Michigan To Face Tulsa In NCAA Tournament Play-In Game Comment Count

YES WE KAM

An official Internet Hero by the name of Sarcastic Prick leaked the news partway through CBS's interminable selection show, but we waited until it was officially official: Michigan will face Tulsa on Wednesday in Dayton in an East region 11-seed play-in game; the winner will play six-seed Notre Dame in Brooklyn on Friday.

Wednesday's game will tip off at around 9:10 pm on TruTV. Friday's game, should Michigan make it, is set for a 9:40-ish start on CBS.

The full bracket [click to embiggen]:

Tulsa, a surprise inclusion in the field, is two spots below Michigan on KenPom at #58. The Golden Hurricane have two common opponents with the Wolverines: they split their season series against both UConn and SMU, two teams that defeated Michigan in non-conference play.

If Michigan advances into the field of 64, they'll take on an exaggerated version of themselves. Notre Dame boasts the tenth-most efficient offense in the country according to KenPom—and the #172 defense.

Much more coverage coming this week, obviously.

The at-large games always go second since people actually care about them.  And the 16 seeds play at 3:30 west coast time.  Any earlier and nobody sees that and people getting off work miss the late game.

JB is at his best when given time to prepare.  a late game gives him and his staff literally no time to prepare for a potential game against ND.  i imagine, however, that he will focus part of the practices this week for a potential ND game.

With air travel, the difference between ending the game at 11:30PM or 9PM are minimal.  Plus, I would think that CBS would want to put a potential UM-ND matchup in prime time, so we may still get close to 48 hours between games.

Agree with the sentiment, but the potential Friday game against ND will start at approximately 9:40, so we'll get a full 48 hours if we win.

As long as the Friday game, should we make it, is scheduled fairly late on Friday then it's all good. We're going to have to prove we belong. Let's bring it and shock the world.

Being on the west coast that's perfect for me. But I completely understand the frustration. 9pm is around my bedtime on a typical weekday since I get up at 5am. Looking forward to heading straight to the Thirsty Lion after work on Wednesday! Go blue!

I lived in Dayton for 7 years.  There are a lot of Ohio State fans, but any U of Daytom fans hate Ohio State.   Dayton-located Ohio State fans are not going to kill themselves to get Pay-In tickets at UD just so they can root against Michigan.  We'll be fine.

Honestly, I'm just glad it's a short drive for the team. I figure they got back from Indy Saturday night and should get a couple days rest before making the trip to Dayton. I'm worried about their legs should they make it past Tulsa, as they'll have to go straight to NYC from Ohio either late Wednesday or early Thursday morning.

Any fan support we can give them in Ohio would be great, and I'm also expecting a good turnout in Brooklyn should we make it.

Tulsa is very beatable; they are tough, but it's also a team that seems to be able to play exactly one way, and I'm not sure they can keep up offensively with UM if they get going.

I really like our bracket. Beatable teams, a potential fun match up with ND, and if we make a run, we avoid the 1 and 2 seed, unlike the 9/10 seeds. For thinking we were done a week ago, this is fine.

Southern/Holy Cross is in the undercard on Wednesday. I haven't seen Southern since visiting Atlanta in 1989. I suppose that's a good omen.

plays primarily 4 guards and a little useage 6'9" center.  their best two scorers only shoot 35% and 37% from 3 pt range.  the team is pretty bad overall at shooting and worse at rebounding.  we better blow these guys out.

I'd like this bracket a lot more without WVU waiting at #3.  They scuttled a bit at the end of the year, but that's a Final Four-level team.

