The Commemorative Uniforms Have Landed
This was inevitable, I guess. Jib your sail and batten your hats:
I am filled with a moderate distaste, so these are probably good as far as alternate uniforms go. I rank them above the infamous MSU bumblebee jerseys. So we've got that going for us unless the gloves…
…look like that. That brings out the uniformz tag.
Upside: no helmet frippery. No numbers, either, but oddly the announcement says the Alabama uniforms will have them. It's just the rest of the season that won't:
Last season's practice of placing the player numbers on the famed winged helmet will be suspended after the season opener in Dallas.
Aaaand:
Michigan will wear its traditional home and road uniforms for the remainder of the regular season.
No six uniform changes this year, though the "regular season" leaves the door open for Commemorative Bowl Things.
BONUS: They're adding an American flag to the back of the helmet just to clear up any confusion about Michigan football's patriotism.
Good thing they cleared that up, all this time I was under the impression that UM hated America.
did (especially the engineering humanities professor I had), and all those people protesting the invasion of Grenada way back when anyway.
*neutral field in sterile pro arena
*insane ticket prices
*essentially no financial benefit
*suspended players will likely be out
*uniformz on a huge national stage instead of having two of the most classic looks on the field at the same time.
*odds are we start the season with a loss (potentially in embarrassing fashion)
*even if we pull off the upset, replay of the game over the years will always be accompanied with wondering why we had to wear those awful things during such an otherwise classic game.
I'm sure the team is glad to hear your thoughts on the uniforms they picked out. I'm sure they're also thrilled to hear your brilliant analysis of their competence relative to Alabama. Which team do you root for again?
Let's all forgo the snark and the chance to get that zinger in on DB a moment. I, too thought we were the home team. If DB shirked a chance for us to wear our blues because he wanted to get this shit bag on the field I'm going to sit here and rant impotently and still watch every UM game.
Clearly this is a question that should be asked at Big 10 media day by Ace and/or Heiko. I assume DB will be there.
I'm fairly confident we were announced as the away team several months ago.
I'd read here that one of DB's bragging points about landing this gig was that he got UM as the "home" team. Maybe I'm mistaken. No big deal either way but I'd been thinking this whole time I'd be watching them in their blues.
The sad thing is those would be fine if they changed the maize panel to white and the thin piping on the border of the panel from blue to maize (or removed it).
completely agree. I wish they would quit screwing around with the shoulder area of the Jersey. All white w/some maize & Blue piped trimmings (not on the shoulders) or try a road Maize Jersey would be ok w/me.
If M ever goes with a maize jersey, I would seriously protest it. This is not West Virginia.
Oh yeah, and the rest of it sucks too.
Michigan should have two jerseys. Home, away, and nothing else.
I agree, but it is the era we live in now. I have come to expect something like this from the athletic department. I don't expect them to make any drastic changes, but I expect something like this one or twice a year.
Let us accomodate the forces of reality and the demands of multiple uniform changes a year for commemorative games. Rivalry matches, or more exhibitions like this one.
I'd rather have a cutting-edge program that sticks out in recruits' minds, and for better or worse the program has to cater to the tastes of 17-year-olds in some ways. To me uniform changes are part of the CFB landscape today and an important part of the program's attempts to present itself. Our away jerseys are not that great to be honest. Non-dark blue or -white jerseys at a home game might see me taking up arms in protest but I have a fairly thick skin as far as aesthetics of uniforms are concerned.
...but what's happened to all that "it's Michigan, fergodsakes" rhetoric?
What does that even mean?
It is still Michigan fergodsakes. Having a different jersey for a game or two per season doesn't make us not Michigan.
It's only "the era we live in now" because some marketing idiots say so. So...
True, but just look around. There must lots of marketing idiots involved with college athletics.

My first thought upon viewing the big maize strip was that they are insidiously inching closer to all maize. Maybe the powers that be thought we'd never notice (not that they would care though)? That combined with the gloves gave me a shudder as I was suddenly reminded of some trends found in the BHGP B1G/Pro Combat line.

Not sure I'd want to see George Morales in the buff
I agree, but... i can see why the staff allows it: they need to stay current. It keeps recruits interested. thats a big part of why Oregon's recruiting was so good, they were unique. the staff does a pretty good job of keeping tradition and they haven't bastardized the unifor like rich rod.Hoke expects tradition, rich rod didnt. Maize piping... seriously? anyway, i feel your frustration but it is also kinda cool to see your favorite team sport something fresh.
whenever they need one.
like Will Lyles and Phil Knight
"and they haven't bastardized the unifor like rich rod."
What did Rich Rodriguez do to the Michigan uniforms? I remember only a home and away jersey. Help me out here.
before he retired. Rich didn't change a thing.
My thoughts exactly... Stop going the Oregon route of several uniformz and be proud of our classic uniform tradition!
As long as kids <18 years old like them, they don't bother me. They have obviously done the research to find that younger kids, future recruits, enjoy them and may have some impact in their decision of which school to choose.
Will the flag still be on the jersey? I'd rather just have it on the helmet.
And glad we are sticking to the good stuff.
I actually like these... I think they look pretty sweet.

I was prepared to hate it ... but I don't. Different, yes; awful, no.
Yeah same here. Definitely better than the MSU game jerseys we wore.
I too am relieved that Michigan does not hate 'Merica.
Also, at the risk of getting taken behind the woodshed, I would actually prefer the Pro Combat gloves, with a simple block M to these Ransom Note things.
i, for one, was confused about our patriotism.
I don't like this one much at all... but then, I thought the UTL jerseys looked horrible too before I saw them on the field of play. I still say if we're playing a team like Bama (or PSU or USC) who also sticks to the clean, classy jersey look, that we should too... but it's an away jersey, so I'm not going to get worked up about it.
Mr. Mannequin asks:
Do these Maize pants make my butt look big?
