Things Fall Apart

Is Darrin Kirkland the next to go?

Since last week's roundup, Darian Roseboro officially decommitted from Michigan, bringing the 2015 class down to just ten players. In distressing, but by no means surprising, news, that class is likely to get smaller before it gets any bigger, as several other commits are now looking around.

Four-star LB Darrin Kirkland Jr. took an official visit to Notre Dame over the weekend, and he told TomVH that Michigan's coaching staff is now taking a different approach to commits taking visits ($):

In the past, the Michigan coaches have held a no-visit policy, but Kirkland had a different conversation when he told the staff of his intentions.

"They said take the time that you need to make the best decision," he said.

If the coaches hope to keep any semblance of a class together, I don't think they have a choice here. So, Kirkland visited Notre Dame with Hoke's approval, and in a rather painful twist took in the game with former M commit Shaun Crawford; Kirkland told Rivals' Josh Helmholdt he came away impressed with ND ($):

Saturday's visit to Notre Dame has given Kirkland plenty to think about as he enters the final four months of his recruitment.

"I'm just taking it one day at a time," Kirkland said. "I'm staying close with my family and hopefully we can make the best decision for me. At the end of the day I'll sign my letter of intent where I feel most comfortable at."

Kirkland remains committed to Michigan and is not sure what schools he could visit in the future, but he is keeping his options open.

I'd be surprised if M held on to Kirkland through a coaching change.

Of course, Kirkland isn't the only one looking around. 247's Steve Lorenz posted an overview of where the commits stand at the moment, and only four appear to be locks to stay committed ($):

  • Quarterback Alex Malzone, who's still been recruiting other prospects like Marcus Lewis and Auden Tate, per Sam Webb ($). Malzone is also working hard to try to keep the class together.
  • Offensive tackle Grant Newsome, who doubled down on his "I didn't not commit to the University of Brady Hoke" statement from last week by telling GBW's Kyle Bogenschutz he's "fully committed" to Michigan.
  • Offensive guard Jon Runyan Jr.—as a legacy commit, it'd be quite surprising if he even looked around.
  • Kicker Andrew David, who received a scholarship as a kicker at an early juncture, so he's also quite solid in all likelihood.

Everyone else—including RB Mike Weber, per The Wolverine's Brandon Brown($)—is at least considering other options, and among that group of six only Tyree Kinnel seems like he's still leaning heavily towards remaining in the class. As TE commit Chris Clark told MLive last week, coaches from around the country know an opportunity when they see one:

"I think they see an opening," Clark said. "They smell the blood in the water."

Clark recently added a USC offer and is fielding heavy interest from Alabama and UNC, among many others. He also seems like a longshot to stay in the class for much longer.

Meanwhile, in the 2016 class, four-star QB Messiah deWeaver maintains he's still "100 percent to Michigan," per Helmholdt ($). I haven't seen word on M's other 2016 commit, four-star OT Erik Swenson, but his commitment seemed rock-solid; hopefully that doesn't change.

[Hit THE JUMP for the latest on this weekend's visitors, Keisean Lucier-South, Auden Tate, Thiyo Lukusa, and more.]

Visit Weekend Falling Apart?

This weekend's Penn State game was supposed to be a huge one from a recruiting standpoint, but given the current state of the program it's not going as initially hoped. Two players who had planned official visits for this weekend, four-star CA OT Zach Robertson and three-star FL ATH Javarius Davis, have already cancelled, per Lorenz (Robertson link here; Davis here, both $).

As of last week, at least Michigan's most-hyped visitor—five-star CA WDE Keisean Lucier-South—still planned to take his official for the PSU game, but he also told Rivals' Adam Gorney that an in-state school had made a big move in his recruitment ($):

The Orange (Calif.) Lutheran five-star outside linebacker settled on UCLA, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon and Florida but the USC coaching staff did not give up recruiting him.

That was an incredibly wise move from the Trojans because Lucier-South said Monday night that he really appreciates their efforts and now USC is back on his list.

"They kept recruiting me even when I took them off the list and I respect that a lot and I love what they're doing over there," Lucier-South said.

