play it cool

The professional approach to replays.

Hey Brian,

After watching Michigan slowly walk to the line after the Gardner not-a-catch-not-a-3rd down conversion on Saturday, I screamed at the tv for Michigan to snap the ball and run a play before the official reviewed the play.  My question is why don't coaches have a set of 3-4 plays that they  have their team run whenever they think a big play might be overturned? In this case, even a quick QB sneak that burns a play and starting over at 2nd and 10 is better than punting the ball back to Air Force.  I feel similarly after teams have long passes that change field position or off a turnover.

I was wondering if numbers and percentages support this theory, and if there are coaches (potentially including Hoke) who may have this package of plays already installed.

Go Blue,
Brooks

I have heard your frustrations many times and seen teams hurry to the line after a questionable decision almost as frequently. And it never works. When a team hurries to the line in an attempt to defuse the replay threat, the replay guy stops watching the Golf Channel, gets incensed, and always calls down for a review. Always. Without fail.

It's like running away from a crime scene. It's a rookie move. Would that French dude from The Professional hurry to the line? No. He would play it cool, man. He's got all the time in the world.

In re: having a set of quick plays after a turnover or big change in field position, clearly some teams put an emphasis on that sort of thing. We just saw Air Force go up-tempo whenever they'd pick up 10 or 15 yards. That approach isn't free, though. Michigan is emphasizing other stuff.

New banner.

I noticed this live but immediately forgot about it:

Not sure if you noticed or not, but we finally got the new M Banner out for Air Force.  It's been a 3 year project.  We've made 3 different banners for various reasons, and it finally was approved and used for Air Force.

It looked great.  With the "maize" much closer to the actual maize and much more matching the uniforms.

Here are a couple pictures: The 'orangeish' picture I took from the MGoBlue website.  The 'maize' picture, I took from the front page of MGoBlog. (Eric's slide show.)

Just wanted to close the loop on this god awful long project.  (there was still a problem with the poles, so hopefully that will get handled by UMass)

(This will come up because it always comes up: photos make things different colors. Look at the contrast between the banner and the pants in both photos to confirm a very real difference.)

Man. I'm in the cap that thinks maize is not bright-bright yellow, and I'd heard the AD also thought this and was going to move more towards the orangeish yellow color that I thought was the real maize. It's the difference between burnt orange (understated) and Tennessee's goin'-huntin' orange (HEY GUYS I'M ORANGE). I guess that scuppers that. Maize is blinding now. C'est la vie.

Shane starts?

Brian,

I wrote you earlier this summer about whether Shane Morris would be down for a redshirt next year, to which you said, “yeah”.  Well, two games into this season and seeing how the Denard/Borges fusion cuisine is coming, and seeing how Devin Gardner is progressing as a WR, is causing me to rethink that for 2013.  There are a couple things I think Hoke and Borges are concluding right now: 1) DG will not get that fifth year from the NCAA in 2014; 2) they’ve seen enough of DG at QB to think that he won’t work out as a starter in their system in 2013; 3) they are willing to roll the dice with a freshman Morris starting at QB next year, throwing to a mini-Megatron in Devin Gardner (who will still be the #2 QB).   Like I said, three things.

I know the 2012 season has hardly started, but I get the feeling DG’s move to WR is permanent even if he doesn’t know it yet.  I see Borges thinking he’s done with this transition as soon as Denard ends this season and Shane gives him the best bet to do that, potential magical 2017 season be damned.  What do you think?

Pete-rock

I think there's a possibility things work out like you suggest, but not a strong one. Michigan is planning on moving Gardner back to quarterback after the year is over, something that will presumably last through the spring. If Gardner gets beat out, then and only then will he move back. And even then you've got Russell Bellomy with not one but two years of experience under his belt in front of Morris. It's a tall order for any true freshman to beat out experienced scholarship guys in front of him, and Morris seems like a pretty raw kid when it comes to reading coverages since most of his time in high school is spent running for his life.

Let's not do the freshman QB thing. I don't like that thing. If Gardner is Braylon 2.0 the rest of this year, okay maybe. Long way to go on that project.

