Well, let's hope that Hoke has a good relationship with McClure and can reel him in. Would be a great addition with the recent departures.
January 18th, 2011 at 1:41 PM ^
He'd make up for the loss of Dallas Crawford.
Hoke is behind the 8-ball, but I hope he finishes strong.

I say we go with the classic "rankings don't count" and "revis was a 3 star" routine today.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:48 AM ^
Spot on!
January 18th, 2011 at 10:51 AM ^
Mike Hart was a 3 star too!?!?!?
Who knew?!?
January 18th, 2011 at 10:53 AM ^
who else?
January 18th, 2011 at 11:13 AM ^
Shoelace was a 4-star, but at CB. Wonder if he'd even be rated/ranked as a QB...
January 18th, 2011 at 11:35 AM ^
Take a look at M's recent top 100 recruits, per Scou (major contributors in bold, Those Who Did Not Stay in italics, no judgment rendered on the rest (albeit charitably so in the non-2010 cases):
- 2010: Devin Gardner, Cullen Christian, Josh Furman (no flameouts, but none made major contributions as freshman)
- 2009: J.T. Turner, Will Campbell, Craig Roh
- 2008: BooBoo Cissouko, Brandon Smith, Sam McGuffie, Daryl Stonum.
- 2007: Ryan Mallett, Donovan Warren, Tony Clemons, Ryan Van Bergen, Michael Williams
Possible conclusions:
- Scout is not so good at rating.
- Landing a top-100 recruit is no gaurantee of success (current most-likely-to-be-drafted-the-first-round, Taylor Lewan, was ranked 280-something)
- Michigan is either snake-bitten in recruiting or not doing something right on the coaching side, given the a high propensity for flaming out highly rated prospects.
January 18th, 2011 at 1:51 PM ^
We just ran into some bad luck, that's all.
You need guys that are hard workers and fit your system.
January 18th, 2011 at 1:56 PM ^
I consider Donovan Warren to have been a contributor.
January 18th, 2011 at 3:49 PM ^
fair enough. And Ryan Mallet did enough of the right things to help beat Penn State with Henne nursing an injury in his (Ryan's) freshman year.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:47 AM ^
Frost has dropped substantially...wow.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:49 AM ^
too high on scout. rivals is where he's top 50.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:51 AM ^
Never pay too much attention to Scout (mainly Rivals) but you would think there wouldn't be as much disgreement between the two.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:55 AM ^
One may be ranking him as a WR (where he has expressed interest in playing) and the other as a LB (where many project him to be most successful)
January 18th, 2011 at 11:04 AM ^
Rivals ranks Frost as an ATH given his flexibility between WR and LB. Nearly all services agree his real future is at LB.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:48 AM ^
I feel like a thesis coming due that I am completely unprepared for and have no idea where I am going to pull the content from.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:48 AM ^
Seems to me that defensive recruits are their only concern right now.
January 18th, 2011 at 3:48 PM ^
Shouldn't getting a DC be a concern also? As part of getting defensive recruits?
January 18th, 2011 at 10:48 AM ^
Fisher.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:50 AM ^
Where is Leonidas?
January 18th, 2011 at 11:00 AM ^
Pssh. Forget Leonidas. I wanna know where Godot is.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:51 AM ^
Other names of "interest": AZ OG Cyrus Hobbi, MD DT Darrien Cooper, CA WR Devin Lucien, GA DE Ray Drew, FL TB/CB Tre Mason, and FL S Karlos Williams.
Other than the OP's list, and these six - UM is essentially absent from the lists of the Top 300.
Also, Scout lists K. Jones, Countess, and Fisher as soft commits

Victors_Valiant Victors_Valiant
Take it FWIW. Also, that is not me.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:57 AM ^
that could be names of "interest"...
I thought Karlos Williams was FSU all the way... guess I was not 100% correct...
If Hoke could just steal one of these guys I'd feel better... I need that sort of gratification... warranted or not.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:03 AM ^
Noticed that Michigan is a "School of Interest" for not-yet-committeds Ray Drew (5* DE from GA, #33 overall) and Christian Westerman (5* OL from AZ, #17 overall). Can we dream?
(Also, Didn't realize that Jernigan hasn't committed yet. Any chance he'd re-open to us since the CC, or was that the problem in the first place?)
January 18th, 2011 at 11:08 AM ^
Westerman is and will be a Longhorn.