I don't believe tea leaves are necessary to decipher that this isn't trending well for Michigan.

Etc.

Also from last week and hopefully still relevant: four-star WR and Florida State commit Auden Tate told Lorenz he still "10000%" plans to take an official visit to Ann Arbor, most likely for the Maryland game ($).

Four-star 2016 in-state OT Thiyo Lukusa, who planned to make a decison by December 1st, told The Wolverine's Brandon Brown that the situation at Michigan might delay that timeline ($):

"I love the guys at Michigan now and for [the coaches] to be gone would be huge," he admitted. "It's just a big deal to me. I've built a strong relationship with a lot of them. I've heard for a while now that they might not be there and other things like that. If they were to go I'd probably have to postpone my decision and see what's going on with Michigan. It's a crazy thing."

At least he's willing to wait? Regardless, this isn't looking nearly as good for M as it did a couple months ago.

Happy trails to 2016 five-star OT Tommy Kraemer, who committed to Notre Dame over the weekend.

This is clearly about to become my least favorite front page post of the week if it hasn't already.  No offense to Ace - just so damn depressing.

And people continue to post crap about Rich's horrible 2010 class.  They are about to get a very big reminder on why recruiting always sucks when the HC is dead man walking.

..developing talent is the issue.

The current M players were all rated highly by a huge number of external scouts based on their performance amongst other highly rated recruits.....they can't all be wrong. You don't get to 4-5 star status, or even 3 star for that matter, by accident.

The problem is that players are not progressing under the current coaching regime from highly touted high school players to being highly productive college players and that is evident quite literally everywhere on the field for M right now.

My other concern is that Hoke is recruiting guys to fit his archaic style of football that wont mesh with what the new coach needs.  I've said before, I think this team is seriously lacking anyone with big play potential.  I worry that Hoke is obsessed with recruiting these lumbering runningbacks and wide recievers who lack big play potential.

deWeaver had a pretty good line this past Friday against the Yellow Jackets of Sidney. He went 13-21 for 218 and 5 TDs. Trotwood won the game 80-21.

Just throwing that out there and thought this place would be a good place to do so instead of starting the 5 millionth thread of the week.

Most have felt that recruiting is one of the things Hoke could hang his hat on, but we all knew if the results on the field didn't start to get better, then the recruiting probably was going to drop off.  The results on the field have gotten worse and look, recruiting is starting to fall off.

No doubt, results have impacted recruiting.  But you can't ignore the massive outpouring of rage over the state of the program, the calls for firingof both the coaches and athletic director, and the complaints about the failure to develop talent.  Losses you can sometimes understand; but the meltdown this year would lead any but the bluest of blue recruits to at least re-think his decision.

October 6th, 2014 at 2:25 PM ^

We are in a very unique position.  Usually coaches wwho get fired are not so obvious in week 4, 5, 6.  So they can talk to their recruits as if they are coming back - actually believing that - until late in the season i.e. weeks 10-11-12.  So that is 6-7 less weeks for recruits to look around and visit other team's games and such.

In our current situation, Hoke has to pretend he will be the coach here for 2 full months and then whatever time it takes to get a new coach in here is going to be 2.5-3 months of dead air time.  That is almost unheard of.  Your coach is not usually toast the first week of October.

Mpfnfu Ford

October 6th, 2014 at 7:48 PM ^

Well, I think there's usually one to two coaches a year where it's obvious this early, but those guys get fired during the year, like our old friend Charlie did, or Kiffin last season. I cannot remember a time where there was a coach who so obviously needed to be fired during the year who can't be. The whole Brandon AD mess is just looming over everything.

I really believe you are correct and touched on what is so horribly wrong with this team right now. I do NOT see any fire or excitement in this team. Give me a bunch of 2 star talent with determined play over 4/5 star talent with care-free attitudes. And I will be the first to say what needs to be said...the coaches are not all to blame for this team's horrible performance. The players, and they are not freaking kids, have given less than admirable effort.