I do agree that next year you'll see the offense flip into what it's going to be going forward even if Gardner wins the job. The OL will be shifting into more of a manball mode, they'll have plenty of tight ends, and they'll have a collection of strapping downfield targets at WR. The spread is dead at Michigan after this year.

Neutral sites are lame, according to the best announce guys ever.

I know you're a fan of McDonough and Spielman and thought I'd reinforce that.  They're calling the USC "@" Syracuse game from MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and have spent a good portion of the 4th quarter talking about how much better this game would be for Syracuse if they were playing it in the Carrier Dome in terms of recruiting and rewarding their fans who have suffered through some lean times and now are starting to get a half decent team again (they're hanging in pretty well, if they could cover a punt they could maybe have a chance).  But instead of having a top five team at home, they have to drive five hours for some ridiculous overpriced tickets.

So kudos to McDonough and Spielman.

Also: the Big Ten sucks, ye gods.

Yes. My thinking flipped on the Alabama game when the ticket prices were announced. At a minimum they were 60% higher than Michigan tickets, and I'd bet the average price was double. A lot of those cost 250 bucks. They had no problem selling those tickets at those prices, so why not move that to a home and home where you get 20k more people in the stadium and aren't cutting Jerry Jones in on the profits?

I don't get the neutral site thing at all. You built your stadium for a reason. Use it. If it's a UConn thing where the stadium they built is actually smaller than the big-game venue, I guess I get that, but even so I'd rather Michigan plays at Rentschler than Yet Another Identical NFL Stadium. That doesn't wow my experience. The opportunity to visit Tuscaloosa for a game does.

In re: Big Ten. Seriously.

A thousand words on branding.

Attached - taken in section 25 before yesterday's Air Force game.

Denard-jerseys-pic

I'm a staunch believer in Brandon but had to admit that this looked ridiculous.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but L to R: 2010-11 away, [some woman], 2012 Sugar Bowl, 2011 UTL, 2012 Cowboys Classic.

"Chief marketing officers and Hunter [Lochmann]’s job description would include building the brand, which is very much about the presentation and the image of the 'Block-M.'  How do we enhance it, how do we expand it, how do we make sure that the image of that brand is consistent with what we want that image to be, how do we present that brand in the most positive light possible?  And this has everything to do with how the brand appears when it's being used — from the uniforms we wear, the branding of our facilities, the branding of our materials, a lot of classic brand management kinds of responsibilities."  - D. Brandon, 4/5/11 (link)

Keep up the good work and Go Blue,

Chris
North Olmsted, OH

At least they're making a tiny amount of extra revenue from those—under a million from the UTL jerseys and who knows how much of that was cannibalized from regular sales—that they're spending on people in the athletic department who plan ways to get incremental revenue so they can hire more people to acquire incremental revenue. Also, the man Michigan hired to build the brand has the twitter handle "Lochdog715." Lochdog should use some of that incremental revenue to polish up his personal brand.

Lochdog. Holy pickles.

While tailgating, I watched as people trundled up Main Street and saw a small # of folks in those MSU game monstrosities, along with the UTL ones (which, while not great, were decidely better than MSU) and thought, "Wow - how do we continue to screw up such a great uniform? Wha' happen?"

Granted, some of the time said uniform is being worn by a fat person on whom only a Homer-esque mumu would be appropriate, but still.

The Alabama game jerseys (of which I haven't seen outside of on TV) do really show Michigan's new "highlighter" yellow approach. I'm guessing they, too, look worse on the average fan. On TV, it looked like someone was trying to emphasize how important the shoulder pad area was while preparing for their Kinesiology exam.

Remember all the people who went with the whole "Its just for one game" argument prior to UTL?  Well, yeah, not so much.

