Iowa 85, Michigan 67 Comment Count

There's no way I'm recapping, uh, that on a Saturday afternoon. Consider this an open thread (as always, keep it civil) and try to keep in mind that Michigan bounced back pretty well from a similar outing last year.

stauskas doesn't have his head in his ass. he has the other team's quickest midget in his ass. it'll be worse against Ohio, 'cause they have pikachu, and he gets in assets very well. at his height, I'd love to see him post up some of these smaller guards. he can back them down and turn-around jumper them to death, if that type of action was drawn into the half-court offense. as far as gr3 and Jordan or Kobe films--passive is passive. a guy that passive needs to develop a superior shot from three, 'cause passivity shows more Kyle korver than it ever will Jordan or Jordan's best impersonator.

Can someone with better hoops knowledge than me please explain what happened to our pick and roll game? How did IU and Iowa completely take it away? Somehow I want to blame Morgan and Horford, but I am not entirely sure why.

gr3=Tracy McGrady unless he improves. Big name, all name. Love the kid but everyone was to high on him. I liked Laverts game more but you can tell he's just scratching the surface and has room to improve. Nik needs to not try to be the man, he's not complete either. Were full of potential but everyone is young that we need to step up, big guys remind me of the ellerbe days where they just get hustle points or nothing.

GR3 is really talented but his game is lacking in the ball handling department and he is not a lights out shooter. He really should stay another year to work on his game and get  little more size on him. TMac could score at will and GR3 just doesn't have that ability.

Lacks the attack dog mentality for sure.
Last summer I was in line behind GRIII and his gf at the Kroger off Stadium and Industrial. I had a couple minutes to (creepily) observe him up close. He is a physical marvel to be sure. A pure specimen. But I thought he gave off a really laid back, almost timid demeanor, even just shopping with his gf for groceries. He is almost too nice and polite and buttoned down. Thats kinda how he plays ball too right? He needs to find that beast mode mentality from somewhere. He needs swag lessons in addition to improving his jumper.

The worst thing I have read since the 9-11 commission report.... Do you even watch basketball?

T-Mac didn't go to college.... He won multiple scoring titles, multiple all-star appearances, multiple playoff trips with his team on his back the entire season... and if you want to split hairs, prob would have a dunk contest title on his mantle if it was for THE BEST DUNK CONTEST PERFORMANCE EVER (- maybe Jordan) by Vince Carter.

GR3 is talented in transition... but he has got to put a chip on his shoulder like his dad had. Until then... He isn't even Harold Miner... While we are talking dunk contests...

Why is that Michigan has several players who are bigger, faster and more athletic than Novak was, but don't seem able to grab as many rebounds as Novak did?  If Michigan's Plan B (when Stauskas is off) involves contested jump shots and transition baskets, then they'll need to grab more rebounds on both ends of the court.  The fact that Michigan's perimeter defense is as porous as it is makes this even more peculiar.

Iowa's offensive rebounding was killing us today. The 2nd chance points they got today made it near impossible to go on run to get back in the game. We need to get better at rebounding the ball if not we are going to be in trouble when it comes tournament time.

It's obvious that teams are going to lockdown on Stauskas from here out. Belien recognizes this and you can see that as soon as our opponent start the lockdown he goes to GR3. GR becomes aggressive trying to get going in turn pulling the defense off Stauskas. The problem is GR just hasn't got hot. We need a serious #2 go to guy. I think we have him/them it just hasn't manifested. I predict if this continues someone will in time step into that roll. Maybe Zak, his presence could stretch the D and he's shown his ability to get hot.  It would be nice if Big Dog's takeover a game gene kicked in, man that guy could just dominate.

Not entirely sure because I was at work for most of the game but from what I've seen it seems like teams are hedging hard on Stauskas so that he can't pull up from 3 and  the rolling big men tend to get lost in the shuffle in the paint after they roll to the rim. Nik is caught too far out on the perimeter to make a good pass to a big as well.

The team has a lot to play for on Tuesday. . I think they will step up to the challenge. Today isn't even worth talking about. They didn't care so why should we?

I think the criticism of his play is a little overdone. Sometimes these forums make me wince. I don't think he has played well. I think there are some legitimate reasons and I still have faith he will overcome them. McGary's injury has affected Gr111 more than anyone else on the team. He is an undersized player at the 4 position. He's about an inch taller than Hardaway and probably not as strong and is being asked to guard 6'10" players. His role in the halfcourt offense is strange, and I'm not sure even the coaches know where he fits in until his ball handling and shooting improves. I trust this coaching staff knows what this team needs in March and are working towards that or else he wouldn't be playing. I will never forget that rebound last year that allowed us to beat Kansas. I think before he leaves AA he will be rembered as an all time Michigan great. Go Blue

a chance to watch the game, but I imagine they had the same problem that they typically do on the road against a good opponent. We rely too much on jumpers, always have, always will. On the road those jumpers typically have a harder time falling, at the very least, you'll go stretches where they don't go in. I wish we went to the glass more on the road, our shooters seem to go cold a lot. In the longrun we'll be alright, as long as we shoot the jumper well and defend.

But he is not getting killed on the defensive end. At the same time he should have an advantage with a big checking him on the wing. He can't create off the dribble or on the block. Silver lining is we should have a helluva squad returning next year.

the outcome.  But Iowa's guard (I don't remember his name, but he looks like a prick) started the game by hand-checking Walton and Nik all over the place.  Hey refs - this is now a foul, CALL IT.  The officials had nothing to do with the outcome - but c'mon call the hand checks.

If no changes are made, then you ahve to expect the outcomes to be the same.  We don't like the IU and UI results so,,,

...when UofM is not playing hard, I'd like to see Beilein insert Bielfeldt and Albrecht in the lineup as subs, asking them to be super aggressive on the boards (Bielfeldt)  and overplay on defense (both).  Maybe that would spark a positive change in their teammates.   At least it is a change of pace that makes the opposing team alter their play.

the schedule sets up so that this team finishes no worse than 2nd in the B1G ten - not too bad considering what they lost in the draft and McGary.  I think we would all take that back at the beginning of the season if we knew the situation.  With a little luck they can still win it......perhaps longshot.

We needed coach McGary with a whiteboard at this game and Indiana......could have turned it around.  He better make the trip to Columbus.

I'll be watching poor defense and lack of hustle and I'll start to yell at the TV, but then "serenity now" sets in and I think Coach Bielein knows what he's doing. And I believe that....

But, GRIII is overhyped IMO and should be replaced with a legitimate scoring threat like Irvin. Glen has NO handle, cannot hit wide open shots and does not hustle!

Ok, I feel better. Please prove me wrong on Tuesday Mr. III.

They may be 9-2, but they are also 1-2 during the last three games as their opponents have made adjustments (namely how Stauskas is guarded) after UofM's 8-0 start.  UofM has looked very flat and lost during those two losses.

I'm advocating a line-up change when during play when the team is without energy and listless.
