michigan bench gets a tech, and free throws are 2-2.

Just like the previous incident, replays of the event don't really show anything:

Morsell had jumped up and down hitting his own arm after getting blocked by Livers earlier in the game and was likely to end up in the penalty box on any further ref questioning. I wonder what happened on the Michigan end to even up the FTs.

Zeb watch. Another eight minutes for Jackson in this game even with Brooks available, and a few of those were in the first half. He managed a nice pick and roll assist to Davis:

He also missed another couple of three-point attempts. He's now 0/9 on the season. He seems like he's got the green light so maybe he's making them at a decent clip in practice?

Pandemic silver lining. Without an empty arena we would not have been able to hear Michigan's bench react to Luke Wilson picking up a questionable foul. The disgusted "ooooooohhhhhhh" is the funniest moment of the year.

Excited to see a headband guy get into the Kenpom Kids.

Michigan did get 4 free throws on the technical foul exchange.  Livers hit all four.  The announcers were a bit behind on what was going on.

(edit: beat me to it)
Small thing: the free throws weren't even after the technicals. Livers shot 4.

There has been a HEATED debate over at UMHoops on the Davis vs. Johns minutes regarding how many there should even be when Dickinson isn't on the court and also which one makes more sense.  Most people don't want to see Davis at all.

The most logical point that's been made in that debate is that it is a question of making physical mistakes (Davis) versus mental mistakes (Johns).  Davis is very limited athletically and often looks bad on defense....but he knows what he's supposed to do.  Johns will go stretches where he looks lost and unsure of what his role is....but he is clearly a more talented player that oozes potential.

Last night was a perfect game to mess around with those two and Zeb in a game that wasn't at risk.  I did worry that Dickinson got too much bench time in the first half and Juwan does seem to love Davis more than his on-court performance warrants.

Last night was a perfect example of when Davis being on the floor is great. Maryland is objectively undersized and chose to double Dickinson, but not Davis. I think Juwan was willing to give up a little bit on defense to give Davis 1v1 mismatches in the post and it worked out pretty damn well. I think Davis and Johns are both fine back up center options and both can be advantageous in certain situations and against certain teams. Johns is definitely more versatile, but Davis definitely has his niche that he fills well

I agree that it was fine to have Davis out there quite a bit last night. A lot of people are upset about lack of minutes for Dickinson, but I think Juwan is doing his best to make sure that Dickinson does not hit a typical freshmen fade late in the season. There is no reason to log more minutes than necessary for a big man like Dickinson. Save him now for the tournament later.

There are worse things than trading buckets when you have a big lead, and eating minutes off the clock.  Plus it is fun to watch!

I like that Dickinson got to play fewer minutes.  Again, the game was not in question--he wasn't really needed, in other words.  With a big game coming up, he should be well rested.  Also, it promotes the team concept--not that this seems to be a problem with this team.  The write-ups were perfect...you don't have to score to help the team, just take up two defenders and let your teammates rain threes.

I do like to see Johns get more minutes, though, to help his confidence and development, and improve the team down the road.

Funny, because i have found myself going back and forth in regards to those 2 the entire season.  They both frustrate the shit out of me at times for different reasons.  And the Umhoops board seems to have nailed it in regards to their differences.

I just keep chalking it up to - depends what center is playing at that time for the other team.

But man, Johns SHOULD be better than he is.  When Johns was on his way to Michigan, and Livers just finished his freshmen year, i thought when Livers was a senior and Johns was a junior, Johns would definitely be the better player.  It isn't even close, in the other direction.

I see some similarities between Brandon Johns and Craig Roh. Both got unexpectedly moved to and from new positions during the early years of their career. Bouncing between the 4 and the 5 probably slowed Johns' development. Every time he started to get his bearings, he was off to a different position with new responsibilities.

