Basketball start times
I noticed today that the home game against Indiana on Thursday starts at 9PM. I know this is not the first time that this happened this year either. Does this bother anyone else as much as it bothers me? Don't they know people have to get up early? I know some people won't like that I made this a topic but I just need a few people to validate my feelings and maybe give an answer to as why this is.

but God speed OP, God speed.

Is it that awful of a question? It's something that's bothered me, mostly this season as I get tired in my old age.
Here's post 900 that I basically have on repeat: Everyone needs to lighten up. It's a message board.

and the late games make that out of the question. I can't imagine it's great for the players, either; I know my French class in the RC started at 8 in the morning. . .

we were good, I would have no problem forfeiting a good night of sleep to watch it. As it is, I will probably watch the first half (kind of), shrug, and then go to bed without giving it another thought.

Plus the fact that I feel like we would have a better crowd if it was at 7pm versus 9pm.

Good exposure for west coast recruiting?
Just looking for a bright side.

Which is probably the driver for the late tip-off. Need to get all the games/programming in and Michigan had the misfortune of getting a late game slot.

had another username.
Maybe you could take a nap during the day...or move your 4:30 dinner time to 6:30 or 7 then it won't seem so late.
Should we stay off your lawn too?
Personally, I love 9pm games.
Go Blue! Beat IU!!!

Just think of all that west coast talent that will be eyeballing us in that timeslot.
Feel better?
January 24th, 2017 at 4:44 PM ^
West coast talent like me! I love 6pm start times. Or did you mean basketball talent?
January 24th, 2017 at 3:11 PM ^
I'm sure it's not a huge deal, but I do think about the players being student athletes and regularly having 9pm start times on weeknights. It'd be one thing if it was an away game in a different time zone, but when it's a home game it's purely done for TV, which has its pros and cons.
Personally I don't mind the late start, although I'd be more likely to go watch a 7pm game after work with some friends, where as 9pm I'm usually just gonna watch at home then head to bed.
January 24th, 2017 at 3:11 PM ^
we have way too many of these. Obviously, the ticket buying fans are secondary to the policy makers. Let folks in later time zones have the later games at their places. I dont hink many folks would mind an occasional early game, like at 6, so another could start at 8, but everyone I know hates the 9 o'clock starts, especially on weeknights.
January 24th, 2017 at 3:14 PM ^
These 9ish pm starts have been going on for years. I assume (with absolutely no basis) that it's a network decision. It's happened with ESPN too, I'm sure they have some logic behind the decision to do 7/9 ET doubleheaders rather than 6/8 or 5/7.
January 24th, 2017 at 3:16 PM ^
9pm is garbage. Game ends way too late. I have some days I have 8am classes and then work after until 5.
No time after the games to unwind, plus I gotta do updates after the games.
Let me say it this way, I can appreciate a 9pm game vs msu at Crisler ala 2011-12 because the games were fun.
As for when we have a 9pm game turnout like last year's IU home game turd did......my anger grows towards the networks.
TL;DR- 9pm games for big games only when both teams are deserving of it.

8am classes some days? Oh, to be young again, when I didn't have to get up at 4am.

Classes at 8, and then work until after 5? Oh, the humanity! You are in for a serious awakening when you hit the real world, dude. I routinely crash after midnight, start around 6-6:30ish, and work until 8pm. But then I don't "gotta do updates", so that probably evens things out, right? Your complete lack of persepective is really astounding.

Well being on the West Coast I actually like it. Means I get to watch it live since it starts right around the time I get home from work. Watching it live means I don't have to turn off social media until after I'm done watching and I always enjoy checking what people have to say about the game on twitter during the comercials.

Perhaps this should have been in a Festivus thread, but I agree. What really pisses me off is when they air a game that is being played in the Central time zone at 7 and then air a game at Crisler at 9. I think BTN has done this at least once this year. I am old and have to get up early. And I am on a diet and really, really want a cookie.

The 9:00 tips on weeknights are definitely silly, but thankfully I am in the position that I can handle staying awake until 11:00 or 11:15. College basketball games are fairly short. I don't live far from my office, so I can still get good sleep after the 9:00 tips. They certainly should not happen in the first place, of course. They have a difficult enough time getting people in the seats for 7:00 tips. Having 9:00 tips with a bad team is just asking the fans to not come to the games. The entire upper sections are empty with 9:00 tips. I'd also bet that the lower section is half full.

I like your style - just the tip(s), leave 'em wanting more
January 24th, 2017 at 3:50 PM ^
Michigan got unlucky on all the 9:00 tips on weeknights but got lucky to get alot of weekend games at home.
It kind of evens out.

Get Off My Yard -- I'm too tired to comment on a 9pm start after getting up early to bake!
Actually, I agree, for us golden-oldies on this Board, 9pm is a bit late for a start.

Do you believe that teams play worse if they start at 9:00?

Yeah, 9:00 sucks but they don't care about the people who buy tickets to go to the game. TV rules college sports. Otherwise toe would meet leather at 1:00 and basketball would be on Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons.
January 24th, 2017 at 4:55 PM ^
remember those day's.
January 24th, 2017 at 4:45 PM ^
I live in the central time zone so I like the 8 p.m. better. I usually go to bed by 10-11 so it's not a big deal to me.
January 24th, 2017 at 4:53 PM ^
on a weekday is bad for me who has to start early. Nine o'clock game's should be banned on any night. Like Team 101 wrote. Thursday's and Saturday's.

This is easily fixable. Start the conference season in December and everyone plays on weekends and byes only occur during the week. Play 5 games max during week, all 7 pm starts. Three on BTN (Tues, Wed, Thur) and 2 on ESPN (Tues and Thur). Problem solved.
January 24th, 2017 at 5:46 PM ^
That's just the way it is. As a 50+ year old man, I wish the games started earlier. As a Michigan sports fan, I'm happy as hell to get to watch our fellas whenever they're on. My daughter at UM says she actually prefers the 9p games, fwiw

...starting with the first year of the Fab Fave IIRC. The reason was because the 9PM start time was too late. ESPN switched them to 7PM Tuesday, which I believe is still intact.
Not sure if anyone remembers Michigan playing Purdue in 1991. We were headed to the NIT and Purdue was headed to the NCAA's. We lost in double-OT with CWebb in the stands. That game ended close to midnight. Not too long after that, it seems like the move to Tuesday was announced.
