Spath: Red unlikely to retire on his own
He corrected this tweet in a later reply. Promoted is supposed to be prompted.
Unless promoted by the Michigan AD, I'm hearing it's very likely Red Berenson will not to choose to retire on his own.

@UmPuckhead Nope.

I am afraid so.
On the positive side though, I hear Lois Lane was the real deal.
to do anything...His tenure as AD has been underwhelming to say the least
I give him a D+ so far.
And there better be a damn night game this year, or that starts to creep towards F territory quite quickly.
If Red comes back, I think you can say for sure that Warde is a liability. No night games, getting owned on Notre Dame negotiations, and Red coming back the first time were all bad but bringing back a 77 year old coach off of a losing season would make me wonder if he's braindead.
Hackett left his post so quickly, it would've been nice if he became the permanent AD.
Is no night games really pitchfork-worthy these days? That's silly.
Not really pitchfork worthy but literally every other school in the country has them. We have to go to places like Iowa, Happy Valley etc. constantly for night games and then we can't even the score with them at home because Bo wanted to play at 1 pm which we don't even do anymore.
Night games produce better atmospheres which lead to a greater chance of winning the game. We probably win Iowa if it's at noon. We're not talking about becoming LSU. Just do one a year. Is there another school in the FBS that refuses to play home night games? Even Notre Dame does.
Proof? Because that's pretty much just a feelingsball take.
Because people drink all day. The fans all wear the same color. A noon game just is tamer than a night game.
Another feelingsball take.
- You picked a sample size of 2.
- Speight got injured in that game.
- OSU's offense was not good for the latter half of the year. They struggled against Wisconsin, PSU, Northwestern, MSU, and Michigan and then got shut out against Clemson.
If you want to make an argument that the night game matters, you need to show that either the home team wins more often or that there are more upsets during night games compared to non-night games.
Not that I wouldn't love to see more night games, but your argument is utterly ridiculous.
but I did read before that winning percentage for the home team is higher in games played at night. Not saying it's all directly the crowd, but a noon game is early man. You give people, especially lazier college students an extra 7 hours to get liquored up and hyped, it's going to create a louder atmosphere. It's more of an event.
there's a different level of pressure in a night game and it can be harder to pull out of a bad situation.
Also, if it's broad daylight in E Lansing, Blake never drops that fucking punt.
the trauma is real.
I watched the end of that game in a bar full of Sparties that I'd wandered into thanks to a fucking dated blog entry that claimed it was a UM bar.
Easily top 5 worst moments of my life as a sports fan.
So apparently, all I can remember - it only comes through as images and colors - is that it was dark.
I'm positive that doesn't happen if it wasn't dark.
Still, that is some testament to the power of lasting pain that I'd blocked out the location.
Could be the last high moment for Sparty, so fuck them - fuck those guys to hell.
The fans drive the team. Yeah the field is 120 yards long everywhere but is harder to win when the fans are screaming against you. Look at every teams' historical road record vs. home record and they do much better at home. The fans are much more into it at night due to all day drinking and the build up to the game.
Supposedly it's just as much Harbaugh's call, but, OK.
Harbaugh doesn't care. He's done them everywhere he's been. Warde literally said "I don't like night games."
the atmosphere for the UTL games were electric. They have should have ONE every year. Let's stop acting like its the 1970's.
I haven't enjoyed your recent tirade about how a handful of people will downvote bad news posts, but if Red is back for next season, then I guess I'll call you brother on this one and see you in church.
You don't like the truth?!
I don't like whining over what amounts to nothing.
to confirm your totally unfounded negative opinion of Warde. On the contrary your rush to judgement regarding the BIG game after the plane crash turned out to be totally BS.
I am sure your response is that he is gutless because he we did not have a night game.
A night football game. Our AD needs to be fired because we kicked off at 3:30 instead of 8:00? Yeesh.
ND deal is absolutely fine. Football wanted them on the schedule ASAP and they shoe-horned them in there the best they could given the already established schedule.
I honestly don't even know what else we're supposed to be mad about.
The Warde Manuel outrage has to be the funniest on-going bit on this blog.
1. No evidence that he's trying to change the football schedule problem anytime soon.
2. Did not support Harbaugh after the OSU game and in fact, supported the B1G instead.
3. Did not lobby for M to go to Rose Bowl instead of PSU (See Florida 2006 for an example of how this works)
4. Postponed hockey replacement search (allegedly) cause he was too busy moving into new house to tackle that last year
5. Does not appear to be willing (so far) to force Red's hand and demand retirement. But - I have said, if he does my opinion of him will change dramatically. Please note this.
The refusal to add a night game is also an issue for me but not the #1 issue by any means.
