hand in the face it would have never gone in, you just cant let him shoot a open shot no matter where it is on the court. Great effort today by Manny, Deshawn started strong but really fell off. We cant even go to the NIT now
The title should be defending the ball with 2.2 seconds remaining.
I know people will complain about not guarding the inbound, etc. But honestly, Stu had a hand right in his face. Turner just hit an incredible shot.
stu's not tall enough to put a hand in turner's face.... turner is 6'7.
That's the problem. Stu's hand isn't going to do anything to Turner's shot. There was an article after the last OSU game talking about how Stu basically admitted he had no chance guarding Turner. Also, why did he not have someone guarding him or the ball on the inbounds, and double-team the guy with the ball. They wouldn't have enough time to pass away from it and get a good shot with only 2 seconds left. He went into a zone, basically giving anyone who had the ball an open 3. Horrible, horrible coaching.
I have to agree. Inexcusable. You have to extend the defense and make them work to bring the ball up the floor. I am in disbelief, given Beilein's basketball mind. So disappointing after a great effort.

Also, why did he not have someone guarding him or the ball on the inbounds,
You saw Stu get screened by Buford, right?
It's not the hand in the face (which Douglass definitely did not have - he's too short). Plus, even if Eric Riley or Ben Cronin was out there, you don't want to foul. It's about guarding the in-bounds pass to make sure the team's best player doesn't easily get the ball. Hmmm...where has this happened before?

A bunch of these come with guys on the inbounder. Watch the Duke/VT one. I dont really blame Beilien for not having someone on the inbounder, Turner made one hell of a contested shot over Douglas. Id like to have seen Manny doubling Turner with someone else, but the not having someone on the inbounder isn't the "If we do this, we are guaranteed to win" move that people are making it out to be.
That happened 18 years ago. How many times have teams failed to convert in the same circumstances since then? This is like complaining about our defense against the Colorado Hail Mary. Sometimes crap just happens.
Really I do.
you always have to turn a player when they are sprinting down the floor. Cut them off, they have to cross over and slow down, and don't get a clear shot. FML
nothing we can do now except drink and do nice things for little old ladies...anything to get some positive karma flowing our way.
God I hope spring ball shows some improvement and gives us some hope..
SOUR GRAPES, but the clock started late.
It's hindsight, but if douglass comes to the ball, it takes turner another .2 seconds to get the shot off and he doesn't. I think you bring pressure up to the half court line in hopes that it takes longer to shoot. still, he made a great shot. i'm so upset. why does everything bad always happen to me?
There's no way that shot clock started on time when the ball was inbounded. How did he dribble that far and get off a shot in 1.7 seconds? I'm not near a TV anymore. Can someone with DVR confirm this?
I can. I went frame by frame. He caught the ball and put it down once before the clock ever started.
but the timekeeper does.
Buckeye Bob running the clock in this game.
It looks like the clock should've started .2s before it did. However, Turner did release the ball .2s before the clock hit 0, so it's basically a wash.
There's always a small delay. Even so, it was .2 seconds at the most, which would have meant a shot just as the buzzer went off. Furthermore, the timekeeper is often slower on inbounds plays, so I'm not going to complain.
I don't think it at all matters in this case, but for what it's worth, the officials start the game clock.
He hit an incredible uncontested shot
look on the bright side. it's not like we'll ever see the replay of that shot for the next 50 years...
This is why you guard the passer EVERY SINGLE TIME. There's no excuse. Giving Turner an uncontested pass and a chance to sprint down the court to take a shot was just asking for him to stab us right in the heart.
I don't understand it. At all.
if you guard the inbounder or double their top option (TURNER)and deny him the ball, but to do nothing and have no one meet the ball until it was past half court is STUPID STUPID STUPID.
I could handle this much better if we had Gibson on the passer or applied full court pressure. Last I knew behind the arc won the game but we started with 5 inside the arc.
I want the highlight to be an incredble shot from 40 ft with two defenders draped over him not stu unathletic douglas lunging at him and still ending up 6 ft away.
If you watch the replay close enough, you can clearly see that the clock didn't start as soon as Turner touched the ball, 2 to 3 tenths of a second clearly passed before the clock was started. Turner got the shot off with about .2 left. It was an amazing shot, but to make a long story short we were robbed......again(MSU)
I would defend the inbounder, and have some one pick the ball up just before half court, by not defending the inbounder or receiver thy got almost half way up the court with no time off the clock. I go to Pitt and last years Nova game in the elite 8 taught me you don't front the receiver of the inbound pass, and this game taught me you do play at least some defense. If we do play full court D there tOSU is stuck with at least a longer shot.
Its easy to 2nd guess, especially when you have a stupid ass 1/3 court zone D out there with 2.2 left.
1) Why Stu? Turner can easily shoot over his hand, why not put manny or even gibson up there to make a tougher shot.
2) LLP is under the basket. In what world is that useful? Might as well leave him on the bench for the play.
3) Why give him a running start with the ball? One guy in the back court could have made turner get the ball without momentum going to the front court. That makes for a longer shot.
Like I said, easy to 2nd guess, but its especially easy when even Lav is calling out the defensive setup before the play starts.
He might as well have been left on the bench the entire game. The game would have been a blowout despite Sims/Harris if it hadn't been for Stu's big day shooting.
As you noted, this isn't second-guessing. It was obvious from before the ref gave the ball to the in-bounder. As soon as I saw the defensive setup, like Lavin and I'm sure thousands of other folks, I said, "Why aren't they on the ball?" and "Why have one of your shortest players hanging out underneath the basket?" Just not smart basketball at all. A coach has GOT to give his team the best chance to win and, to spout a cliche, it's about playing (or coaching) all 40 minutes, not 39 minutes and 58 seconds.
I didn't see the game (at work), but it sounds like somebody should have hounded Turner up the court and made it harder for him to shoot. That said, 36-footer as time expires is a very tough shot, and I'll trust that Beilein has a plan for not pressuring. Not saying that plan was the best one, but it is a coaching decision.
Put it like this: Would you want Lebron James taking an open 37-footer if you were an NBA team?
I know Turner is not James, but he has the strength, shooting ability and clutch ability to make that shot if he's open.
How can you let the best player in college basketball have an uncontested run and shot at the basket with 2 seconds left? Get some bodies up the court and at least make him work for it.
And Stu Douglass jumping with a hand up 5 feet away from 6'7 Evan Turner does not constitute contesting a shot.
Time to Drink
Dear john beilein,
thanks for putting an exclamation mark on our athletic year.
what the hell? seriously, this was a joke, there was no pressure with two seconds left....inexcusable. i feel bad for manny harris, the seniors...but that loss is on coaching. coaching lost that game today. 4 people guarding the paint???? why did turner not have a SHADOW on him as he ran up the court. he made a great shot and that is fine. WHY DID ANYONE NOT GUARD/PRESSURE ALL THE WAY UP THE FLOOR?????
coaching was amazing for 99% of the game...until 2.2seconds left with the team up by 2pts and then it cost them the game. Belien deserves a lot of heat for that...and for me, my Detroit/Michigan Sports disaster continues...dammit
When Turner let the ball go we had 4 guys packed inside the 3 point arc and only Stu applying minimal pressure. Why were our guys not spread out a little more? Diebler was also wide open right next to Turner, you don't want either one being open for a shot. Considering we were coming out of a time out that was horribly done. That was also a moving screen set on Stu as he was guarding Turner on the inbounds. The other guard, Buford?, applied the old Tight End pick play shuffling in front of Stu and knocking into him. Of course they won't call it at that point but we should have had another guard up there anyway.
look, this is evan freaking turner....has anyone heard of him before? oh yeah, he is ohio state's BEST PLAYER, and a candidate for NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR. oh fuck me, why would we ever...oh I don't know...guard him??? thats alright, its not like osu was going to give him the ball, so lets not put a guy on the inbound or put a guy on turner...oh wait EVERYONE IN THE FUCKING WORLD KNEW EVAN TURNER WAS GETTING THE BALL. he got the ball in the back court with 2 seconds left, obviously we should pack 4 defenders in the paint because that is obviously where the ball is going....OH WAIT, NO ITS NOT, THERE WAS 2 GOD DAMN SECONDS LEFT WITH THE BALL IN THE HANDS OF A CANDIDATE FOR NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR...YEAH THAT BALL IS SURE GOING TO THE FUCKING POST.....what a debacle. that is a complete joke...screw it

