1. The Michigan State Situation

Starts at 1:00

ESPN and USA Today have released articles detailing Mel Tucker's investigation of sexual harassment involving Brenda Tracy. Mel Tucker is turbo fired but legally they need to follow the process and put him on administrative leave for now. An alarming number of Big Ten programs have tried to hide damning reports from the media. When will universities hold themselves accountable for their actions?

2. Offense vs UNLV

Starts at 17:04

Once again, the story is JJ playing out of his mind. The evaluating of his incompletions is, once again, short. Some of his throws are just ridiculous. When the linebackers turn their backs, he sees it and throws behind them. His pocket movement is good enough to give him the extra beat to get a throw off. He even had a couple nice runs. The receivers appear to be reading the coverage and JJ is on the same page as them. The only thing we really haven't seen is a deep ball. UNLV covered the deep and intermediate routes, so JJ just hits Blake Corum for 20 yards. JJ is projecting to be the best Michigan quarterback of our lives. Where is Alex Orji? Jack Tuttle's run looked really nice before he got injured. Jayden Denegal had a nice throw. Tyler Morris has emerged and is a good blocker. The ground game wasn't what you'd like. UNLV did load the box at times but the dive plays are too predictable. They're not rotating the tackles like they said they would. It doesn't look like there's any major issue but there are a bunch of little things. Is there reason to just expect this year's run game to not be the same as last year? Even if that's the case, that's fine because JJ.

3. Hot Takes, Defense, and Special Teams

Starts at 1:06:54

Takes hotter than JJ McCarthy, what else is there to say? How upsetting is it that Michigan got the same score as Ohio State? We were all hyped up about the Go-Go offense and then they didn't do anything. The expectations for the defensive line are being met emphatically. Cam Goode is out there making plays. Derrick Moore is moving incredibly for someone that weighs 260 pounds. Who is blocking this defensive line, Purdue? Mike Barrett's ability to locate a swing pass early was fun. No Rod Moore, Will Johnson came in for a series. Keon Sabb played like a promising sophomore. Caden Kolesar shined in this game. Jyaire Hill seems like he's still on track to start by the end of the year. Punt return situation is a bit of a caretaker situation. Tommy Doman is booming his punts.

4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac

Starts at 1:49:33

Iowa - 20
Iowa State - 13

Cade McNamara was 12/22 for 123 yards and an interception. Oof. Defensive touchdowns do count for Brian Ferentz's 25 points per game goal.

Colorado - 36
Nebraska - 14

Who has the most career turnovers as a player (fumbles and interceptions). Jeff Sims has to be up there (he's at 37). This game had to be so frustrating for the Nebraska defense. They had eight sacks!

Purdue - 24
Virginia Tech - 17

Purdue has a viable run game and destroyed the Virginia Tech run game. It's a road game win against a power five team for the Big Ten! The rain delay in this game was five and a half hours. Purdue spent its time playing spades.

Washington State - 31
Wisconsin - 22

Who isn't rooting for Washington State this season, all things considered? Oregon State fans cheered really loud when this score was announced at their stadium. It's depressing that both of these teams will lose almost all the traditions their fans grew up to love. It's a sin against college football for Wisconsin to not be Wisconsin and they are being punished.

Ohio State - 35
Youngstown State - 7

Feels like a vintage Ohio State team should score 70 in this game. Notre Dame is looming in two weeks and the Irish are looking pretty good.

Kansas - 34
Illinois - 23

Illinois had a defensive collapse, giving up 277 passing yards and allowing two rushers to get 120 and 98 yards. Kansas only punted once. Illinois has Penn State up next, this could be a long year for the Illini. Their dudes at defensive tackle got wrecked.

The rest of the games were pretty much blowouts, there aren't really any takes. Besides Biff Poggi's arms.

Ohio State is going to lose by 2 touchdowns to ND, and I'm all in for that.  Hate both teams, but can't wait for the meltdown in OH re Day.  ND probably has 3 losses this year on their schedule anyways

I don't know about ND winning by 2 TDs but I think the Irish have to be a slight (3-4pt) betting favorite at this point. At the beginning of the season I had OSU about a 7 pt favorite so that is a really big swing in my perception of this game.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Brian's HOT TAKE of OSU going to the Outback Bowl coming true.

As much as I’d love for OSU to feel that absolute misery we felt for years, X10, I’m still apprehensive to give this game to ND. Outside of losing to us and Georgia, which they should have. I think Days done a good job of winning the games they should given the talent advantage. An OSU loss will take a surgeon to remove my shit eating grin. But I’ll believe it when I see it.

1V, I don't take offense. My pearls are still dangling easily, and it's not that the gang is being ridiculous, the point Carolina Blue makes above. I'm a BIG fan of being ridiculous. Notice I mentioned the alternative of a genuinely loud yell.

