A Further Exploration Into A Terrible Idea Comment Count

Ace

So a business school student and his LSA buddy had a spectacularly bad idea. No, we don't need a new fight song to pair with The Victors, the best fight song in the long and storied history of fight songs. That suggestion alone is enough to make an idea very bad indeed, but what sets this bad idea apart is the details. Lord almighty, is this just the worst of ideas. Why?

WE ALREADY DID THIS. Remember "In The Big House"? Dave Brandon already tried this. When Dave Brandon tries something, it means you should never, ever try to do that thing again.

WHY IS THIS EVEN A GOAL?

“This project is meant to be, number one, extremely unique,” Weiss said. “The goal of this song is to get a lot of big names that are associated with the University.”

I'll try to ignore that the kid called his unoriginal and terrible idea "extremely unique" and address the idea that the University of Michigan needs "big names" associated with it.

I think we're good, thanks.

FINE, LET'S HEAR YOUR BIG NAMES.

While the song’s lyrics and tune are still undetermined, Weiss said it is the organization’s aim to involve big names in the music business and University alumni to contribute to the song. For example, he said Weinberg wants to get Eminem involved.

Weiss also said that David Banner, a rapper and music producer, has already agreed to produce the final product.

I'd laugh if not for the overwhelming feeling this guy is serious, which makes me quite sad. Let's start with Eminem.

  1. Not an alum! You probably knew that.
  2. In fact, his daughter goes to Michigan State.
  3. Peaked in 1999, hasn't made good music since 2002. His new music is basically the old music with more yelling, less novelty, worse production, and an unfortunate amount of auto-tune.
  4. Is gleefully misogynistic and homophobic in his music, which probably isn't the ideal way to represent the University.
  5. Charges in the neighborhood of $30-40K per verse, so not only is he a bad idea, he's an expensive bad idea.

In the other corner, we've got David Banner, who's from Jackson, Mississippi, and is inextricably associated with Southern rap. His solo career peaked in 2005 with the club single "Play" and he hasn't released a major label album since 2008. It's a little shocking that a current college student would suggest David Banner, because I feel old playing "Cadillac on 22's" in my car. I can't imagine most students associate the name David Banner with anything outside of the Incredible Hulk.

HERE'S WHAT AN EMINEM/DAVID BANNER COLLABORATION WOULD PROBABLY SOUND LIKE IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 2015.

Yeah, I kinda paused with that comment as well.  Eminem isn't really my "jam" at this stage in my life (and my use of "jam" probably brings into question if he ever was), but his music has stayed about the same since the first Slim Shady LP, though with better/different production now.  He's a 40-ish guy who is pretty homophobic/sexist, but has great hooks and can be introspective at times.  That has basically been his MO for years now.

His peak time was right around his "Forgot about Dre" feature and "The Marshall Mathers LP" which is 1999 and 2000, respectively. His last great album was 2002 with "The Eminem Show". I'd argue he's still made some good music since then though, it's just been much more hit or miss. "Encore" had some alright stuff, "Recovery" was solid. His "Bad Meets Evil" stuff is alright, though I've always been a big fan of Royce, so I'm biased there. It's a bit of hyperbole, but it's not completely off-base, despite the Grammy wins and record sales.

But then again, my best Rap years ended about 2007 around Lupe Fiasco's "The Cool", and I've really only followed artists that could be claimed "peaked" before then, outside of a random one here or there.

Wait wait woah woah woah woah woah.  Eminem hasn't made good music since 2002?  Gonna have to strenuously disagree with that.

Otherwise, this is spot on.

Eh he hasn't been as consistent and the ambition clearly faded when he made it to the top. I love Em, but you gotta be real. Encore was such a let down. Relapse was meh. Recovery was pop trash. MMLP2 was a kind of return to form... That being said, Em at his worst is still better than 90% of rappers nowadays. His underground stuff is still pretty good though.