Just saying, WVU would eat us alive in the paint. (see Hammonds on Saturday). With that big man (cant remember his name) from WVU played on Saturday (against a very good Kansas team) he'd have 90 on us. Plus, WVU presses the entire game. Who's going to handle the ball besides Walton? He's going to be exhausted after one half. Spike is going to come out with one hip and crutches to help us out. I think you guys are getting to excited about this team and this bracket. Let's keep in mind that if we win we have to play ND. ND beat Carolina and Duke (@ Duke by the way) this year and they've only lost to those two teams like one time in the last 4 years LOL ... if they could play a lick of defense they'd be a top 20 team. On a side note, I have no idea why Beilein cant recruit decent big men. It's like he's so used to recruiting these no names from his days at Richmond and WVU that he doesnt realize he's driving a Porsche that goes by the name of MICHIGAN.

they beat SMU, UConn, Cincinnati, Wichita State and Temple. All are NCAA tournament team(SMU doesn't count but they are if they're eligible). They're small across the board, but they're super athletic. They have a bunch of guards who can drive and kick. They play a pretty strong defense that relies on pressure and forcing turnovers. Bigger and physical teams has given them ton of problems. Tulsa is a senior heavy team(9 seniors!!!!!) and has post-season experience. Much tougher out than most people realize.

I still see Michigan winning this one because they don't have to deal with size and rebounding, but they still have to deal with their athleticism.

They have two players they should keep an close eye on at 3 pt line. James Woodard is a 1st team all conference and can shoot. Pat Birt is another who can shoot as well and has been hot in the last 10 games.

Michigan offense needs to take care of the ball and make 3 pt shots.

They're a streaky shooting team but when they're on, they're hard to beat. They knocked out good teams.

Their two best guys are Shaquille Harrison who can get to the rack at will and James Woodard who is a good shooter, he shot 40% last season and had more attention because of his range.

They're a small team but is probably the most athletic team that Michigan will face all year.

Yeah - I think one takeaway from the Big 10 tournament is that the defense was looking a little better vs NW & Indiana.  They couldn't handle the size of Purdue but the guards and forwards at least weren't letting them waltz into the paint like they were earlier in the season.

I actually think they played reasonably well vs Purdue - they showed glimpses of the type of team they could've been all season.  Maybe they're getting it together at the right time and can take out Tulsa and ND.  Go Blue!

They are athletic, but their defense is a lot like those VCU clubs under Smart that relied on ball pressure (Tulsa forces about 14 TOs a game).  This team, though, is one of the least TO-prone in the country (a bit under 10 a game, which is top-10 in the country), so that should mitigate some of that strength.  Also, they aren't a particularly good shooting team (50% eFG) or rebounding (35 per game) club, so this isn't the type of team that can destroy UM on the front line.

The athleticism will be tough to match, but this also feels like a game where Robinson can shoot over defenders, which will be a plus after playing IU and Purdue.  As always, if good Irvin shows up and Donnal can score enough inside, they can keep up.  But if Walton lets guys past him and MAAR is the only semi-competent guy going to the rim, it'll be a short tournament.

I'm hoping that everybody knows every game will be tough this year, incluidng Tulsa, but unlike with Purdue and Indiana, they won't get as beat up down low.  Also stats suggest that Tulsa doesn't defend the three point very well so if its press doesn't wear us out, we should get some open looks beyond the arc.  This gives us a good chance at winning the game, much better than some match ups.

from last week..first were def OUT..then the last second OT win over NW and the buzzer beater against the top seed Indiana..Then last night everyone has us OUT, then this morning new life and it looked like we MIGHT sneak in then waiting around all day and finally IN!  You really cant  underestimate the importance of this bid...for the program, recruiting, devlopment of this team, the prestige for our  university and many many other reasons....NOW lets see if we can make some noise and springs some upsets...I am hoping now that the monkey is off their backs they will relax a bit and come out ON FIRE

game on Wednesday is worth the upside of playing this portion of the bracket. We matchup fine with this draw. Hope the guys catch fire and buckle down for a few games. Anything can happen. Go Blue.

From the horse's mouth:  The Committee Comissioner siad that Michigan got in because "Four wins over Top-30 teams" and our big win against Indiana in the BTT.

Just like we've been saying here for three days . . . Top 100 is not the same as Top 25.  The committee must read MGoBlog.

Chatman's 3-pointer got us in.  One single play made the difference between in or out.  That's close.
