Michigan Releases Stake Statement
WE CLAIM THIS FIELD IN THE NAME OF COMMITMENT AND HARD-TO-SEE OBJECTS
This is a real thing.
October 26, 2014
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Below is a statement from University of Michigan head football coach Brady Hoke:
“I want to publicly apologize to Coach Dantonio as well as the players and supporters of Michigan State for our act of poor sportsmanship displayed pre-game yesterday. I spoke with Mark earlier today and expressed to him that we meant no disrespect to his team. During our regular Friday night team meeting, one of the topics presented to motivate our team was a history lesson addressing commitment and teamwork in a tough environment. A tent stake was presented to the team as a symbol of this concept. The stake was brought into our locker room as a visual reminder, and one of our team leaders chose to take it out on the field. As the leader of our football program, I take full responsibility for the actions of our team. We believe in displaying a high level of respect at the University of Michigan and unfortunately that was not reflected by this action prior to kickoff.”
We're very sorry a thing meant to be driven into a field was driven into your field.

MSU ran like all run play except for like 2-3 the 2nd half. We couldn't stop them. They were running the same plays back to back at times.
IMO, they did take it easy on us. If they are fighting for a spot in the playoffs, they should have run up the score as much as possible.
MSU didn't look sharp yesterday, but the game was never in doubt from the start (nearly literally).
October 26th, 2014 at 5:21 PM ^
They didn't run the same plays during the last drive. When you get to about 30 seconds left and you can take a knee like 99 percent of coaches will then I won't respect the coach.
October 26th, 2014 at 5:22 PM ^
Only thing to make this worse would be if Bolden had broke his hand.
October 26th, 2014 at 5:31 PM ^
It sure reads like something we've seen from the President's Office.
Does not look anthing like the verbiage we've seen from the Athletic Department.
October 26th, 2014 at 5:30 PM ^
The rule of gamesmanship is you take a knee if you don't have to run a play. They went for the touchdown which reinforces the fact that they are dicks. I like it. I have always hated their school and I like they they aren't classy.

I like winning with grace and class, and it bothers me when others don't to it (though when rivals do it it makes it easier to hate them)
You don't like the stake thing? Fine. Win the game. You did that. Convincingly. And then all you'd have to say about it is "scoreboard".
Or you could be retaliatory dicks and go for a meaningless touchdown to "send a message". Good for you. Did that make you feel better, MSU? I bet it did.
October 26th, 2014 at 5:31 PM ^
Coaches do some cliche pep talk. Players get the absolute wrong message out of it and embarass themselves. The idiots are running the asylum.

The "Chief Osceola" character did not plant a spear into the turf at Michigan Stadium before the 1991 game in Ann Arbor.

I think they only do the spear routine for home games and for big neutral site games. I don't know why they don't do that on the road. It might be because they don't want to be disrespectful to the home team (especially the teams with artificial turf).

this whole thing was stupid. stupid of the players to utilize such a ridiculous act in the first place. it's one thing if both of your teams are good, and this is expected to be a close game. but, when you're team is finding new and interesting ways to lose other bad teams week in and week out, do you really need to give the team that everyone expects to beat your face in any more of a reason to give you such a beating? stupid of Hoke and his staff for once again exhibiting how little control they have over their players and their actions. stupid of Dantonio to get pissy about it after his boys planted a flag in Notre Dame's turf a few years ago. and stupid of Hoke again to come out like a sniffling baby by apologizing in such a way. there is just too much dumb in this whole football season.
October 26th, 2014 at 6:39 PM ^
1. The flag planting at ND was in 2005 under JLS. Dantonio's teams have never done it.
2. ND players planted a flag in the visitors' corner at MSU in 2004.
3. ND did not bring the megaphone trophy to the 2005 game, so the MSU players didn't have the tropy to celebrate with.
I hope that helps.

a stake placed in Hoke's coaching coffin. He will not be coaching here next season. Hopefully this will help to take out Brandon as well. Hoke and Brandon have turned us into an embarrassment both on and off the field.
October 26th, 2014 at 6:40 PM ^
These are all points others have made, but nonetheless:
1. I wouldn't have spiked the field as it's not my style.
2. It's no big deal. They're 20 year olds and football players. Who gets football players?
3. If asked beforehand, I would have advised against it. Part of the fanbase gets worked up about all sorts of weird stuff that no one can foresee beforehand. Why do something that's completely predictable to get some of the fanbase all bent out of shape, especially in these troubled, split times?
4. There's no way I apologize to Michigan State afterwards.
a. I don't care what they think. Is the 4th thing on the bulletin board going to make a difference?
b. The idea that they have any moral high ground is laughable. Did Bolden intentionally twist someone's head around in an attempt to injur? That and similar stunts are the things that require an apology.
c. It makes us look like pussies.
5. If you still need to apologize, apologize to the Michigan community, not Sparty.

I can't see any coach apologizing for stupid shit like this, because any coach with half a clue doesn't let shit like this happen. its one thing if you are MSU and your defense can back up shit like this, quite another for a player who is marginal at best (Bolden) to do it on a field and against a team whose sole purpose is to make you their bitch. His stupid ass has no idea what is going on on the field prior to game time, apologizing makes him look even worse.

Laugh until you cry. It's the only appropriate response at this point.

The more I think about this, the more I think youre right. Like actually right. It may have come out of Schlissel's office.
October 26th, 2014 at 7:46 PM ^
I realize this is nothing but "Kremlinology" (look it up, kids), but you do have to wonder about the behind-the-scenes events that led to this statement being released.
Remember Dr. Schlissel's statement from September 30: "Our communications going forward will be direct, transparent and timely. The University of Michigan stands for the highest level of excellence in everything we do, on and off the field. That standard will guide my review of this situation and all the University's future actions."
So...is this what happened? Did somebody in Dr. Schlissel's office (or the President himself) decide that a "direct, transparent and timely" communication needed to be generated here? Because the statement attributed to Mr. Hoke is very much unlike anything that would have happened as a response to the situation at any point in the past.
I think it's extremely unlikely that Mr. Brandon told Mr. Hoke during the film session today that he needed to issue a statement immediately. I think it's slightly more likely, but still not probable, that Mr. Hoke decided on his own to issue this statement. So what does that leave?
October 26th, 2014 at 8:25 PM ^
That will help our cause - a guy who knows nothing about collegiate athletics micromanaging the athletic department, especially at a time like this.
October 26th, 2014 at 7:46 PM ^
It doesn't matter. Fire all these idiots immediately and we'll be fine.

I mean, what is the point of having this tent stake in the locker room if not to drive it into the field? I don't give a shit about the fact that it actually happened, but Hoke didn't know it would happen? Please. He just realized after the fact that it was stupid and now is in CYA mode (which is also a dumb tack to take).
Also, only #douchetonio would take the podium post game and be that pissed after wiping the floor with his rival.

P.S. Dantonio is a douche and he proved it yesterday...
