Spring is Here - Tiger Opener Tomorrow - Season Predictions
Mates,
If I'm not mistaken, tomorrow is opening day for the tigers. When I lived downstate that was a fun thing, even when the tigers weren't any good. Well, looks like those times have returned. Their grapefruit league record was 13-15. Since last season they jettisoned Ausmus. Their opening day roster looks like this:
POSITION | STARTER | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th |
Catcher | James McCann | John Hicks | Derek Norris
First Base | Miguel Cabrera | John Hicks | Victor Martinez
Second Base | Dixon Machado | Alexi Amarista
Third Base | Jeimer Candelario | Nicholas Castellanos | Dixon Machado
Shortstop | Jose Iglesias | Alexi Amarista | Dixon Machado
Left Field | Mikie Mahtook | JaCoby Jones | Jim Adduci
Center Field | Leonys Martin | JaCoby Jones | Victor Reyes
Right Field | Nicholas Castellanos | Mikie Mahtook | Victor Reyes
Designated Hitter | Victor Martinez | Miguel Cabrera
Starting Pitcher | Michael Fulmer | Jordan Zimmermann | Matthew Boyd | Mike Fiers | Francisco Liriano |
Relief Pitcher | Alex Wilson | Joe Jimenez | Drew VerHagen | Blaine Hardy | Daniel Stumpf |
Closer | Shane Greene |
I haven't followed them closely other than to know last year started out okay and then went downhill hard and fast, with i think a 64-98 final record. Yeesh.
Anyway, today's question is/are these: What are your predictions for the tigers this year, and will you be at opening day (Looks like rain tomorrow)?
XM
Tigers bad, win maybe 65 games
Cubs good, win 92-95 games
Cubs over Astros in 7
Tigers stink up the league and finish in last place (only 1 game worse than the CWS though!)
Tribe win the AL, Rockies win the NL. Cleveland finally wins it all this year! Cubs miss the playoffs.
another high draft pick
Tigers will go 70-92. Feel like this is the Yankees' year, as awful as that sounds.
Why comment on a baseball thread,if you hate baseball?
I predict 77-85
Gardenhire works a small miracle getting this team near .500
football and basketball and also find enjoyment in baseball? Way to slow for my taste and wayyyy too many meaningless games
Good for you.
Go Tigers.

There should but one other reason that is the only reason: 97.1 sucks as with pretty much all sports talk. Idiots who know nothing.
That may be the 2nd worst Tigers team i have ever seen. Holy fuck.
I really feel for the older Tiger fans. They may never see the playoffs the rest of their lives. Its going to take a while.
Yikes!

Tigers shock the world and finish 85-77 and narrowly miss wild card. Miggy rebounds for .300/30/100+; Fullmer wins 17 with sub 3 ERA; Castellanos turns into JD and cranks 35. After a good 2018, youth movement in full swing in 2019 as farm produces more solid talent and we challenge for ALC next season. And Tom Brookens returns in 2019 as our third base coach.
I'd say that sounds like a worst case scenario for the Tigers, but I suspect that if Miggy truly rebounds, we may be looking to deal him near the deadline to a contender.

No one is taking his 150+ million dollar guaranteed contract. Ever. He's our future hall of famer, just enjoy his numbers rise, that's what he's good for now.

IDK guys, I'm thinking it's gonna be a pretty good season actually.
open up wallet and pay for the talent, they should be good for the money spent. Hoping my Rockies can take the next step and get deeper into the playoffs this year. If their young pitchers improve a little it's possible, but never get my hopes up too high.
Always love opening day as hope springs eternal.
0-182
Are you insinuating that because the Tigers will be 0-162, they will be automatically given a playoff spot, which they will continue to get swept for three straight series (Because they get to keep playing if they keep losing of course), and before declaring them both World Series Champs and and Worst team of all time, they will be forced to play a best 9 of 17 series against the Little League World Series Champs, where those 11 year old japanese kids hit dingers left and right in route to a sweep? I like it, 0-182 it is!
some of their losses will be so bad they count twice?
No. Not Playoffs. Bad. Very bad. 65-70 wins bad.
66-96 with signs of growth from Candelario, Norris, and Boyd. They trade Greene, Liriano, and Castellanos at the deadline and are pleasently enjoyable to watch because the expectations are so low that they're impossible to disappoint.
There isn't an inspiring choice to be drafted #1 overall like Strasberg or Harper.
Blech.
That they don't sell out tomorrow. Ouch.
Go Koalas! Is that a team?
Isn't Opening Day usually on a Monday (and in April)? Why is it tomorrow?
Jim Delaney
I thought it was a combination of giving more make-up opportunities early in the season as well as allowing for a slightly earlier start to the playoffs to accomodate the wild card games. But I'm not really sure.
It's been in March before. This will be the earliest ever but March 30 was opening day in 2014. CBA called for 3-4 more days off for each team during the year so they moved the start up a few days rather than back any further.
so cellar dwellers, right from the start. 63 - 99
It'll be a heavy-loss season, but hopefully not a wasted one. With luck, by the end of the year, they'll have a better idea who can play and who can't. They'll also get V-Mart's contract off the books (hopefully, he'll have a farewell tour he can be proud of). And we'll see what prospects they get when certain players get peddled at the trading deadline.
Bottom line: If they lose fewer than 100 games I'll be pleasantly surprised. If they lose fewer than 90 I think Gardy ought to be Manager of the Year.
It just feels impossible to think about baseball. The Tigers suck, Michigan's in the F4, and it's still 4 degrees outside.
I feel sorry for the team on opening day, that place might be a quarter full. The city will be bumping like it always is, but no one's going through those gates.
The good thing about baseball is that, if you aren't supposed to be good, nobody cares how much you suck. Some level of baseball will be played by the Detroit Tigers, and I'm fine with that.