October 6th, 2014 at 3:37 PM ^

Just because the team is not good at football does not mean they do not have fire.  What part of Bunting diving for a one handed catch, J. Lewis making amazing plays at CB, and the team's overall demeanor as it took the field (especially in the 4th quarter) looked 'listless'?  I've rarely seen a RB run harder than Smith did last game.  Devin makes mistakes, but a lack of 'giving his all' is not among them.  J. "Mother Fucking Doesn't Care" Ryan sure is lethargic out there.  D. Norfleet sure looks timid when he runs as fast as he can into a 250 pound linebacker.  Frank Clark's problem was "overpursuit" the opposite of your claim.  Most of last game's mistakes were primarily at DB, where players with a lot of heart and not enough talent were asked to do too much (e.g. Countess).  It could very well be that the CBs are not coached well too, but it is not due to a lack of effort or 'fire'.  Countess and Taylor play their hearts out.

I can also cite several plays in which I perceived players giving up on a play, but I am talking about the season as a whole.  The one play in which no one has made any comment was from the Minnesota game when Morris was illegally drilled.  How many players came to his defense.....not one!!!!  I  am not encouraging players to fight, but at least that would show they gave a crap about each other and had some fire.  Coaches don't catch balls, block, tackle and run.  So what is it?   Not enough practice time?  Practicing the wrong drill?  Maybe Hoke can't motivate these young men.  It is very telling that this is the fist time in forever that team captains were not named.

presumably anyone we bring in as next HC will be a major upgrade.  Hard to understand why a coaching change in and of itself would cause a guy to de-commit especially if that next HC is a proven winner.

I loved this weekly update, well for several reasons;

1. It helped me build out recruits for College Football dynasty years (UM hasn't lost a game in 400 straight years and counting on my PS)

2. It was always exciting to see the process unfold...the drama of contact to top5 to final team was exiciting, especially as we won some great recruits

3. It offers nothing but optimisim to next year

But now this has become the section I read weekly while holding my breath...Every update seems to bring up more fear of loss...

Can you just put pictures of carebears oy my little ponies up for any recruit you are discussing that we are going to lose, help soften the blow?

Ace, you are a pro.  Thanks for keeping up your standards, no way this could have been easy to do right now.  I personally am not real interested. Glanced through it because I am an idiot.

But many readers here still want to see it.  Keep up great work, but can't wait until recruiting updates start in December/January those are gonna be "must reads"

Not that I think he will come here, but would a big name hire like Harbaugh bring some of these guys back? I know the recruits build a relationship with the coaching staff, but presumably they were favorably impressed by aspects of the University which would persist through a coaching change. I would think a big name hire might make us more attractive.

October 6th, 2014 at 3:26 PM ^

Agree...its always more positive than originally thought when the new coach is finally named. At this point, any new coach is a no face, unnamed person so of course no all the recruits think they will go elsewhere if a new coach is named.

October 6th, 2014 at 4:50 PM ^

Without a doubt there will be intense interest on not only those to re-commit, but we may find a rush over the very few remaining spots from other highly rated recruits.

I know this is wishful thinking -- but I can't believe having a Harbaugh will not have an immediate impact on major recruits from coast-to-coast.  And a few nervous college programs trying to hang on to some last minute decision makers.

Would be nice to watch the high school all-star games and see a few Michigan hats picked up!

I'd be nice if people showed up for our game on Saturday. Our fair weather fans are bound to not go to this Saturday's Under the Lights game. What kind of message does that send? The message it would send to recruits is devastating. If you want to resurect this program support your school, your team, your players and yes - your coaches - until they are no longer at the helm.

WolvinLA2

October 6th, 2014 at 3:44 PM ^

Never? If your fandom is tied to the team's success, then that is a fair weather fan, in my opinion. I love Michigan and I love football. At no point will I stop watching the games. This is not meant to be a fandom contest, but some people give up on their team when they're bad and others don't. Decide which group you want to be in.

AnthonyThomas

October 8th, 2014 at 6:41 AM ^

Yes, of course, the fanbase's core has been "fair-weather" for the last seven years. For sure.