In one year and two games we have used how many "alternate" jerseys?  ULT, MSU, Sugar Bowl, Cowboy Classic - That's four and I feel like I am forgetting one.  (I can't even remember all of them!)  This is also different from just tweaking the stripes on the road jersey every few years.  These are new unis being worn one time, sold to fans, and tossed aside.  I have this deep fear that Brandon has a few marketing aces rolling out dozens more.  I am just bracing for "Maize Jerzeee Day, brought to you by Bic Bright Liner, the Official Highligher of the University of Michigan."

Re: Jerzeys. This is why get off my lawn.

Re: Banner - as long as the maize is consistent it doesn't trip my OCD and I'm fine with it. But pick one color and stick with it.

Re: Branding/Jerseys - I'm surprised that we've gone with so many damn jerseys considering how uniform (sorry, unintentional) the AD has been regarding the Block M. The split M is dead, as are tons of other "Michigan" symbols. http://mgoblog.com/diaries/block-m-and-branding You'd think they'd want a simple, straightforward approach to football jerseys too.

"But pick one color and stick with it."

Here, here.

At last year's Purdue game which was on a cloudy but not dark day, I noticed 4 different shades of "maize" just on the uniform alone:  helmet wings, helmet #s, jersey #s, and pants.  That's not even counting the Banner, scoreboard graphics, and various stadium trim and tram.  Just pick a decent color and standardize on it.

In my personal snowflake opinion, we're drifitng a little bit toward the flourescent-yellow-that-almost-looks-green edge of the spectrum, ala Baylor's NCAA BB unis.  I'd like to see us dial that back a little bit.

But I do like the bright yellow.  It really "pops" against our dark blue background.  When I see someone wearing Michigan apparel, I can always tell it's Michigan just by the tint of the colors.   It's unique to us.  You can't say that about Notre Dame, USC, Alabama, Oklahoma, Ohio State . . .

Mainly due to how things look on TV. HDTV is another game changer. I don't care what it is (I don't want it to get to the Baylor/Oregon level you reference) but I totally agree with you - the Wings, pants, numbers etc. should match! I don't really have OCD but I do have some tendancies, and when things that should match dont, ugh.

did anyone notice Senator Carl Levin helping to hold up the banner?

i feel like you can break michigan's schedule in 2013 (and every year) into 3) 4 game chunks. i think chunk 1 is gardner at qb, chunk 2 is 70% garnder, 30% morris, chunk 3 is at least 50% morris with garnder at wr. i think there is no way morris goes henne from day 1, but by the end of the season it will be his team.

...wearing a Michigan jersey of some flavor on the scoreboard screen as the banner was erected.

The B-2 was cool, of course, and the Bennie Oosterbaan video tribute was especially well done. But  for me, the best thing about the pregame was the coin flip with the Army NCOs including the Medal of Honor recipient. While we rightly bash the Athletic Dept for its jersey escapades, let's give them credit where credit is due for a fabulous pregame. They do a great job keeping the traditions alive while adding on special touches.

You could write a colossal 900-word laundry list of everything wrong with the alternate jersey phenomenon, and it still wouldn't speak as loudly as that picture. A picture is truly with a thou-- oh no, I guess I said 900...

I don't think the spread is quite dead after this year. We will still have Gallon and Dileo, the Hoke-recruited O-Lineman still may still need to physically mature before they can excel at "manball" blocking schemes and obviously running is a big part of Gardner's skillset.

Looking at 2014 as the first year of the "new" Michigan offense, which I don't think will look as close to "old old" Michigan offense as some think. Shane Morris is no statue.

I'm going to guess that after we lose Denard, the quasi-spread-hybrid plays go with him.  It's obvious that Borges isn't completely comfortable with spread play calling.  This is why for the most part that people are unhappy with him.  He tries to get Denard some space, but isn't very successful.  Also, it isn't because Gardner is slow or Morris is not mobile that we won't be running a spread, it's because our playcaller doesn't like it.  Our recruiting only solidifies that opinion.  We will move away from quasi-hybrid-spread plays as soon as humanly possible.  Next year will be all about growing pains.

