OT: Cowherd Just Said B. Kelly Exploring NFL Options
OK, OK, I know this is pretty OT with everything happening, and who knows if Cowherd's sources are legitimate. But Colin's takeaway is that it is really hard to compete at ND with their academic standards and tough to get recruits to South Bend, and that combined with his dismal showing this year has Kelly looking to break from ND (rather than the other way around). If this happens, I predict ND goes into another tailspin of prolonged mediocrity. While we all hate Kelly, the guy has been well above average and done better than anyone there since Holtz, this year notwithstanding.
Discussion? Thoughts? Thoughts and Prayers??
EDIT: I am still watching Cowherd, and he just said he thinks Bama, OSU, UM and USC are the 4 best teams and should be in the play-off, but that Washington will edge us out unless they lose. Thinks we were the better team Saturday, and that the officiating was very bad. Not important in and of itself, but this growing narrative cannot be bad for our chances...

Beef with you, and I know you're a well-known snarkist. I'll take this in stride in light of the events this past Saturday and reiterate: To Hell with Notre Dame and Brian Kelly.

Snarkist. I really like that! Can I be known as a snarkist from now on? It sounds way, way more dignified than "asshole"... :-)

I like "snarkologist" better, but you know that is just like my opinion.

I must admit I'm curious what exactly you would have done had you not taken this in stride?

"Hey Dad, there is some guy on our porch. He is decked out in Michigan gear, and he looks angry. Plus, he smells of hot pockets and boiled cabbage and bad life choices. Should I get fire hose out???"

key plays where we got hose,d each as important as the next (we were stopped on our long first drive by a non PI call). Yeah, of course we would have won without any of our key errors, but they occured in the course of the game. A tidy shitpile of calls from the officials, OTOH, would have won us the game, and deservedly so.
But going even beyond THAT: how the H don't you come away from such a game saying these are two completel matched teams? How can it justify our drop?

I can only imagine how an NFL player would react if BK went all in with a "You fucking asshole!" tirade. My only hope is that the cameras are pointed at it when it happens and I've got a nice bowl of popcorn at the ready.

Stanford is somehow able to make it work.

I recently took my daughter on a ND visit / tour and that place is fucking weird. Sure, beautiful campus, buildings, etc, but none of the kids seemed like they wanted to be there. It's like 80% of the student body was only there because their parents made them go. Notre Dame was sad, depressing, and weird.
Contrast that to our NU visit the next day. The kids there were brilliant, happy, engaged, and displayed an enthusiasm for their school much like most of us have for Michigan.

from looking at kids on a campus visit? impressive.

He said it but in a way which was clearly a troll. Some M fans took it as Gospel and came out looking like idiots.

Academic standard and getting recruits to come to South Bend... just another excuse to deflect scrutiny of Kelly.
He'll take credit for when recruits come to ND simply because of cachet or legacy reasons I'll bet.

I've got a few minutes. I might as well explore my NFL options, too.

I was curious to see if BK was given more chances compared to the other two. Weiss had a .565 winning percentage at ND and Willingham had a .586 winning percentage.
Brian Kelly is currently sitting at .656. couple good seasons helped him to last 7 years at ND.
November 28th, 2016 at 1:23 PM ^
Kelly: 66% wins in 7 seasons
Weis: 57% in 5 seasons
Willingham: 58% in 3 seasons
Davie: 58% in 5 seasons
Lou Holtz: 77% in 11 seasons.
So yes, Kelly is better than anyone since Holtz by a significant margin. And he's coming off a 10-win season. Firing him would be a huge error...
November 28th, 2016 at 3:01 PM ^
Those numbers all change if they have to vacate wins.
November 28th, 2016 at 1:07 PM ^
He's only been slightly above average. He's had 2 double digit win seasons at ND in 7 years, compared to 3 in 4 years at Cincinnati. His ND record is 59W-31L. That said, the NFL deserves him.

I wonder how much of him looking around is related to the academic trouble they had+having to vacate wins. Wonder if there is other stuff that he's afraid he'll get punished for is and is leaving preemptively a la Pete Caroll

Brian Kelly to the 49ers and Chip to the golden domers.

And Brian Kelly denied it. I'd be surprised if he quit. Then again, I guess that's the usual coach's response to NCAA sanctions.
I wonder if ND would go after Les (and if they could have landed Herman if Kelly started "exploring" several losses ago).