Oh wait, the team has had one good season in that span of time. Sometimes people become upset when the thing they love so much and invest so much in is run repeatedly into the ground.

But keep showing up and giving your time and money to the imbeciles who have made this mess. Be sure to say that you're doing it because you "support the players" and not becuase you want to be entertained. The same reason you regularly go to cross country meets and field hockey games, I'm sure.

Any recruit who looks in the stands and bases any part of their decision to come to M is crazy.

Lets think of the more important factors:

- Who the FuCk is gonna coach me next year?

- What offense/defense will I be in?

- How said offense/defense get me to the pro's?

- What other guys are coming in with me?

These are just a few that are much bigger impacts to a recuits decision.

mGrowOld

October 6th, 2014 at 3:38 PM ^

That's what I used to think too.  As a matter of fact - back when i actually DID some recruiting for Michigan here in northern Ohio those were exactly the type of questions most recruits seemed to foolishly think were important.

But lately I've learned here on the board that the REAL reason kids pick a school is based on season ticket holder renewals and the number of people in the stands on gameday.  I think if I could do it all over again I'd simply answer any question a prospect might have by pointing out our Saturday attendance numbers or the number of season ticket renewals we recieved.  Now THAT would surely get them to commit - not that other nonsense about coaches, schemes, pro-prospects and such.

I just cannot agree with this attitude. Why would you support a sub-standard product? Why is it wrong to want to spend your Saturday doing something more enjoyable than watching one of your favorite teams lose again?

Spending 4+ hours of your Saturday, one of the few days most people have off of work, driving to, watching and than driving home from a Michigan football game to watch a team drop to 2 and 5 does not make you a better fan. Sports are a hobby, a luxury item, if people would rather spend their time doing something more enjoyable than watching Michigan football it does not give you the right to criticize their fan credentials and call them fair weather.

People showing up to the game will not magically help resurect this program. If that were the case why has the program cratered with the great fan interest we have had over the last 7 years? I could argue people continuing to show up regardless of the product on the field actually makes it less likely we see improvement, but I don't understand how people claim fan support will somehow create improvement for this team and this program. An improved team creates increased fan support, not the other way around.

WolvinLA2

If you don't want to watch Michigan when they aren't winning, that is up to you. But if that doesn't make you a fair weather fan, then what does? Does that idea just not exist to you? I'm a fair weather Pistons fan. I really don't watch or follow them much outside of checking the standings when they aren't good. I dont love them enough to watch them lose. However, I watched or listened to every Tigers game that season they lost 119 games. Being a fair weather Michigan fan doesn't make you a bad person or anything. But you can't say "I'm not going to support a team this bad" and "I'm not a fair weather fan" in the same breath.

J.Madrox

October 6th, 2014 at 4:47 PM ^

I appreciate the reasonable and measured response WolvinLA2. I probably wasn't as clear as I wanted to be about my main point.

If you just completely tune out any interest in a team that is doing poorly that makes you a fair weather fan. But I feel there are different levels or ways to support a team, going to the game can be a huge time commitment if you aren't going to enjoy it. A lot of the people around here who say they won't watch the games still go on MGoBlog and still follow the team if not watch every minute of every game like they would if the team was good.

In addition I just feel like to many people throw out the term fair weather fan like it is some kind of insult or it somehow makes them a better person that they watch all the games of teams that suck. I remember watching just about evrey game when the Tigers lost 119 as well, but that doesn't mean I am somehow a better fan because I am obsessed enough to do that.

Again, I realize you said doing it doesn't make you a bad person, and I appreciate the civil discourse, I just feel to many people use it as some kind of badge of honor. In addition I don't believe fan support has any influence on the state of the team or program, if that were the case how is Michigan or a place like Texas ever bad with all the crazy fans they have.

...because these kids deserve your support. Put your own college age kid in their position. Are you going to say that you are going to mow lawn instead of going to the game because they aren't likely to win. They knock their heads around for years and represent our great university. Watch them, win or lose...it's like a marriage, through good times and bad. When it all comes together, you will be glad you did. Keep the heat on BrandOn, support the kids and Go Blue!
