OT: Would a white guy wearing a dreadlock wig be offensive?
Long story short: I recently bought a 16 jersey and wanted to do my best Denard impersonation by wearing a dreadlock wig to the game Saturday. I think most of the fans would get a kick out of it, but would any of you find this offensive if you saw it? I want to ask the general population before doing it. Like I said, I'm white.
EDIT: Ok, for everyone advising me not to wear blackface makeup, I appreciate the input, but no shit...

It cannot, no matter what anyone thinks, be offensive unless you intend to offend.
If you don't mean to offend, and someone is offended, that's called hypersensitivity- in which case, they are the offender.
You clearly would be supporting the guy- if not glorifying him.
How anyone could miss that point and find it offensive is beyond me...
I say wear them without hesitation!!!

Exactly. I can't even believe that anyone could possibly find something meant as flattery offensive. That takes quite the inferential leap on their part.

what you did there.

Your definition of what can be deemed offensive is completely wrong. You obviously have never taken any corporate legal compliance training before.

Is that where I should go to learn about cultural sensitivity?

Some of the more self-righteous Rastafari might be offended, because dreads hold religious significance for them. But if they're that uptight, who cares what they think?
September 23rd, 2010 at 10:15 AM ^
uptight Rastafarians at the Big House on game day.

those rapscallions, getting all drunk up on Geritol, and telling you to sit down the whole game.

A cumulative probability problem.

Let's go with the thought that the likelihood of any one person getting pissed at you is small -how 'bout 1/1000?

There's 109,000 people at the game. Let's guess that only people in your section have a reasonable shot at seeing you -there's like what 42 sections? That's roughly 2600 people.

Expected number of people pissed off 2.6.

Chances of not pissing a given person off 999/1000 looks ok but cumulative chance of getting away without agita almost zero.

Several people will be ticked.

Of course you could also estimate the cumulative probability of highfives and compare lol.

Sorry for the stats I had my second latte so I am overly awake
Just don't paint your face black, and you should be fine!

As a hockey player, I am OFFENDED by people wearing mullet wigs at hockey games for a promotion. It's offensive.

No. But I would advise against the blackface.
September 23rd, 2010 at 9:55 AM ^
No not at all! But remember that U of M is a very leftist PC school and that it might become offensive if you go as a lesbian albino with dreadlocks.

going to a game, wearing a dread wig, superman tights, and a blue cape. Though instead of the "S", I would have a "16".
Then I realized I am pushing 40, and said to myself. Are you an Idiot? Grow Up!!!
If I were a student, in the student section, it would be cool...
September 23rd, 2010 at 10:14 AM ^
I think most people would get it. I think it would be offensive if you made your face look black.

White rasta

Is Denard actually a rasta? Or does he just sport the unwashed/uncut hairstyle?
September 23rd, 2010 at 11:01 AM ^
he is too stupid to make up his own mind on something and you guys all go off making fun of him. Shame on you.
and dodo.

is our own Clarence Beeks didn't suggest (then cut and paste or link) Dan Aykroyd's Louis Winthorp III NYE train-riding Rastafarian.
Randolph Duke: "Where's Beeks? Where in the hell is Beeks?"
September 23rd, 2010 at 12:00 PM ^
now if you were to put black face paint on, I'd consider it offensive. Otherwise, you have my approval.
Even though I thought it was stupid, think about the Manny hype that went on in Dodgers Stadium - they had a whole section named after him in the outfield (Manny Land) where people wore dread wigs and all kinds of stupid stuff.

Off Topic post of the year.

As long as it's obvious that you're wearing the dreads in support of Denard then I would think it would be alright. I'm sure if someone confronted you about it you could explain yourself. However, I am a white guy so I'm not sure that I'm the best judge.
September 23rd, 2010 at 1:46 PM ^
need to stop being sooo sensative!!
September 23rd, 2010 at 1:56 PM ^
Rock the dreads just remember so smile like a motherfucker and you should be golden!!!!

Is it offensive for a black man to dress up as Superman for Halloween?
September 23rd, 2010 at 3:20 PM ^
At this point I'd be offended if you didn't wear the dreds.
September 23rd, 2010 at 3:41 PM ^
OF course its not racist....dreads arent ONLY for black people and if your black and think that thats racist than YOUR probably a racist yourself....

Since we don't seem to have this conversation about mustaches when someone has an awesome mustache, I don't see why we should have to have it about dreads.
September 23rd, 2010 at 4:30 PM ^
Wear your hair, or wig however you want... If anyone gets pissed off tell them to calm down, and stop being overly sensitive. Seriously, I love watermelon, and I'm not being racist or offensive by eating it, unless someone is way too sensitive.
What makes things offensive is the meaning behind them... Is it offensive that I currently have my shoes untied?
September 23rd, 2010 at 4:38 PM ^
Maybe I am being overly sensitive.
Have fun and knock yourself out.