UMaD

September 11th, 2012 at 2:28 PM ^

I wouldn't be so sure it's entirely dead after this year.  Devin is (probably) the best overall QB next year and if he starts Borges will continue to call plays that attempt to utilize the available skillset of his players.  For Devin, that means being a consistent run threat and getting deployed in a formation/system with which he is familiar.  The spread is the best fit for fast and talented QBs-that-can-play-WR (e.g., Pryor, Young). Furthermore, Devin has only ever run the spread.  It's what he ran in high school, it's what he ran for Rodriguez, and it's what he will have practiced these 2 years backing up Denard. I don't see Borges crossing his fingers and hoping Devin can run a new offense his senior year.

Obviously there will be a move away from the spread that Denard has run, fewer designed QB runs and whatnot, but it won't be gone entirely if Devin is the QB.  I anticipate a gradual evolution, not a sudden 'death of the spread'. We won't see Borges' desired vision fully in place until Bellomy or Morris (or ___) assumes the starting QB postion. Even then, Bellomy is a pretty decent athlete whose game would benefit from the occassional spread play-calling.  Surely after 2-3 (or even 4) years of it, Borges is going to become more comfortable with spread elements and might retain elements of what he's learned, even when he has 'west-coast' personnel... as long as your QB isn't a moose, sprinkling in some spread play-calling is going to be useful.

UMaD

September 11th, 2012 at 10:55 PM ^

That is clear from his press conferences.  I don't get the sense that he is big on comparing one season to the next, but even if he does - why can't he compare Denard to Devin?  They're different obviously both both our guys whose legs are a great asset to the offense.  The spread is the best way to exploit that.

umfanchris

September 11th, 2012 at 4:42 PM ^

Devin will get the chance to compete at QB, but I wouldn't be suprised at all to see Bellomy win the job outright. Bellomy is a very good player and the coaches know that. That is the reason that the coaches felt good enough to move Gardner to Wide Reciever. If they didn't feel comfortable with him as the primary backup then they would limit Gardner at Wide Reciever.

We may see a couple spread plays in the future, but I think the spread as our main formation is gone. With Hoke's recruiting we are starting to see the Bigger RB's, the Bigger Recievers, The stronger lineman, the emphasis on the TE (with some depth). Just because a QB is mobile doesn't mean they have to play in the spread to be effective. Look at some of these great athletes/runners that have played well in the west coast system: Michael Vick with Philedlphia, Steve Young, Jeff Garcia, Donovon Mcnabb, etc. If our team is molding more toward a west coast team then why not move to that next year?

UMaD

September 11th, 2012 at 11:05 PM ^

That's nothing against Bellomy, who I've always liked, but Devin is a 5-star QB recruit and he won the job coming out of camp.  If Michigan had other viable options at outside receiver, this isn't even a conversation anyone is having.

The backup QB is always the most popular guy.  Last year people wanted to move Denard to WR because Devin was a natural fit for the offense.  Now people want Devin to move to WR for good as soon as possible.

I'm not arguing the direction of the offense is away from the spread, but I am arguing it's going to take time.  Hoke is recruiting bigger RBs, but Rodriguez recruited Hopkins and succeeded with Owen Schmidt. Plus, Norfleet and or Hayes may be better backs than Rawls or Smith or Shallman.  Oregon uses plenty of TEs.  Nothing precludes a spread offense from using bigger WRs in the slot, besides - we still have Dileo and Gallon and Norfleet and Hayes.

I see an evolution away from the spread, not discarding it completely.  Doing that would take your most talented and experienced QB and force him into a system he's never played in before.

Also while tailgating, I bemoaned the fact we wouldn't get a chance to see a big time non-conf program in the foreseeable future like Alabama in the Big House (or go to Bryant-Denny stadium for those who live in the region or travel). My only thought is Brandon things those type of "regular" games are too pedestrian.

I mean, I hate MSU, but I am envious they get to play Oregon, Alabama and Miami (YTM) over the next 8 years in home & homes. We, on the other hand, get Utah. Yipee.

bronxblue

September 11th, 2012 at 2:35 PM ^

I understand neutral games if the prospect of a home-and-home is impossible.  Like, I never expect Alabama to ever go north of Virginia in that program's future, and even then it would be a stretch.  So at least a neutral site eliminates the perpetual home games that SEC teams enjoy.  But USC has shown they are willing to travel, and going to the Carrier Dome would have been nice for the fans.