Dylan and the other brilliant arm chair quarterbacks at UMHoops have been questioning Howard’s lineups and substitution patterns for two years running. Meanwhile, Juwan and staff have blended 4 freshmen and two transfers into a balanced team that gets after it on both ends of the court, are currently 12-1 and ranked 4th on Kenpom. I think I will trust in coach Howard and sit back and enjoy the ride.

Davis was 4-5 from the floor with a steal, a block and only 1 turnover in 10 minutes.  How can anyone complain about that?  Yeah he isn't quick enough to guard outside.  He's shooting 70% from the field.  Anyone who shoots 70% is worth playing for some minutes.

Johns also played well, and is shooting 66% on the year with the added threat of 3-point shooting.

I see room to use them both.

This. So much criticism by the fans and media is so uninformed. As I was telling my grandson today. I truly admire what Juwan is doing here. As a coach I surely pushed the envelope by putting the ball in my kids' hands and letting them play the game as we coached it. But wow-here, Juwan is something else. I deeply appreciate his concepts...I just didn't/wouldn't have the guts to do what he is doing. I am ecstatic seeing him make it work. Juwan is informed by a rich experience. At least 75% of the criticism in these regards is firmly based in ignorance. Sit back and enjoy watching this man and his staff coach this wonderful game-they're doing one hell of a job.

Hence the title of this write up, teams moving forward are really going to have to pick their poison with Dickinson. You either trust your center one-on-one with Dickinson and he makes probably 60%-70% of his shots or you double him and let a 7'1" elite passer find an open shooter. Not many teams have the combination of lengthy wings and legit center that Minnesota has so I feel pretty good going forward about the opposing team choosing either option

I think I remember another Smith meep meep which he started right after he paused to tuck his shirt in.  It looked to me like he was lulling the defense to sleep by doing that, then immediately took off at full speed.

That was spectacular offense. I believe he rifled a pass to Livers for a three-he had a defender making a run at him so he passed to, I believe, Wagner who buried a three. And Michigan demonstrated this sort of execution time after time in this game.

Otherwise, the OP is well-titled and this team is increasingly going to force defenses to pick their poison. Though I must say, the continued nit-picking is astounding. Brian, here you give us "exhibit A" with consecutive sentences about Smith-saying that learning to adjust to B1G paly is a long process then noting that he is shooting 62%...what the hell...so is the cut-off for adjusting well hitting 62.1%??? Evidently the fact that perfection is never going to be achieved is not well understood.

It’s not really a sky hook. Byington calls it a jump hook which is a better description. Skyhook I want his body between the defender and the ball, almost going over his head. Johns turn his shoulders and is pretty square to the basket.

RE: Davis / Johns and the weird lineups. I saw this as getting Davis' game conditioning back up to speed by playing him more. I would think (hope?) that Juwan knows the most appropriate situations to plays Johns and Davis, and he was just trying to get Davis some extra run.

RE: Zeb -- eh, I just really don't like his jacking 3-balls pretty much whenever he gets a reasonably open look. It's hero ball that we don't need, but I guess we have to live with it, since Juwan is clearly trying to acclimatize him to game action so that he's a viable piece later this season. But Zeb, hey, just calm down. Play within the offense, and you'll get yours. And if you don't, that's okay -- this team doesn't seem to be about individual stats anyway, and that's one of the things that makes it great.

Interesting comp of the Maryland strategy on HD to Minn and the difference between the two.  Makes me think Minn is a good tune-up for Baylor, who looks like a better shooting Minn.

Lots of basketball to play, but I like this team's chance to make a deep run so I'm watching more other conference ball earlier than usual.

And Baylor looks good.  Real good.  The rest of the xii may be real bad, though.

In previous game Morsell was hit by Wagner on his initial dribble to the basket and before he started to go up for the shot. Look for the contact from Wagner's right elbow as Wagner is going back towards basket.

re the silver lining of being able to hear stuff from the court: there was a clearly audible and hilarious "oh shit" from an out-of-position Terp on a kick-out pass from the low post to a wide open Livers(?) on one of those easy threes.
