Three New Offers

After seeing coveted four-star 2015 IN LB Josh Barajas make a surprise commitment to Penn State a couple weeks ago, Michigan didn't wait long to offer two more four-star Hoosier State linebackers: Darrin Kirkland Jr. and Asmar Bilal. Brandon has the full rundown on both of those offers, as well as a third that went out over the weekend to 2016 WI OT Ben Bredeson, who's expected to be one of the top-ranked linemen in his class.

While the recruitments of Bilal and (especially) Bredeson should take a while to play out, Kirkland plans to announce his decision on May 30th, and his top group is murky; Penn State and Tennessee appear to stand out along with Michigan among schools that have offered him, and his 247 predictions are all over the place. Kirkland told Brandon he may make another trip to Ann Arbor before his decision. If he does, I like Michigan's chances of landing him; if not, it's quite possible James Franklin continues to tear up the recruiting scene.

Spring Game Visitor Reactions

2016 MI ATH Daelin Hayes has been on campus several times, but the spring game represented his first Michigan visit as an offered prospect after receiving one on his last trip to Ann Arbor in March. He got the full academic tour with his mother, a long-time employee of the Detroit Public Schools, who raved about Michigan's academic in Sam Webb's DetNews feature on her son:

Neal added: “I like Michigan State also. I like the staff there. I do like their facilities and their academic program. But in terms of their network that you build, they have the MPACT (Michigan Professional and Career Transition) program at the University of Michigan where they bring in folks that have already graduated just to share with the young men about future opportunities and career choices. I think that is an experience that is second to none.

The full article is well worth a read. Hayes claimed no leaders and had good things to say about both in-state schools; he also said that the quality of his degree is "going to be the biggest thing" in his decision-making process. Michigan has to overcome the fact that MSU offered Hayes first and has a long-time connection with him in Curtis Blackwell (the MaxEx 7-on-7 coach turned recruiting coordinator); the emphasis on academics from Hayes and his mother may do just that and more.

A visit to the spring game was part of a Midwest trip for four-star MO TE Hale Hentges, one that also took him to MSU and OSU. After positive experiences at all three schools, he told Scout's Derek Young that he's had to rethink his timeline ($):

The four-star from Missouri had intended on releasing a final group within the week and making his college choice soon afterwards. That may no longer be the case.

"The three visits to Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State definitely kind of shook up my top group," Hentges admitted. "I enjoyed seeing all three programs. It really put those three schools squarely in my mind. It did well for all of them as I get closer to making my choice."

"I might need to make another visit before I go any further," he continued. "I plan on taking visits back to Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State. I'm not sure if I'll be ready to release my final list anymore. It could be a while before I make my decision."

A second visit should put Michigan squarely into consideration if they aren't there already. There were very positive vibes after the Ohio State visit, so the Wolverines may have some catching up to do against their biggest rival.

Three-star AZ QB Brian Lewerke visited both Michigan State, which offered him last month, and Michigan (no offer) over the weekend; he told Scout's Eric Rutter that if the Wolverines want him, they must act fast ($):

“Definitely within the next month or so,” said Lewerke. “That’s probably my timeline. I will probably have committed to a school before [Michigan’s] camp, so I probably won’t be going to any school camps. I might go to some recruiting camps like some Elite 11 things.”

Lewerke hasn't been mentioned before as a quarterback under serious consideration, and if Michigan doesn't get to see him throw I highly doubt he gets an offer—since he's not coming to camp barring a change in plans, it's safe to assume we won't hear much more from him.

Jenkins Down To 2; Commence Snake-Oiling?

Early in his recruitment, it looked like Michigan was right at the top of the list for four-star PA OT Sterling Jenkins. The Wolverines have heavily pursued other offensive tackles in the last couple months, however, and now it's apparent why: per Rivals's Adam Friedman, Jenkins has cut his list down to just Penn State and Ohio State ($).

That leaves Michigan in a tough position, as all the offensive tackles they've offered have either committed elsewhere or seem to be leaning in other directions—FL OT Jake Fruhmorgen seems like their best shot and Clemson will be tough to beat for him.

There happens to be a four-star prospect in Michigan's backyard, however, in Detroit King OT Kyonta Stallworth, a current Michigan State commit. He's kept a low profile since his commitment and hasn't indicated he's wavering; he's also made a couple appearances in Ann Arbor:

We'll see if anything materializes here; if Fruhmorgen commits elsewhere, I'd expect Stallworth isn't far down the list of tackles Michigan would offer next.

Etc.

2015 TX (via CA) dual-threat QB Kevin Dillman was under consideration for a Michigan offer back when Al Borges was the offensive coordinator; in the last few months, his ratings have plummeted (he's gone from a five-star to a three-star on the 247 Composite), and it didn't look like a Wolverine offer would materialize. Dillman committed to Nebraska on Saturday, so you can cross another possibility off of Michigan's quarterback board.

can someone give a good reason why he's plummeted on 247 Composite so much without actually playing any football that I know of? Wasn't he still highly rated back in just February?

