Big Ten Logo/Division Names revealed at noon on BTN

Submitted by Tim on

There's a teleconference a half hour before, so at least the division names should be available around 11:35.

I don't mind them.  They're kind of catchy, and will provide for a lot of jokes while tailgating.

We, obviously, should have been in the Leaders division though.

the old school Big Ten Commish type names that had been thrown out.

Given the lack of feisability of directionality (East/West), school affiliation (Bo/Woody), or region (Great Lake/Great Plain) the names were bound to suck no matter what.

Once upon a time when the league was actually the Big Nine (funny how it was OK once not to have an even number - I guess it was just the style at the time), U of Chicago was a member athletically. Later it decided to drop out when it couldn't admit players who could both have hopes of ever graduating AND also play at the rising caliber of play. They do however participate as noted in academic superstructure meetings.

It seems like the trophies and awards were named with an old-new theme. Find someone from the past and then find someone more recent. When these things pop up (like New Coke, the "new" NBC logo, the original Infiniti car ads which showed NO cars) one has to wonder what the brainstorming sessions were like and what ideas were rejected.

This was the one trophy name they actually got right.

I can't get over how they felt the need to "represent" generations and teams with these odd pairings. Yeah, Pat Fitzgerald and Dick Butkus are practically football equals... right. Tim McGarigle was as good as Fitzgerald. Jonas Mouton will do more in the NFL than Ftizgerald.

I think we should update all trophies. Let's call it the Heisman-Tebow trophy from now on