I am of the belief that the chances of making a 36-foot last second shot reduce dramatically when a hand is in your face.
What was discussed in the time out? Any strategy would have been better than what was done. Stand and watch isn't a good stategery.
ah, this sums it up. Heres Beileins response
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptAoJedxFzU
Do all the refs even consider is if the ball goes through the hoop before time expires? I'm not complaining, just wondering. I could see how the refs might not even consider if the clock started late because the player taking the last shot should have the benefit of seeing how much time is left in deciding when to let the ball go.
the Big Ten should review the replay and reverse the outcome of the game. That's my purely objective and unbiased analysis.
It's basketball. It's before the shot leaves the players hands that matters. If I misread your post it's because i'm down to one eye and slowly working on digging that out too. OUCH!
Calling the play dead because of that would be unfair, as every team gets a small delay before the clock starts. It is incredibly rare to call a shot not good because the timekeeper delayed the start a little bit because a) it happens every play, so doing so would be incredibly selective enforcement and b) it is unfair to the shooter, who often uses the clock to gauge when to shoot at the end of the game (or at least would argue that he did).
ESPN announcers are laying blame on the coaches, either Beilein or the coach responsible for setting the D. Not enough pressure. Hard to argue the point.
D? What D? I didn't see anything closely resembling a defense. Didn't guard the inbound, didn't guard the guy who got the ball. It looked like they just sat in their 1-3-1 and said screw it, let us see if a future lottery pick/player of the year candidate can make it from 1/3 court. Microcosm for the season.
Dude makes a 37ft shot. It's 2009-2010. Just suck it up and move on.
