OT: Most unimpressive championship trophy?
Maybe it's just me, but considering the mind-boggling amount of world-wide hype over the World Cup, the championship trophy appears to me to be a little runty and unimpressive. For all of the hysteria over winning the Cup, shouldn't the trophy be a little bigger? Shouldn't it be slightly more difficult to carry around, like Lord Stanley's Cup?

It's not the size of the trophy, it's what you do with it.
Gross...
the wimbledon trophies deff have to be in consideration for as prestigious as the tournament is. i mean the womens trophy is a plate, what are you gonna do, serve hor d' oeuvres on it?
I agree with the world cup trophy being unimpressive in contrast to the global appeal of the sport. I think this applies with both the Lombardi trophy and Larry O'Brien trophy (NFL and NBA) as well. While they have cool designs, the size does the accomplishment no justice. I guess those rings the players get make up for it though. The Stanley Cup is what a trophy should be, and the commissioner's trophy (MLB) is pretty sweet as well.
That trophy's like three feet tall . . . how big would you want it to be?
You do know that the world cup trophy is made of solid gold, do you?
I doubt that. A standard bar of solid gold weighs about as much as the Stanley Cup. The players wave that World Cup trophy around like a flag, and it's twice as tall as a bar of gold is long. It's only 18-carat gold, but there's no way it's solid all the way through.
It's actually hollow, at least according to wikipedia:
The trophy stands 36.5 centimetres (14.4 inches) tall and is made of 5 kg (11 lb) of 18 carat (75%) gold with a base (13 centimetres [5.1 inches] in diameter) containing two layers of malachite. It has been asserted that the trophy is hollow; if, as is claimed, it were solid, the trophy would weigh 70-80 kg and would be too heavy to lift.
Doesn't matterr, IMO, if it still looks like shit.
Don't forget, the Stanley Cup started as just that, a cup:
It's growth has been over 100+ years, creating what we now know and love. The tradition and legacy of the Cup are what make it sooooo cool, which is manifested in the design.
The best trophies are the ones with history (like the jug). The rest are just something to hold when celebrating victory.

Shouldn't the World Cup be a cup?
This trophy signifies why Donald Trump is the champion of life. I don't know if his name got engraved on his trophy or not, but one can not argue with how impressive it looks. I present to you the Melania in all its glory. Behold!
to becoming Hugh Hefner. I wonder if Trump actually "sleeps" with her or is it just a sham? Assuming the Viagra works for The Donald and they actually have sex, does either really think other cares about them?? I suppose Bob Seger got it right 35 years ago..."I used her she used me but neither one cared. We were getting our share."
Though Melania is a hell of a trophy.
But it has wonderful cups.
"the wimbledon trophies deff have to be in consideration for as prestigious as the tournament is. i mean the womens trophy is a plate, what are you gonna do, serve hor d' oeuvres on it?"
Nope, she can serve my sandwich on it.....
Until I found out it was made of solid gold. I don't really care what its shaped like if its made of solid gold.
And the reason they were lifting it up readily at the ceremony is because they only get to take a gold-plated replica home with them.
I've never been a big fan of the NBA trophy, myself. The WC trophy at least looks kind of interesting, where the NBA trophy looks like some kind of attempt at modern art. The Vince Lombardi is also a little underwhelming to me. The design could be a bit fancier I guess, but I like the simple football on a stand design. What gets that one for me is that its for the most watched annual sporting even in the world and the thing is really quite small.
The NCAA also hands out some pretty lame trophies for national champioinships. That's one thing we have to be thankful for with the BCS is that there is a really awesome trophy involved. Nothing, I think, will ever top the Stanely Cup at any level.
I seem to remember a certain treasured AP national championship trophy as being rather unimpressive.
Gaudy, over the top trophies tell me that the awarder is trying too hard to convince the world that the game is important. See the BCS trophy, most crappy bowl games, the land grant trophy, etc.
The greatest trophies are simple elegant and iconic. I'd put the world cup in that category
While we're on the topic....
Best: Little Brown Jug (Michigan/Minnesota) - crusty paint, ancient, just looks like it belongs in a locker that Bo used to coach in front of....
Worst: Land Grant Trophy (MSU/PSU) - too plain, no history
I'm not a fan of the Land Grand Trophy, but I don't know if "plain" is the word I'd use to describe it:
The words "painfully ugly" come to mind.
The World Series trophy is pretty lame. A bunch of pennants on flagpoles. Woohoo!
Leave it to the PGA...
Agree that the WC trophy is a little undersized, but like the Stanley Cup, it's cool because there's only one of it, so it only temporarily resides in the home of the winner. That's how team sports trophies should be. It looks silly when they interview a Laker player and you see like eight Larry O'Brien Trophies in the background. A great trophy shouldn't be "collectable."
...has THE best trophy in sports.
The World Cup trophy is fey, just like the sport is represents...so in that sense it is completely appropriate.
I kinda like the crystal College Football Championship trophy also.
NBA, NFL and MLB trophies are all pretty subpar in my opinion...not that i wouldn't mind winning any of them though...
is kinda lame. And begging to be fumbled.
I can't understand why it's detachable. It's a trophy, not a toy.
I heard he had a 33.3% chance of winning....repeating of course.
Actually that trophy is pretty bad ass...I just wanted to make a joke.
at least he had chicken.
