Joel Klatt ranks UM at #4 after week 1
Just saw this very short video on youtube about Joel Klatt's top 10 teams following week 1 and was surprised to see UM at #4. All that was said about us is that our defense is more faster and physical than last years, and that we completely dominated Florida and it wasnt close. What are your guys' thoughts on this ranking? Too high, too low? Personally I think its a little high and would put us at 7 or 8.

Three of the top five after one week.
SEC dominance.

and not more physicaler. Mitigates being more faster somewhat.

I think McElwain said UM is most better at the physical.

Likely #8 in the AP that comes out today. Expect a lot of refinements over the next month as all two-deep position players get a shot to show how much they can contribute. Then a 5 touchdown whooping of MSU over Columbus Day weekend to get us all in a frenzy. Top 4 by then.

clay travis from fox sports has 1. Bama 2. Michigan

Ok, Bama and OSU are squarely 1-2 right now. Penn State I'd argue should be #3 right now
- Florida State just lost it's best player for the season
- USC struggled with Western at home for the entire game and Darnold didn't look a Heisman contender
- Clemson is unknown
- OU looked good
- Washington let Rutgers hang around a lot longer than a top 10 team should
- Okie State can't play defense
- Wisconsin - despite the pretty score - nearly went into halftime down against Utah State again
I think it's easy to look at Michigan's throttling of Florida and argue we should be #4 or #5 right now.

Which, for people who read the post, isn't a good look.
Hey, disagree if you want, but at least use substance to engage the reasoning.
It's all irrelevant anyway--we'll see how things shake out when teams play each other. But if PSU is overrated, that will be exposed on the field.
September 5th, 2017 at 1:31 PM ^
Why rebuttal with substance? His reasoning for Clemson was that they were unknown. I'm pretty sure PSU is just as unknown after playing Akron.
There was really no discernable difference between Oklahoma's, Clemson's, or PSU's performances, yet OU gets a "looked good", PSU gets lobbed up to #3, and Clemson is "?".

Clemson lost their starting QB, RB, and #1 WR from their national title team. Penn State got back their starting QB and heisman level RB. I know we all love to hate on Penn State (myself included), but where do you put them in the rankings otherwise?

I saw on Sunday that Kanell, who loves to give it to UM, is doing a top 8 on his Twitter. He also had Michigan at #4 I believe, higher than OSU. Left Penn State out of the top 8 so all those fans were jumping on him. He had some funny responses about playing Akron.
Still was surprised he'd rank Michigan that high when we all know he hates the team.

While young, we are one of the most talented and well coached teams in the country. That said, does not matter where we are ranked now. Blowing out Cini, Air Force, Perdue, etc. is not going to tell us much either. The next big challenge is at PSU. We handle them like UF or how we did last year, then #4 might be too low.

accurate confidence after a week's time, but because we are a culture obsessed with calculating where we stand at any given point, I would rank Michigan top 10.
First off, I don't care about experience if you team is well-prepared each week and carries out its assignments, then your play will dictate your ability and success. There are enough measuring sticks upcoming to demonstrate where we stand.
I don't want to be Top 4, I want this team to be competing for the top spot. That deesn't depend on what others think and how they rank, it's how the team performs and decides for itself where it belongs. Performance not politics will determine that. Just compete and perform each week, and the rankings will eventually reflect that.

Loves him some Michigan this year. He was one of the few analysts that constantly defended them throughout the offseason and made a bold prediction that they will go 11-1 and beat OSU. After week 1, Joel Klatt is looking pretty good. We will see how it goes as the season moves forward.

This coming from the analyst who turned into a UCLA cheerleader during the comeback the other night and started saying "we" and "us" when UCLA completed the comeback win over A&M.
I know he is a UCLA alumnus, but I don't think I have ever seen Herbstreit, Spielman, Griese, heck even Millen ever do this in a game no matter how crazy it got at the end for their alma maters.

Fair enough. But what's that got to do with Joel Klatt?
September 5th, 2017 at 2:00 PM ^
Didn't Klatt play for CU?
September 5th, 2017 at 1:15 PM ^
But it is meaningless. Ratings are just for discussion until about week five.Let's win this on the field. I think we have a top defense, great potential at receiver and special teams. Solid group of running backs. (Isaac finally is living up to his recruiting hype.), the offensive line is greatly improved but QB scares me. Speight kept Florida in the game with passes that were either two high or three feet out of bounds. If we had consistentlly good quarterbacking, I would say we can beat anybody - but we don't.

It sounds like he's placing a lot of faith in dominating a good SEC opponent when almost everyone in front of us (save for FSU-Bama) scheduled a bodybag game, where you learn very little about the team unless they struggle or lose.
This team is not top-4 good right now. A top 4 team would not throw two consecutive pick sixes or they would consistently finish drives that would've put that game well out of reach by the end of the third quarter. But you've got a lot of young guys learning to play at the collegiate level.
If everything clicks, and a few breaks go Michigan's way throughout the season, it's not totally inconceivable that they get to that point. But they're not there right now.

Klatt has always been praiseful for Harbaugh/UM. He pegged UM as a playoff contender for 2015 before the MSU game.

This team can win it all.
The X-factor is quarterback play.
