Terrelle Pryor Odds-on Favorite for Heisman. Really?!
Maybe he's improved a lot since last season?

I'm not saying he's going to win it, but who else have as big a 'hype train' coming into this season? It's not always the most talented, it's not always the most deserved, it's just the most publicized individual college football trophy.

I'm going to start a MGoBlog doppleganger site. It'll look the same as Brian Cook's outstanding effort. The site will feature a board, diaries, and a front page. Even links to other sites and mods to help out. We will feature articles about how Michigan is going to go undefeated every year, (it'll be a competitive site with any ND board, so I can already imagine how much fun I'll have). Also, there will be a user named "Mathfreak" that will do a statistical evaluation "proving" that not only will we go undefeated, but also how our two QBs, a RB and a CB are going to be the Top 4 finalists for the Heisman every year.
I'll even rename myself, "Brian Coke". That way, when the inevitable troll asks, "Dude, are you on crack?" I'll say, "Why, yes! And thank you for asking."

... makes you mad, don't look at the vegas odds for garret gilbert to win it.

With Tebow and McCoy in the NFL, what else do you expect? Dual threat QB's are exciting and often get a lot of love when it comes to choosing Heisman candidates. Of the players in the running, with the exception of Ingram, the media really has no one to look to but Pryor. Locker and Luck might make a push. No big deal though, if NCAA '11 is accurate, Denard will win back to back Heismans in 2011 and 2012 (3 time national champs too... haha)
August 22nd, 2010 at 12:59 PM ^
You know that Pryor is a really talented QB on a really talented team, right? I'm not sure if he should be the front runner, but top three is not crazy at all.

Has the best player in college football won the stupid thing in the past decade? There can't be more than a single year (maybe two) of the past 10 in which the objectively "best" player won the stupid trophy. That's why I don't understand the whining: if he looks remotely competent and OSU has a great season, he would likely win it. The criteria is being the best player on the best team; that's it.
August 22nd, 2010 at 1:27 PM ^
Unfortunately, this is what the Heisman has become in the last 10-15 years. Heck, I wouldn't even say the best player on the the best team. It's really whether you're the QB or RB on one of the best teams in the country.
August 22nd, 2010 at 2:36 PM ^
The best player in college football hasn't won the Heisman since 1997.

When a dude from osu, says TP really doesn't deserve it -- that is all!
August 22nd, 2010 at 7:17 PM ^
'Deserve' ain't got nothing to do with it.

Its still just fallout hype from the Rose Bowl win over Oregon. It will fade again, once he starts throwing wounded duck passes in games.
August 22nd, 2010 at 1:15 PM ^
I understand how distasteful it may be to M fans, but if TP keeps his mistakes down and OSU has another great year, he's bound to be in NY in December.
Maybe a chunk of DILITHIUM can stop him...

QBs win mostly on passing yards, with TDs, completion percentage and a couple other stats thrown in. No way TP will have the stats as top QB and that doesn't even account for RBs.

Those are Tebow's stats from 2007, when he won the Heisman. I would hardly call them mediocre, hell I don't think I've ever had a season that good with one of Michigan's QBs in the NCAA video games. I'd say the odds of Pryor putting up those kind of numbers are slim to none.
August 23rd, 2010 at 2:57 AM ^
Through 12 regular-season games, Pryor passed for fewer yards and had a lower passer rating than Tate Forcier. (He inched ahead after the bowl.)
August 23rd, 2010 at 9:02 AM ^
And if he doesn't rush for 23 Touchdowns, he's not even mentioned for the Heisman. (Heck, if Dennis Dixon stayed healthy...but, I digress). The point wasn't that Pryor would put up the numbers....the point was that running QB's couldn't win the Heisman.

If that wasn't one of the great WTF Heisman moments of all time, I don't know what is...

I don't know about that. Tebow's passing numbers alone were phenomenal. To put them into perspective, our school record for passing touchdowns is 27. He threw 32 - against only six picks. When he also rushed for 23 TDs, it made it a no-brainer. He was not a one-dimensional QB. He had an unreal all-around season.
August 22nd, 2010 at 2:33 PM ^
Did they take into account their inevitable losses to the U at home and WI on the road, as well as a probable loss to M in the season finale? Do Heisman voters deduct points for crying after a close loss? For TP's sake, I hope not. Everybody cries when they lose anyway, right TP?

can you imagine how bad his speech would be...that would be classic.
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:10 PM ^
His stats aren't close to Heisman worthy. I don't even have him as a top 5 candidate. As of now, he is a pretty good player on a title contender. Pryor has yet to have a great game against an elite defense.
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:21 PM ^
Seems like most everybody around here gives him no shot at improving over his first two seasons. It's an article of faith around here that Denard is going to be vastly better in games than last year, so I don't know why everybody is assuming that TP can't improve year-to-year as well. RR was recruiting Pryor for very good reasons.
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:39 PM ^
I think that TP will be a bit better this year than he was last year. However, I believe folks have shown that almost universally the biggest jump in production, ceteris paribus, is between the first and second years of serious playing time. So while I think Pryor will be better this year, I think his marginal improvement will be less than it was from the previous year to last year.
I also agree that there was a good reason that Rodriguez pursued Pryor; I think Pryor would have been phenomenal in our offense. I think his skill set is much less suited for being an excellent quarterback in OSU's offense. As it is, he seems to me to be an occasionally dangerous game manager.

August 22nd, 2010 at 3:52 PM ^
I think RR was recruiting Pryor because he knew that he would flourish in his system. I think he would have too. I still believe that TP is a bad fit at OSU, and that if he does not break out his final two seasons at OSU, it will because of Tressel's style of play.
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:21 PM ^
If Pryor plays well and OSU doesn't scuttle in winnable games, then certainly he should be considered for the Heisman. That said, every prominent player in college football falls under that same general standard - win and play well, people will pay attention. Heck, the Emu was a preseason Heisman favorite according to some non-Lou Holtz people. Pryor is probably the most hyped player returning this year (at least offensively), so of course he'll get some love. But to win the Heisman, you have to show up and be one of the best players on the field every game, an ability Pryor has yet to showcase in the 2 years he's played at OSU.

PRYOR SUCKS!!!!
How about we beat him, keep him from winning the Big Ten Title, not have him in a BCS game, or SOMETHING, before we go crazy all day every day on how he's really not any good.

If he's the best QB they can think of, they really should think about candidates at other positions. This is a guy who was held under 100 passing yards four times last season. He has great potential but hasn't come close to putting it together for an entire season.
If he's the favorite, it has to be a pretty open race. How about a defensive candidate?