As for jerseys, I honestly don't care anymore.  No team in America has really maintained the sanctity of their colors to the degree that they used to, and so I'm no longer going to be worked up if Brandon and co. raise the G from #55 to #6B.

Since when is corn burnt orange in color? I know when I buy corn, fresh on the cobb or frozen niblets, it's always a pretty solid yellow. It certainly would never be called burnt orange. Maize is a shade of yellow, not a shade of orange. Maybe that's modern food processing, that corn has been cultivated for it's color more than flavor the way oranges and apples have been, but you can't argue with the reality of it. Maize is the color of corn, and the color of corn is light to deep yellow. It would never be mistaken for a shade of orange. Hate on Monsanto and ADM if you like, but on this, Dave Brandon is just representing the brand in the actual color of corn.

For what it's worth, I have always preferred the brighter yellow tones to burnt orange.

If you're going with the plant-based definition for the color "maize," well, it's not that descriptive.  Corn comes in a variety of colors, from very pale yellow through deep orange.  Just because most supermarkets only carry one variety doesn't mean others don't exist.

E.g.: http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/Aug09/maizeGenetics.html

However, most corn isn't colored highlighter yellow.  Let's stay away from that.

robpollard

September 11th, 2012 at 2:53 PM ^

Lots of corn is also white. So when we wear our white jersey, are we also wearing maize jerseys? ;)

I personally don't really mind the brighter yellow (except when it's over used, like it was against Alabama - that was blinding). As mentioned elsewhere, what I really care about  colorwise is the same color be used throughout, e.g., helmet matches the jersey.

However, maize (generally speaking - it's a color outside of its use by Michigan) is typically not bright, highlighter yellow.  It definitely has an orange tinge to it

See below examples (even the UM example shows the color can be lighter, like the new football unis, or darker, like it used to be. It's just the baseline is typically not bright yellow):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:GEM_corn.jpg

http://www.colourlovers.com/color/D8A830/Maize

http://www.color-swatches.com/crayola/standard-colors/maize/swatch.html

http://www.bows-n-ties.com/wedding-neckties-maize.php

http://www.umflint.edu/urel/use-of-color.php

Ultimately, we can make "maize" be whatever we want. I mean, UM's blue has changed over time as well (it's gotten darker). So I suppose "reality" is whatever we want it to be.

robpollard

September 11th, 2012 at 3:37 PM ^

...but we seem to be inventing the future with our own particular, day-glo version. Even the image you have above is noticeably softer than our new "maize."

But as you said, as long we keep it somewhere on the yellow/orange spectrum and don't get totally ridiculous, we can Lewis Carroll/Humpty Dumpy that thing and have it mean whatever we want, I suppose.

According to my conversations with the marketing department in the AD, the correct maize is PMS 116 (Blue is PMS 282)

The new banner is not quite that color maize because it would have involved a custom run of fabric of over 300 yards, so, we were forced to pick the yellow that is closest.  It's not the perfect maize, but I think it's better than the old, and more importantly more closely matches the uniforms.  I really don't care which yellow we use, but I believe it should all match.

When you pull up the PMS 116, you'll see that is an almost perfect match to the exterior of the new scoreboards and the new stuff at crisler and Yost.  It's a 3-5 year project (according to AD) to get all the different maizes to be the same in all the different apparel.

Im not 100% sure what you are referring to since I don't see a link in your repsonse.

I do know that the Athletic department is at a little bit of odds with the University over this and some of the mind numbing conversations that I had with the AD had to do with the incongruencies (sp?) between the AD and the University and all the different schools and departments within the university.

I thought the letter was about having 5 people take six seats.  I know in my section, there are two people near us that take up easily 4 1/2 seats.  Watching others try to squeeze in their seats is worth the price of admission.  I know I am personally tired of the guy behind me knocking his knees into my back every other play.