1) Well, there's no evidence he's not. Regardless, if he were to have switched MSU and Penn State last year, then we have the same problem with what is NOW the two best teams in the division. If MSU falls on its face, what you want is not a good idea. If MSU doesn't return to and maintain an elite level of play, then nobody gives a shit about this issue. What you want is short-sighted.
2) I don't even know what this means. We lost to OSU. If you're referring to whining about the officiating, then there's nothing to discuss here.
3) PSU won the division and won the B1G Championship. Should the Big Ten winner NOT go to the Rose Bowl? Seriously? Are you mad that Warde didn't lobby for us to be crowned National Champs?
4) I find it hilarious that people actually expect a guy to waltz into a new job and immediately blow out a living legend head coach who just came off a Conference Tourney title, top 10 ranking and an Elite 8. Fucking hilarious. Yeah, WTF Warde?!
5) Like you said, that situation isn't even finished. Why make #5? Your list is 4 points long.
Night games. (sigh) You hate the AD because he didn't schedule an 8:00 kick in one single season of football. I don't know what to tell you, man. Get pissed, I guess.
I have zero problem with any of the extremely minor things you find outrageously egregious. Let's check the budget, the facilities, the staff, etc. Wanna dig into any of that stuff? The things that actually matter?
Our two biggest conference home games are OSU and MSU no matter how good they are because they are rivals.
I know what you're saying. I'll buy it. I'm not going to die on that hill.
I just don't care. As a season ticket holder, within a two year span, you will see all of your favorite division rivals once. (shrug)
I can't imagine a world where this issue would lead someone to hate the AD.
Behind the scense he was very critical of choice of officials and the job they did. It is not the job of the AD to go public with such matters.
Would you be willing to explicity state how you would have wanted him to handle these issues? And then could you offer any sort of precedent for the situation to have been handled that way?
It is always much easier to complain than to offer alternative ways for situations you don't agree with to have been handled.
I would've liked him to handle the situation with the officiating as Don Canham did when Michigan got screwed out of the Rose Bowl in 1973 and Bo lost his mind. Canham did not support the B1G position on the matter and 100% had Bo's back - even as the media and the rest of the B1G wanted Bo to stop talking about it. Canham didnt give two shits about what the rest of the conference thought about him - he was always Michigan and Bo first - everything else be damned.
And in regards to the PSU situation I would want him out in front of the media - loud and proud - stating the case that Michigan not PSU, deserved to go the Rose Bowl based on our 49-10 destruction of them. That the only reason we didnt play in the championship game was due to officiating malpractice - not the team getting beat - and if the B1G wants to do what's right they'd send us, not PSU out west. Basically exactly what Florida did to us back in 2006 when we got hipchecked out of the NCG we should've been in.
I've given you enough crap, but I wanted to state: I don't think 2006 Florida is a worthy point of reference. I don't think ANYBODY other than those in Ann Arbor wanted or needed to see Michigan and Ohio State play again. Florida didn't have to push very hard.
Basing the Rose Bowl on one game is -- well, that's not how it works, and you know that. The Rose did and should take the Big Ten Champion. That Michigan beat PSU in week 4 is as irrelevant as PSU beating OSU.
Should PSU have made the playoff instead of Ohio State? They won head to head. (PSU fans think yes, for what it's worth)
Should Iowa have made the Orange over Michigan? They won head to head.
You can't play that game. PSU was the Big Ten champion. They go to the Rose. If the situation were reversed, I believe you would laugh at the suggestion that anyone other than Big Ten Champion Michigan deserves the Rose Bowl, regardless of which team handed us our lone conference loss.
I think JT was short by a fraction of an inch upon infinite Zapruder-like reviews of sideline still images. At regular game speed, with a split second to determine forward progress, I thought the official's spot was incredibly accurate, probably much closer than I would have gotten it.
I place no blame on officiating for the OSU loss, which seems to be the crux of both of your issues above.
I understand your desire for a more vocal Manuel. I can only say that different people have different personalities. Some say the "squeaky wheel gets the grease" where others counter that you "attract more bees with honey than vinegar". Everybody has their own style. Warde Manuel is not Don Canham, nor does he operate in an Big Ten landscape that caters to the "Big Two". Expecting to act like anybody else is unfair. And for all of Schembechler and Canham's ranting and raving in 1973, they changed absolutely nothing and still sat home for bowl season.
"And for all of Schembechler and Canham's ranting and raving in 1973, they changed absolutely nothing and still sat home for bowl season. "
inasmuch as it is the reason the Big X decided to send more than one team to bowl games
I wanted Red to have one last year next season and go out " on a positive note" if that is what he wanted. Maybe the team could even rally and win a few for the Gipper in his farewell season? but this...needs the nuclear option...50% of this board plus Brian can terminate him now.
