Thank you for this rational take. I know we're all upset that he fell so far, but acting like teams were not judging his talent is absurd.
It's been reported that it is a similar condition to Nick Fairley. Fairley had the best season of his career in 2016, but then his condition worsened in the blink of an eye and he hasn't played a snap since. Like you said, it's something that could never be a problem or could manifest right away. Can't really blame teams for not wanting to take the gamble with a high pick.
It's a bummer for Mo, but with his work ethic he can make it up with a monster 2nd contract. Plus he'll be medically monitored constantly so it doesn't sneak up on him and he can live a healthy life.
yeah, i love Mo... but i think people let their emotions get the best of them in internalizing his draft fall.
Picks have value, both percieved (ie what they are worth to other teams trading for them) and actual (contract value, opportunity cost of players picked or not picked).
an ACL is one thing... but football folks understand that, they know the rehab schedule, the process etc...
the Heart... well, that's another thing entirely... its a complete unknown and can literally end a players life...
The Red Wings Jiri Fischer's heart stopped beating while on the bench a long time ago... might have been the second scariest thiing i've seen in a sports event, just behind Clint Malachuk having his jugular sliced on the ice.
Hope Mo's condition is stable and can be managed... because he can be dominating force, even if the Raiders decide to use him situationally to reduce potential strain.
I'll predict right now that barring new, non-heart injury, Hurst will last longer in the NFL than Antonio Callaway.
What a steal.
All that I ask is that Mo doesn't get the same haircut as the owner.
The Lions continue their long history of rarely drafting Wolverines—just 9 total since the 1970 draft, and only 4 of those in the first four rounds.
And one of those, Dwight Hicks in the '78 draft, never signed with the Lions but went on to become an All-Pro and Pro-Bowler with the 49ers, winning two Super Bowls.
Why Raiders Win
Lions never do.
Go Get'em Mo. Congrats big fella.
Gruden is smart and a great coach. He knows a steal when sees one.
Great pick by the Raiders! Good luck blocking Hurst and Khalil Mack!
Lets Go Mo!
Mahomes. Keenum. Rivers. Get in his belly.