All the sites redid their rankings after the season and people have been saying for months that Dillman wasn't anywhere near that 5 star rating this past season.  Fans here have been second guessing the coaches for not offering a 5 star who was very interested and dismissing the criticism that Dillman wasn't that good.

The delay in updating the 2015 rankings is probably because sites were focusing on 2014 all star games and 2014 signing day.  After that they went back and redid the 2015 rankings.  In years past, there weren't even any junior rankings until spring of their junior year, but last year 247 shook things up.

Michigan fans have been overrating Dillman for a while, in my opinion. I'm not sure why so many fans are in love with him, but my guess is that it's because he was a 5-star athlete. If you actually watch his film, it's not that impressive.

Seems like this class we are doing all the right things trying to garner the top recruits.

However, we seem to be fighting an uphill battle as the top guys are committing elsewhere and we are scratching around to try to get back into it with other guys on the ordered list, but we seem to be late to the party there too, as a result.

I recognize this is a really small class with only like 1 player per position group, so its important to not just offer the world and see who commits first.  I also recognize I'm a couch coach who doesn't recruit anyone.

That said, I feel that its going to be important to notch up some Ws this fall.  In the Hoke era, that seemed to be the biggest draw, that we had a really successful season in '11 and we had a large number of recruits.

Franklin at PSU seems to be lighting the trail on fire, as far as recruiting.  That could be interesting going forward.  I know he had some great guys at Vandy and it showed when they were tearing up the Goliaths of that league with astonishing regularity.

Hopefully we can "recruit" Lindsay for the fall as well.  It can only be positive.

By tearing up the Goliaths of the SEC was he referencing Vanderbilt's

56-24 loss to Texas A&M

35-25 loss to South Carolina

or the "moral victory" of the 39-35 loss in the Season Opener to Ole Miss?

That team gets crushed by LSU or Alabama.

James Franklin coaching genius my ass. Schedule benificiary, absolutely.

will help with recruiting. If we would have won the B1G last season we would have had Hand and a number of other recruits who slipped away.

The coaches may just have try to get the best recruit they can. But once we start winning 10 more games a year then the top recruits will return in groves.

Any reactions from Lindsay (the former AL center?). Also, what's his timeline to make a decision, both in terms of his personal timeline and general timeline for grad transfers(i.e. is there a NSD equivalent)?

I no longer believe any talk of "academics" being relevant to a recruit. Unless they are a kicker, walkon, or deciding between otherwise two identical schools.

Hopefully im wrong and just bitter.

Michigan fans read the word "academics," and a lot of them just start hearing what they want to hear.

They think along the lines of "well, some list on some website says Michigan's academics are better than School X's academics, and the kid said academics are important, therefore, the kid either picks Michigan or he's a stinking liar who isn't interested in academics at all."

Makes perfect sense.

But a kid pointing to academics can mean a lot of things beyond some ranking that says they are best here or there. It can mean offering his major. Or Michigan could have his major, but it would be nearly impossible for him to get into it, so he goes to the school where he can get into it. That's a good decision based on acadmics, right? Or it could just mean that he likes the way another school has its tutoring program set up. Or it could mean that he likes that another school has smaller class sizes and more personal attention from the professor. Or it could mean liking the way specific academic programs are set up in terms of course requirements and scheduling over four years. It could mean liking the academic facilities.

Basically, a kid saying that "academics are important" can mean a lot of different things beyond just "I am going to the school that the U.S. News and World Report said I should go to."

Visiting Nuss and checking out Michigan.  I think he has 3 or 4 more schools to visit. But hopefully he will pick Michigan because, 1.) He knows Nuss and 2.) He knows Nuss system and will most likely start. The only down side to the visit is he may have come away thinking that Michigan's OL is a real tire fire and wants nothing to do with it. That is my only worry. But, I think it is a 70/30 chance he will transfer here.

I think he's going to be a great OG. And with Swenson and likely Lukasa and Price and other potential OTs coming in next year (and with 2 OTs taken last year), I'm more than ok with another guard.

how unbalanced our recruiting is.  The coaches stress the importance of line play and we're striking out on linemen yet loaded at RB, CB and WR even though we haven't had someone drafted from one of those positions since. . . gosh, I can't remember.

That's enough time?  Those guys were RS freshmen and true freshmen last fall (and technically still are).  You think that's enough time to develop them?  A lot of top OL don't see the field yet by their RS frosh season, and when they do they often aren't very good.

Lewan wasn't a starter until midway through his RS frosh year, and wasn't all that good.  But our OL also had Schilling and Molk, and a couple other experienced guys so he wasn't so glaring.

I don't really see Stallworth as an offensive tackle. He's too short, in my opinion. He's probably a guard or a defensive tackle.

While playing different games you can find the players using hat and cap to protect themselves from heavy sun light as well as for a uniqueness in their team. Branding is a effect that provides some very special type of additional points to the people in a positive way. According to me it is really interesting and it can be changed with the positive views of different players. If you want to know about the different model of hats and caps can get from the below link. Custom Embroidered Hats
