2021 Forward Will Tschetter Commits to Michigan Comment Count

Juwan Howard landed his second commit of the 2021 class early this morning in three-star power forward Will Tschetter, who dominated his (overmatched) competition in Minnesota last year.

Tschetter is listed at 6'8", 225 pounds, and chose the Wolverines over offers from Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Virginia Tech, among others. He joins four-star wing Isaiah Barnes in the class, which could end up containing up to seven players depending upon how Howard wants to split the open scholarships between high school prospects and transfers.

Matt will have a full Hello post for Tschetter within the next day. For now, here's what he had to say about Michigan's latest commit in his last recruiting roundup:

Will would be a solid get for a class that’s expected to range from 5-7 in total. While nobody will confuse him with a potential pro, he’s likely to be an offensive matchup problem that gets tutoring as a freshman before the training wheels come off in year 2 en route to a solid and productive college career. This is the kind of big Wisconsin seemingly gets every cycle that abuses the B10 for 2-3 years.

That sounds good to me.

There's no content after the jump.

Matt's scouting report is exactly what I thought of when trying to come up with a Michigan comp.  Tschetter is the guy who is a 6th man for Iowa or Wisconsin that can play either the 4 or 5 and looks a little awkward at first.  Then you look up and he scored 8 points in ten minutes off the bench before you know what hit you.

I'm not sure if Tschetter will ever be a starter, but I think he'll be in the rotation for years and contribute with his shooting and toughness.  I love that he's a legit D-1 prospect as a TE and thus not afraid to mix it up on defense - even if his mobility limits his potential.

From the way he moves it's a good possibility that his mobility has a decently high ceiling. He looks loose through his hips but not quite sure where his arms and legs end yet. I'd bet that after a couple of years in a real S&C program his movement is closer to Iggy's than to Doyle's. He doesn't seem like he's at max effort when jumping off two feet to dunk either. So that's a point to the positive as well.

It'll be nice to have an annoyingly-good Wisconsin player playing FOR Michigan for once, especially if he doesn't try to break anyone's ankles on defense.

Barnes and Tschetter are an outstanding pair to set a base for this class. I love that they are 6'8" and fit the position-less mold that Juwan is trying to build. Like Barnes, this is a very smart, versatile player. His shot is a bit different-would like to see a higher release but it is quick and deadly. An important addition.

Love how the staff seems to be approaching recruiting, with trying to mix developmental guys with instant impact guys.  Seems like a great get.

He was overrated but he didn't suck.  There is a difference.

On the point of being overrated: I predicted that Wisconsin would be just as good without him this past season despite not really adding anyone, and sure enough, they were just as good (16th in 2019 to 22nd in 2020 in kenpom, 18th to 19th in Torvik).

I'm usually not that super excited about a three star commit, but Tschetter has a real opportunity to be a major piece to Juwan's arsenal in year two after S&C and development. I really like this addition to the team, Welcome Will!

I'm from Minnesota and had to look up where Stewartville is (hint: it's south of Rochester). Minnesota already isn't a basketball-rich state and that area definitely isn't going to be a talent hotbed. But still intrigued by his commitment and excited to see how he develops.

his release is low on jump shots, starts from his chin. may work at stewartville where his height advantage compensates for it, but it will be a problem against taller and more athletic defenders at the next level.

Big fan of Mr. T.

He is going to get stronger but watch him play. He has great hands. Can move. They will work on the release but love the 3-4 year guys to build a program. Reminds of a poor man's Juwan Howard back in the day. Guy has a sense of how to play down low.

Great pickup. This is how you build a college basketball program.