Man those times feel like eons ago when Shady/Aftermath/GUnit were running things.

I totally agree that this is a waste of $3,000, however, you can make the same point without inciting class warfare.  (1) how do you know that this kid is rich?; (2) if he IS so rich, do you think that he gives a shit about $3,000?  Not trying to be a dick, but this "making the rich richer" crap is unnecessary for this discussion.  The idea is a bad idea because we have the best fight song in the history of ever, and don't need some kid cobbling together Eminem and a bunch of other modern stars to make us a new one.

Unless it's a thorough fisking of a bullshit newspaper "story" exposing "major rule violations" to the tune of 20 extra minutes of stretching. But, aside from that, yes, you should never try anything else that has already been tried by Dave Brandon.

I'm okay with this (besides the part trashing Eminem), but I'm still completely uncomfortable with anyone attacking the kid's character. There are a lot of bad ideas, this does not make him a bad person. Now, if he uses his influence to push this through and get funding from my tuition money, we can revisit the topic.

This doesn't make him a bad person, but it could be looked at a lesson that prevents him from becoming a bad person.  How many business majors are complete and total self aggrandizing assholes?  Certainly not the majority, but enough that we have all had bosses who suck at their job and then wonder why their stupid underlings can't produce FUCKING RESULTS!!!

A dose in humility may steer this kid towards seeking opinions, rather than just coming up with hairbrained shit and then forcing the people around him to unwillingly do stupid stuff.

Also, his shirt kinda makes him a target.  That's the douchiest thing I've ever seen.

The caveat is that I did a lot of douchey classless stuff when I was his age, too.  I was humbled, though, and can point at things like this as reasons that sometimes piling on a person is for their own good.

This is such a terrible idea but I still can't help but feel a little bad for this poor kid.  He had no idea.

I mean, yes its a dumb idea - but who the hell are his friends that let it get this far??  Surely he was talking to people about it before it made its way to the interwebs

I mean, what kind of bro-hole are you living in, Adam???

kids these days.  smh.

Oh well.  At least we all get to be entertained and watch the mighty internet nip this in the bud.  Maybe Adam can do a case study on it afterwards for class.  Something like, "Understanding Your Customer:  How a Really Bad Idea Can Really Piss Them Off."

Kid's from Florida, cut him some slack. He either:

(a) is as smart as average Floridians or

(b) doesn't fully grasp the tradition, alumni, and prestige with which Michigan has associated itself for nearly 200 years.

Ugh! You realize that a large percentage of Florida's population are rust belt transplants, yes? The locals are a colorful bunch, admittedly, but no worse than any Michigan (or Ohio, or Alabama) redneck I've come across. The stereotypes come from metropolitan Miami, which is a wasteland for sure, but if any other state in the union can understand "one city does not a state make," it should be Michigan.

So right before the GIF being shown at the top, Musburger said to Eminem, "Hey, did you hear there might be a second Michigan fight song, and that David Banner is going to be involved? Oh, and they are going to take those ridiculous stripes off the helmets and make them all reflective silver-I hear the kids love that!"

Yeah, I have to admit I had a hell of a time figuring out what Eminem would be doing with the Incredible Hulk until I read ALL of Ace's post. #musicallyoutoftouch

1) Don't make David Banner angry.

2) I'd much rather see some creativity spent on new stadium traditions.

2a) Number one suggestion: teach the kids a version of Norfleet's Atomic Dog dance that can be performed while crammed into the stands, and play Atomic Dog on the first punt return of the third quarter, every game.

2b) Number two suggestion:  instead of a mascot (arguably the only idea worse than a new fight song), we invest in a series of (even more) cariactured versions of our rivals' mascots.  Our Sparty, Brutus and Leprechaun run out on the field, get into slap fights with each other, and fall down a lot.

(Ok, not really 2b, because taunting pretty much never pays off.   But if someone wanted to set up a Taiwanese animation of that, I would gladly kick in for the kickstarter.)