Instead, it's the opposite. When any of us try to act ridiculous, part of us tries to go big but another part gets embarrassed and instinctively holds back.

Vocally, it's what happens when people sing Happy Birthday, many deliberately screeching badly because, somewhere between lizard brain and conscious thought, their (our) bodies are embarrassed that we might not sing well. Or consider back in the day that Howard Dean caught flak for making a yelling noise. But the problem wasn't the noise itself but that it was constricted. Without consciously recognizing the problem, people felt it was not a fully expressed effort but a constricted one, Dean trying to go big but betrayed by his embarrassed body.

Physically too, athletes do the same. Playing, they keep their eyes wide open to do well. Then after winning, arms go up, grin gets big—showing us how excited they are—but their eyes get shut. Again, it's the body embarrassed by the exuberance.

I need to pay closer attention to the Ohio games.

Is there a chance that what's going on is merely Day stressing more ball control offense in light of his past two The Games?

That, coupled with clock rule changes decreasing number of plays per game could explain perceived drop in Ohio's offense not really having anything to do with decreased competency.

No, it's not just perception, they have problems.  They still can't convert third-and-shorts.  It was one thing against IU (which is at least a capable defense under Tom Allen) but they were only 5 of 12 on 3rd down against FCS YSU in the Shoe.  They're not getting better at the power/short yardage stuff, and now they have a merely very good QB instead of a top-5 draft pick.

Run game, a little.

Defensive ends, a little.

Those are about the only things that I wonder about. For the most part, the team looks really solid. Hope, JJ continues this level of play, because the sky would be the limit.

So hard to know how to root in the non-conference any more.

Washington and Oregon winning is ... good now, because they're almost in the B18? Same for USC and UCLA? (All four are in the top 25?) Or, wait, are we supposed to root against them until next year, but root for Wazzu and Oregon State out of sympathy, even when Wazzu is beating one of the better teams in the B14 West? Are we happy that Colorado thumped Nebraska because we still despise Nebraska? (Can we swap teams with the Big XII? Boulder with Coach Prime is almost too amazing to be on the same planet as Lincoln.)

Are we happy that Texas--almost in the SEC--beat Alabama? Is Alabama still the Evil Empire, or--given that Bama could end the year with 3 losses and not appear in the SEC championship game--are we more concerned about a Big XII Texas skating through the rest of its schedule?

We still really hate ND, right? Like, non-reptilian brain hate more than the Buckeyes kind of hate. (I mean--I do. My four years, 1987 to 1991, we lost to ND in the nonconference every year, most years by a field goal. Hate. Forever.) Like--we may just be rooting for injuries in a couple of weeks, but ultimately we want Ohio to beat ND ... right?

It's all so confusing, and it's all going to change again next year. Kind of makes my head swim.

I can't get worried about the OL right now!  I don't believe that Hinton will stick at RT - he's getting game time because he gets 4 games before redshirting.  And I'm hoping that Henderson is good enough that Barnhart is getting his PT in early to be polished up for a 6th OL role.  I'm not sure that either Jones or Henderson need a lot of time on the field in these early snoozers.  Maybe its just providing more time for Hinton and Barnhart to pick up outside zone?

In any case, I can't worry about it until it starts to get painful in the regular season.

Completely agree that this is the most likely situation, and I like the strategy.  Nothing creates more discord on a team than someone that feels slighted.  To ensure that doesn't happen, Hinton is getting his opportunities.  It should then become very clear to him that's he's not one of the best 5.  So he will know what he needs to work on, he needs to stay ready, but he won't be starting once the Big Ten season begins.

That's meritocracy in action.

The other catch is that they have to know the playbook, which is huge. Henderson missing spring practice has to be an issue with his playing time.

Hinton over Trente is a bit of a head-scratcher, but Michigan loves that 6th O-Line look, and Trente is more suited to it than Hinton.

We'll see how they lineup Saturday. I would be surprised if changes aren't made, eventually.

Unfortunately it seems like the simplest explanation is that Henderson hasn't gotten up to speed yet. He missed all of spring and only showed up in the fall. I don't think the coaching staff is doing him any favors by making him fight with Barnhart for the LT job either. I think most had the two of them starting at the tackle positions, but to this point I don't believe either has played/practiced any RT this year.

This doesn't pass the smell test for me. Our staff is ALL bout competition and meritocracy. And OL needs reps to be evaluated, because cohesion and communication are critical

Barnhart is a veteran, he doesn't need any "polishing" and certainly not in relation to a person who just recently joined the program and is kicking back out to LT from G

Hinton has looked really bad... not sure why he isn't getting rotated like they said.

Something weird is going on and we'll just have to see how it plays out.
