1. Offense vs Minnesota

Starts at 1:00

Brian hit someone with a tennis ball in the schwangle-dangles. It wasn't a passing rutger because Michigan didn't have more points than Minnesota had passing yards, they tied (but they had an Iowutger?). Another short game of "JJ's incompletions". No flea flickers, what are we doing?? JJ looked extremely calm and collected against zone coverage, which was a direct contrast to Kyle McCord. Myles Hinton came in during garbage time and can't redshirt, also Henderson is the guy. Kallel Mullings is for real and really fun to watch. Michigan is leading the country in penalty yards (in the good way). Jack Tuttle looks awesome during Tuttle Time!

2. Defense vs Minnesota

Starts at 34:26

We start with good things! Mason Graham played out of his mind with one hand. Braiden McGregor had a great game, he adds two more pass break-ups. So many guys had great games that we don't even mention Kris Jenkins for a little while. Goode, Grant, and Benny got moved a bit so maybe Minnesota's run blocking was decent. There were some tactical issues with the linebackers that can be fixed. Discussing Minnesota's touchdown play.

3. Hot Takes, Game Theory, and Special Teams

Starts at 57:24

Takes hotter than Mario Cristobal's hot seat after the dumbest thing we've ever seen in a football game (TWICE). What was PJ Fleck doing at the end of the first half? James Turner hit a routine field goal, yay. Tommy Doman kicked a kickoff out of bounds, boo. After the personal foul hit on JJ they should've kicked an on-side kick and then brough out Jack Tuttle. Brian talks about the Ohio State game since he has to miss the Jamie segment, brings up that Ohio State can't run the ball. A lot of the bad things that happened to Maryland were caused by Maryland.

4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac

Starts at 1:24:21

Ohio State - 37
Maryland - 17

Maryland had this game in hand but then Maryland'd. Ohio State is 81st nationally in yards per carry vs P5 teams. Ohio State's offensive line can't really move people, their go-to run play is stretch and they don't run it well. Lathan Ransom has looked better, though.

Nebraska - 20
Illinois - 7

Nebraska's run defense looked legit in this game, which makes Michigan's performance look better. Illinois is in a bad place right now.

Rutgers - 13
Wisconsin - 24

Rutgers just didn't have enough fire power or downfield passing threats to stay in this game. Wisconsin continues to appear to have a free trip to Indianapolis.

Northwestern - 23
Howard - 20

No notes.

Iowa - 20
Purdue - 14

This is one of the ugliest football games we have ever barely watched. Purdue cannot stop an inside run. Iowa turns everyone they play into Iowa. The Hawkeyes had zero completions to wide receivers.

We should have had the passing Rutger but for a bad spot.  The third and short pass completion Minny had to Spann-Ford was spotted as a no-gain but was a one yard loss (at least, maybe two yards).

I thought the clock management at the end of the first half made perfect sense.  Draw time down as much as possible because the priority is to reduce the chance Michigan can score before the half runs out.  Then they converted the first down, so at that point with like 22 seconds left on the clock, now you might as well see if you can get a score before the half ends.

Agree, and Blackledge briefly touched on that Michigan also got the ball to start the second half.  Giving Michigan the ball with a chance to score points at the end of the half and start of second could have been the hammer blow.

It was still at least a game at halftime.

I think once Minnesota got into 4th and 2 from our 40, they handled clock management well.  But the rest of the drive, in which they were actually running the ball for some pretty consistent 5-8 yard chunks, they showed no urgency whatsoever.  It cost them the chance to try to continue to drive into the end zone and forced them instead to try a low-probability prayer, which just happened to be Kaliakmanis' only great pass of the night.

I was at the game, and pretty much the whole stadium hated that clock management. I think both the Michigan and Minnesota fans were booing at that point. The game was 24-3 at that point, and it's decision time. You either play to not lose too badly, or you play to win. If you go into halftime with 24-10 deficit and some momentum, that's only a 2-score game and feels pretty different than 24-6 or 24-3. On other other hand, does 31- or 27-3 feel all that different in terms of 2nd-half chances than 24-3? No, I don't think it does. By attempting to wind down the clock, Fleck was telling his team that he'd already given up. Now, that message was rather undercut by the perfect endzone bomb just before the half, but that was basically luck rather than a result of some mastermind game management.

Was at the game and when they snapped the ball on the end of half TD I immediately groaned "ahhhhhh, they got em!". My son asked what I was talking about and how I knew.

Fleck knew the situation for his team was bad. He wanted anything to help his team at that point and running traditional stuff was not working. He played the whole thing as if he was running out the clock to kick a field goal. Michigan wasn't ready for the downfield attempt. Sainristil misses the receiver going deep because he was expecting an in or out route to pick up a couple yards and either get out of bounds or stop the clock. Sabb is very late getting over the top to help (in fact he never gets there) because he is expecting something in the middle of the field. The D-Line and LB's were not crushing the pocket like they had the whole first half because they were dropping to cover the middle and prevent a long QB run. That was the only play the MN QB had enough time to throw deep all game.

Well played by Fleck.

This grumpy old man started yelling where had that had been all half.  I loudly explained to my son why that play was available at that point, but not any other time in the game. The old man kept complaining the whole second half anyway.

On the McCarthy incompletion game: I would like to defend Donovan Edwards a little bit on that first 'drop' they gave to him.

That ball was coming in HOT. That was a short throw and JJ needed to take just a little bit off that one. In the replay you can see the ball hitting Edwards' pad before his hands even react. So maybe I'd give that one split responsibility. Maybe 60/40 Edwards.

There was no reason to lose his feet for that pass. It wasn't THAT bad. He should've run his route past the sticks. And if not, then he shouldn't have lost his feet. Otherwise, there's literally no point in running that route. At the very best, that's a drop on a TWO. At the very worst, that's a a drop on a THREE with a minus for the route.

I need to know more about Brian's mysterious tennis spin.  He said the guy stepped to his left returning the serve and the ball spun into him.  Normally a slice for a righty is always going to curve to the returner's right.  Is Brian a lefty?  Was it a nasty kicker so fast the returner couldn't stop it from hitting his junk?  Inquiring minds want to know.

Jack Tuttle looks awesome during Tuttle Time!

He did.  We ground right through them with our second team without skipping a beat.  I was hoping Davis Warren was going to happen, but alas.

I find the balancing act of when to pull starters interesting.  You obviously want to secure the win, but it seems like they play longer than that.  My guess is they play them long enough to get game reps and experience playing later into games, but you don't want to wear them down or expose them to injury.

Yes, you want to secure the win, but you also want to secure the blow-out win. It makes everyone feel better and helps with the polls, etc.

If you pulled the starters, say, at the half, that opens a window for the opposition. Most Big Ten teams are going to have the starters to compete with our backups, and if the difference is only a few scores at that point, there's a very real chance for a comeback. That means our backups are getting reps against their starters, which isn't great for self-confidence, but it also means that if the game gets close again, we have to put our starters back in to close it out, which doesn't feel great for the team's confidence and sets narratives for the CFP committee and voters.

The key thing is that you need to pull the starters when the opponent's starters has no chance of a comeback against our backups. That has both score differential and time components to it, and Michigan is going way up on teams too early for the backups to play the rest of the game and still win comfortably.

I'd like to imagine in the future that Brian will yell out, "YOU GOT COOKED" each and every time his opponent falls victim to his nasty left hook to the dingle dangle.