The Drew ship has also sailed.
Jernigan will likely be a Seminole or Gator.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:13 AM ^
Damn man, we are grasping at straws today, don't rain on our parade.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:18 AM ^
Sorry. Just trying to inform my fellow MGoBloggers.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:15 AM ^
well dang, then
January 18th, 2011 at 11:21 AM ^
Proof that the drew ship has sailed?
January 18th, 2011 at 11:27 AM ^
He hasn't visited Michigan, hasn't set up a visit to Michigan, was considering us because of Avery Walls (who isn't coming here anymore), and I believe someone else (Tom maybe?) said so.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:09 AM ^
I remember reading he was really interested in Michigan and loved his visit. His concern was the 3-3-5. He didn't want to get double-teamed CONSTANTLY like Mike Martiin!
Then reports came out that he wanted to be closer to home. Maybe that was the case but I had a feeling that the 3-3-5 was the BIGGEST problem. I don't blame him for not wanting to be double-teamed ALL THE TIME.
Maybe Michigan can get back into the mix? Maybe Hoke, being the HC and DL coach, can pull some strings...
January 18th, 2011 at 11:11 AM ^
Of the names listed (outside of our commits), we really only have a shot at Cooper - who is a long-shot at best.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:17 PM ^
That interest was from when RR was coach. Hoke "Peaced" Lucien, Cooper dropped us with the coaching change, Drew interest was because of Walls who didn't like the uncertainty' and the other three were also RR guys. Fisher decommitted and isn't a soft verbal.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:52 AM ^
McClure would be a nice pickup with the departure of Crawford.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:55 AM ^
For those of you more knowledgable than me, has Michigan ever had a worse recruiting class? No offense to any of the young men that have committed of course! I mean as a whole, not its separate parts.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:01 AM ^
the top 30.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:06 AM ^
No doubt this will be our lowest rated class as a whole in a long time. Part of that is simply because of the size, part of that is because we've sucked for the last three years, and part of that is because of the coaching change (and timeliness of it).
Things we need to d oto have a better class next year - don't suck, and don't change coaches.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:16 AM ^
with not sucking and not changing coaches next year. That sounds like a terrible plan.
/s
January 18th, 2011 at 4:04 PM ^
The size of the class isn't the problem. We have enough spaces for a good class - they just need to be filled.
RR was still recruiting well. Tim had us rated just behind OSU, ND and Nebraska before he was fired - and that was while he was being held back by uncertainty about his status.
I think our problem is almost entirely a result of Brandon's screwup.
Hoke is in a very difficult position so I will agree that this is likely to be our worst class in my memory.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:57 AM ^
And Lucien is the #45 WR.
I thought his Senior highlight reel was ABSURDLY awesome, but ESPN has him ranked lower than Scout, so the opinion on him is definitely mixed. Seems like the new staff should know him well since they offered and he was essentially in their backyard...
I think they get a pass on Lucien...until he starts putting up crazy numbers at UCLA.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:03 AM ^
Look, I wanted to get Lucien too, but take a look at his offer list, or more specifically, the Pac Ten schools that didn't offer him, and you'll see why he's not ranked higher, and likely why he didn't get an offer from us either.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:07 AM ^
are we really competing with USC right now? Yes, even with their probation?
January 18th, 2011 at 11:09 AM ^
We offered him as a DB and he didn't like that. If we offered him as a WR he would be blue by now.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:13 AM ^
The truth is we are all fans who want UM to perform well each Sat afternoon, but we are only fans. We are not in any meetings, prep rooms, weight rooms, film rooms or on the field with any current players. In addition we are not scouts traveling the country watching actual games, watching full game tape, not an edited highlight tape. These coaches are getting paid for a reason. We lost recruits because we started 5-0 and then started losing, losing caused anxiety in recruits not a coaching change. Lets trust the coaching staff that they are building a program that will succeed now and in the future. Point being with Lucien, although his tape looked impressive, great hands and body control he didn’t strike me as being quick or fast.. But as stated if you are on the west coast and don’t have offers from USC,
January 18th, 2011 at 11:49 AM ^
amen brotha!
January 18th, 2011 at 11:52 AM ^
mad copy paste skillz.
January 18th, 2011 at 1:25 PM ^
The new coaching staff told him they want him at D-Back and he wants to be a receiver so he eliminated us. Thought I saw that either in a TomVH note or Rivals article last night.
